Default Yorkie Owners - Advice Please?

Hopefully I am going to be a first time Yorkie Owner soon and wanted
some advice, I have had other dogs before and I know every dog is
different but anyways:

What is your dogs name?

How long did it take to Toilet train your dog?

How long did it take to Train your dog the basics?
(Sit, Down, Stay, Come etc)

Does your dog know any tricks?
(What are they and how did you teach them)

How long did it take to get your dog used to being brushed?

How long did it take to train your dog to walk on the lead?

How long did it take to stop your dog from biting?

Where does your dog sleep, bed or cage?

Do you groom the dog yourself or take it to a Groomers?

How long does the hair take to grow, long time or short time?

How often do you feed your dog per day?

What food do you feed your dog?

What is your dogs favourite treats?

What is your dogs favourite toys?

Does your dog need a coat to wear when outdoors walking?
(Proper dog coat, not just for fashion)

How often and how long do you walk your dog?

Any other advice?

Thank You

What is your dogs name? Gizmo

How long did it take to Toilet train your dog? Pee pad training for pee, he is at 98% now and had it about 85% at 7 months. Poop? Still working on that. We're about 20% right now at 9 months.

How long did it take to Train your dog the basics?
(Sit, Down, Stay, Come etc) Sit...and stay(most of the time) pretty quickly, come....uh, still working on that one.

Does your dog know any tricks?
(What are they and how did you teach them) Dancing, kissing, etc... he just does them.

How long did it take to get your dog used to being brushed? As long as it took me to find the right brush. You will find that your pup will tolerate some much better than others.

How long did it take to train your dog to walk on the lead? Maybe we should have taken a puppy class, it would have helped. He does pretty well without proper training though. Please get a harness instead of a collar.

How long did it take to stop your dog from biting? Simply didn't allow it. We instantly stop playing and ignore.

Where does your dog sleep, bed or cage? Spent the first few months in a playpen by our bed and now he sleeps with us in the bed.

Do you groom the dog yourself or take it to a Groomers? both

How long does the hair take to grow, long time or short time? Depends on the pup

How often do you feed your dog per day? We free feed, but I'm about to change him to three times a day.

What food do you feed your dog? Life's Abundance and supplement with home cooking

What is your dogs favourite treats? yogurt drops and yorkie yummies

What is your dogs favourite toys? small plush animals, balls and things that squeak

Does your dog need a coat to wear when outdoors walking?
(Proper dog coat, not just for fashion) It depends upon the weather, but yes if it's cold. He has a very healthy coat, but he will get the shivers if he's cold.

How often and how long do you walk your dog? It depends on if the lab down the street is off leash. I try to walk him three days a week for about 20 minutes.

Any other advice? There are a lot of great books out there. Also, stay around this site. I have learned so much from other wonderful YTers.

Welcome to YorkieTalk!

Not sure how much you know about puppies. google parvo virus, it is important that you do not let your new puppy on strange ground anywhere.
Once all shots are done then you are safe. Be very protective that your puppy does not get sick. It is deadly!!!

I have a little girl, she is 7 months old, we went away when we first got her, so for the first time in 18 years, i pp pad trained her. well she is still doing that, seems to like it better then going outside, but she does that to, just not enough yet. But I do not panic as yorkies are the hardest dogs to train in that respect. But you do need patience patience. They will get it, and consistency goes a long way.

If a yorkie is put in a position to not trust, due to a punishment, they do NOT forget. Will always act like your going to hit. For example, my oldest was attacked viciously by a 6 month old yorkie I had just gotten, he was one at the time. 4 years later we are just able to say, he is not so intimidated by other dogs. He felt any other dog was out to attack him. It has been a long haul with him. He is my precious 4 pound male, if he is not on my knew he is up my butt (so my hubby says). but that all started after he was attacked and he needs security and he gets that with being stuck to me.
Hope something I have said here helps you out. Not only on the training but other stuff to.. pooh's mum

Here is a really good article on Parvo:

http://www.peteducation.com/article....&articleid=467

You will notice it says that the main cause of parvo is vaccinations interfering with the mother's immunities. Any immunity a puppy may still have from nursing is often killed off by the first vaccinations leaving a puppy completely unprotected. People mistakenly think since a puppy has had one or even two rounds of shots, he will be safe.

Puppies should not be allowed in areas where other dogs have been until two weeks after they get their final round of shots. That's usually about 4&1/2 months. Until then, keep them out of grooming salons, pet stores, dog parks, etc. Make sure you have him in your arms or a carrier when you visit the vet. Don't walk him in areas other dogs are walked like common areas in apartment complexes or neighborhoods. Train him to use pads instead, then transition him to outside if that's what you prefer.

Parvo is so deadly. We had a puppy on another forum get parvo from his own backyard. It wasn't fenced in and loose dogs used it for a bathroom.

What is your dogs name? Smokey (8 months) and Chip (11 months)

How long did it take to Toilet train your dog? We've had Smokey about a month and a half and he's not anywhere near potty trained as he was a rescue. Chip is potty trained and it took a good 7-8 months. With consistency and lots of praise and rewards it will happen.

How long did it take to Train your dog the basics?
(Sit, Down, Stay, Come etc) Smokey knows sit, but once again, we haven't had him that long and we weren't the ones to teach that to him. Chip knows all of the basics and learned really quick. He knew them by the time he was 4 months old.

Does your dog know any tricks?
(What are they and how did you teach them) Smokey knows "dance". I taught him that by holding a treat above his nose and kinda wiggling it. He eventually started getting on his hind legs and "dancing" for the treat. Chip knows "up" where he jumps up, "shake" and "dance". My husband taught him "up" so I'm not sure what he did. I taught Chip "shake" by picking up his paw and saying "good shake" as I rewarded him. I did this about 20ish times in a row. I gave up because he was looking at me like I was nuts then one day a couple weeks later I had my hand on a bag of treats and he offered me his paw. He learned "dance" by watching me teach Smokey.

How long did it take to get your dog used to being brushed? Smokey isn't too fond of being brushed, but he doesn't freak out or anything. Chip usually just lays in my lap.

How long did it take to train your dog to walk on the lead? We're still working on that with both of them :-)

How long did it take to stop your dog from biting? Smokey is still biting, but that's because he's never been taught not to. Chip does on the occasion, but I taught him the word "easy" and he'll back off.

Where does your dog sleep, bed or cage? They sleep with me. We originally crate trained Chip, but I trust him. Smokey has anxiety being locked up and he would mess in his crate. I can't have him in a crate.

Do you groom the dog yourself or take it to a Groomers? The lady we got Smokey from is a professional groomer. She does Smokey free of charge and Chip for $35.

How long does the hair take to grow, long time or short time? It takes them about 6 weeks before they get scruffy again and need another hair cut.

How often do you feed your dog per day? I feed them two times a day.

What food do you feed your dog? Nature's Recipe, Easy to Digest formula

What is your dogs favourite treats? They like EVERYTHING!

What is your dogs favourite toys? Anything that makes noise and they can tug

Does your dog need a coat to wear when outdoors walking?
(Proper dog coat, not just for fashion) Smokey is alright with or without a coat. He doesn't care, but if it's really cold he likes being held. Chip needs one because he gets cold really easy.

How often and how long do you walk your dog? Since it's cold outside I don't typically walk them. When it's warm I walk them about every other day for about 30 an hour.

Any other advice? Bitter Apple works wonders to help puppies to stop chewing on things that they aren't supposed to and is completely safe. Also, if any of your cabinets are easy to open, I'd get child safety locks on them.

I just got my yorkie around halloween, when he was 11 weeks old, this questionaire is a good idea so here is what I have learned with my few months of having my yorkie
What is your dogs name? Bailey

How long did it take to Toilet train your dog? He is 19 weeks now and he is doing pretty good going on the pee pee pad, he still has accidents, but he knows when he as messed the wrong place. As a puppy I truly feel like sometimes he forgets. But when he is pooping and I am standing there he will start to squat somewhere he's not supposed to, then look at me shake my head no, and then poop on the pee pad. get a bottle of natures way.
How long did it take to Train your dog the basics?
(Sit, Down, Stay, Come etc) I am very dilligent so as a puppy he knows sit, down, no, and lay down. I take anything he is doing and reward him for it and then teach him a word to associate with his action. I also use a command to give him food, treats, water, anything - he has to work for his food. Stay is hard for Bailey as he is an inquisitive puppy. He will stay for a little while, but if I used the command in an emergency, I am not confident b/c Bailey would want to come investigate.
Does your dog know any tricks? we are working on crawl, speak, and roll over. Repitition and praise - he crawls on his own so now I am teaching a word and hand signal i use for a command and I use hand signal for all the tricks too. when he barks i say good speak and praise him. When he lays down i roll him over on my own (he hates that) and then tell him what a good boy he is.
How long did it take to get your dog used to being brushed? I found a really good tip here on YT - if you hold them and brush them in the air they wont fight as much b/c they dont want to fall. I started doing that and then I make my way to the couch and brush him - he is finally letting me lift his head and brush his stomach - after he quit trying to bite the brush he is really cooperative now, with good days and bad days.
How long did it take to train your dog to walk on the lead? We didnt get to start any of that training b/c we have an apt and had to wait until he was done with shots. My boyfriend can keep him behind him really well and they practice stopping and sitting and then go, they do well with that. He likes to walk even with me and walk ahead and everytime I pull him back behind me on his harness and start walking again. He is going to get it one day.

How long did it take to stop your dog from biting? I let him bite on me until it hurts, then yelp and say out and walk away. He now will put his teeth on me and then lick it like he sorry. He gets rowdy every now and then but i think he is still learning to control his bite - he hates it when we stop playing so he is learning. My dog has a very strong will so we work on him everyday - with things I learn from this board.

Where does your dog sleep, bed or cage? He plays a lot and gets stinky so he sleep in his dog bed in his cage beside our bed - he alerts us when he needs to pee or at 630 am when its time to eat. He sleeps in the bed after his bath when he is fresh and clean.

Do you groom the dog yourself or take it to a Groomers? He gets his face, feet, and sanitary cut a petsmart - I getting the nerve up to get his first hair cut/trim.

How long does the hair take to grow, long time or short time? Still has puppy hair, but it can often look very disheveled. I say his cottony hair grows about a 1/2 inch a month or so..

How often do you feed your dog per day? 2x per day - 630 am and 6pm with a snack for lunch.

What food do you feed your dog? He has been eating canidae since he left the breeders, and he is very particular about the food he eats - all natural foods, chicken strips, I have to get them from a specialty dog store. He had kong filler the other night and he had an upset stomach, so no commercial foods for him.

What is your dogs favourite treats? Chicken strips, apples, carrots, cottage cheese biscuits.

What is your dogs favourite toys? strewn all over the house - squeaky shoe, rope, and key chain.

Does your dog need a coat to wear when outdoors walking?
(Proper dog coat, not just for fashion). If its cold to me then I will get him a jacket - i have seen him shiver when its cold.

How often and how long do you walk your dog? Even as a puppy I can tell when he is tired of being cooped up in the house - we try every day but it ends up being 3-4x a week for 30 minutes - tire him out.

Any other advice? Get a yorkie book and this website on hand, people here give great advice.

I hated my Bailey at first b/c all he did was poop and cry but I love him so much now and he is part of the family - it takes time but it is so worth the little progress I can tell we are making and are going to make.
