| My new Yorkie Puppy My yorkie Cody is 6 months old he is a smaller baby he weighs 2 pounds 8ozs now and it seems that he gets extremly lonely when my husband and I are away, he stays right beside the door and is there when we get back. I dont even know if he moves at all.... It makes me so sad. So my question is basically is it safe to get another puppy, not a yorkie, my husband wants a larger dog maybe? Does anyone have a small yorkie and a large dog? How do they act together, or will Cody get hurt by him etc.... Please help! Thanks... |

| With such a small Yorkie, I would not want to risk it. |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | imo, its ok to get another dog (large or small) but i would not let them alone together when nobody else is home. its not safe. the larger pup could only be playing but could easily hurt such a small yorkie pup.

| I agree with the others. I'd be a little fearful leaving my tiny Yorkie with a larger dog. Ive been feeling the same with Meka, and we are thinking of getting a kitten....maybe thats a route you might want to consider. I wanted to ask, does your baby have free run of your house when your away? Because from what Ive read and experienced, he shouldnt just yet. Also, maybe getting him more interactive toys, and try leaving the TV on when your away. I think it helps them not feel so loney - JMO

| Cody sounds so sweet. Perhaps he would feel more secure in a small crate when you leave him alone. He does well when we leave him with some of his favorite toys in the crate. Otherwise, Remi travels everywhere with us. He rides to the store and comes in with me sometimes in his carryall bag. When ever we go visiting family and friends, Remi always comes along. He is so used to this routine he is quiet and happy to be along. We hope that this behavior will continue and we are confident that at 16 months old it will. My Remi is fortunate because both my husband and I are retired, although we do work part-time sometimes. There is usually one of us home for the day. In fact, our schedule always involves Remi. Weekends away, birthday parties, and even weddings have had our Remi as a guest! Good luck with your new baby. I am sure he will bring you lots of love. |

| There have been a couple threads on here about larger dogs with little Yorkies. Some people don't have any trouble, but I wouldn't want to risk it. I would get another small breed, myself. Good luck and welcome!

| I have been having the same issue. Bobby is 6 months and has really bad seperation issues. It is sooo sad to leave him. I want to get a friend for him to play with while we are away, but I am not sure if he is ready. He does seem to be doing a little better lately. we have graduated him to having full access to the living room. Prior to that he was in a pin and hated it! Let us know what you decide. I think if I do get another baby it will be a yorkie. My hubby wants a bigger dog too, but I am afraid Bobby will get hurt. |

He does have free run all over the house, and I know he loves that because his toys are always all over when I get home, I never leave him for long 2-3 hours at most, and he is peeing on a puppy pad in the master bedroom and while we are gone he always goes on it, so I have never thought about locking him up, because he is so good. But it seems like he is just waiting for us whenever we get home, but it might just be because he can hear the door opener and knows someone is home... But the TV thing might be good, sometimes it seems like he is watching it.. haha. Last edited by jlmassey1; 12-17-2007 at 08:25 PM. | |

| Welcome to YT!! We're so glad to have you both here. I would shy away from a big dog, but another yorkie or another small breed can be wonderful. A pair always has each other to play with, sleep with, etc. Cody sounds like a sweetie! I would encourage you to sign him for our new Little Gentleman's Club - we are going to have so much fun! Here's the thread to sign up on http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=106129

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I just got a 6 month old 2 .4 ounce Yorkie and she seems so fragile. I also have a 2 year old 4.5 lb yorkie and a 5 .3 lb yorkie and a 10 lb older pom. When I got the 2 year old she was 3.3 lbs and 13 months old and my 2 1/2 year old was very laid back and never bothered her. SHe on the other hand beats up the 2 1/2 year old. I am very nervous with Dixie, my new 6 month old as she seems so fragile, I do noyt leave her alone with the other dogs just in case. I would be fraid to bring in a larger dog right now. Can you talk him into a nother Yorkie, maybe a bit bigger?

| My yorkies brother is a 76 pound boxer (built like a race horse). They sleep with each other, play with each other, and just love each other. My boxer has always been around my children since birth and he is very gentle. I also want to mention that Snickers (the yorkie) is no little yorkie, he is about 8.5 pounds. My boxer and yorkie have free run of the house when we are gone. When we come home we can always find them laying next to each other at the top of the steps. In our house it is Snickers (the yorkie) who hurts Seamus (the boxer) when they play (a boxers big saggie lips are very sensitive to little yorkie teeth ). |

| I have a 5 lb yorkie (Bella) and an 80 lb black Lab (Lucee). Lucee is soooo gentle with Bella and they get along wonderfully BUT I would not leave them alone together because I'm afraid Bella would get hurt. It would be an accident but it could definitely happen. I always supervise their play because sometimes they BOTH get very excited and I have to break it up. I originally hoped to leave them alone together while we're at work so they would have the companionship of each other but I now know that this is not possible. I would recommend getting a smaller dog if you want to be able to leave them home alone together.

| If you were to get some kind of a camera, you would probably see that your baby sleeps most of the time that you're gone..They say they sleep 20 hours a day(typically). he probably is getting up and going to the door when you get home.. sometimes, it is safer just to have the one when you're not home. Just give your baby extra attention when you're home with him. I, myself wouldn't chance getting a bigger puppy to put with him, the can take a paw to play and not realizing, do some serious damage or even kill the little one. |
