A bit frustrated I believe that I have found my breeder. I feel really good about her, but in the back of my mind I feel like I *should* be rescuing a dog from a shelter or rescue. When I go into a site like craigslist, for example, I get blasted for talking about going to a breeder, because how do I know she is not a BYB? Here is where the problem lies. The breeder that I have found is about a 3 hour flight away from me...and she is not close enough for me to go and visit. (However, she thought at first that I was in her city and did invite me over to take a look). I have been told that a breeder is not reputable unless he/she shows her dogs. My breeder does not, she loves yorkies and is following her passion. (Is this a bad thing, not to be showing???) Another bit of advice, is that she should have an active waiting list...should not have puppies on demand. She just happens to be new, has only been breeding for a couple of years (I think she's on her 4th litter). She sells her dogs on kijiji, that is where I first found her. I have looked at her website, asked her tonnes of questions...and she seems like she's NOT a BYB...but how can I tell? I have also been told that the breeder should ask ME lots of questions, about myself and my situation...but I kind of nixed that idea because my first email to her was LOOOOOONG and I told her all about me, my family and really, my life story...after being turned away so many times by other breeders/rescues/shelters...I wanted to put my best foot forward. Now, I'll never know if she would have asked me these important questions or would have just told me the price. It would be easy enough for me to go look for another breeder, and there are a few that are in fact closer, but none of them will even consider me because I have a 3 year old (she will be nearly 4 by the time we get our pup)..."my" breeder is the only one who will consider a family with kids, that I know of anyways. (Incidentally, to those who dont think yorkies belong in homes without kids......what happens if you adopt/sell to a childless couple who a year down the road has a baby?) I'm confused.....I think my breeder is a good one, but how do I know I'm not selling her to myself because she's sorta kinda the only one? I really dont want to put her website on here because 1) she might be a YT member and after all the talks/emails I've gone through with her, I'd hate for her to think I'm doubting her now (lol) and 2) ok, there is no number 2. I'm wondering....are there any Yorkie experts out there, who could possibly PM me, so I could send you her website, so you could take a look for yourself? (And please, dont be a breeder...you could be her, lol, and dont know a breeder) Thanks...sorry for the long post....even though it is months away, I'm stressing out about this...it is going to cost me $2000...it isnt the money, I'd spend 10 x that on her, but I dont want to pay $2000 to a BYB. Ok, thats it

i actually would like to have some info on this too. i have been researching some breeders in Toronto, but dont really know how to tell is they are BYB or not. like what if someone has a passion for the breed, but does not show? is everyone who breeds in their home and doesnt show considered a BYB? i dont care if a pup is show quality since i will never breed or show, but i also dont want to contribute to the degeneration of the breed...

I have found over the last few years, that a lot of good breeders don't care if you have kids, as long as the kids have been brought up not to hurt dogs, and the correct way to handle them..My g-kids are 5 and 8 and have been raised around dogs and treat them with respect and lots of love..I have seen adults do more damage to a dog, than a child ever would dream of doing..If I were a breeder, I would not have any problem having one of my babies go to a home with children, as you are right, someone may not have kids now, but may on down the road, and then that puppy would get pushed away(have seen that happen numerous times)..you can pm me, I would love to see her website..

This is a really good chart that shows you the difference between reputable breeders and backyard breeders. http://www.geocities.com/Petsburgh/Fair/1901/chart.html The reason why showing is so important is that it proves that you are dealing with a breeder who knows the Yorkie standard and is breeding to it. That is the only way you can be sure to get a Yorkie who looks and acts like a Yorkie is supposed to. Puppies from show breeders come from long, proven lines and those puppies have a much better chance of being genetically sound and healthy.

I don't believe you have to show to be a good breeder, my husbands family used to show and stopped because it was very political ( same dogs always won) I breed for the standard and do not feel I HAVE to show, but I also don't charge $2000. for a pup either. JMO
