| Question about collars I've read and was told by the breeder not to use a collar, but I keep seeing babies with them on. It also concerns me because I want to take Snickers to the groomers but won't they put something around his neck to keep him still. When can they start wearing collars? Just a tad bit confused

| I'm sorry you're confused. Collars are okay to hang tags from but do not attach a leash to one. This causes way too much strain on a Yorkie's neck and can lead to collapsed trachea. Harnesses are much safer and you can hang tags from them too. Some people just prefer to use the collar for tags and the harness for a leash. You don't need a collar at all. Some people just don't know that Yorkies should wear harnesses. That is why you see them in collars. Also, I would never recommend leaving a harness or collar on your dog while it is unsupervised. They will put a noose around your dog's neck at the groomers. I groom my dog at home because there are way too many reports of groomers leaving the table and the dog strangling itself, leaving dogs to overheat in drying cages, abusing, neglecting... Of course there are some good groomers but please be careful.

| Well from what Ive heard, collars arent good because their tracheas (sp) or whatever are fragile. I use a harness when taking Meka for walks and things. If we're going out and I know Im gonna hold her most of the time and depending on her outfit, I'll put it on as an accessory...

Luvs Lulu Donating Member | I started home grooming as well because I worried about them leaving them on a lead. When I first started grooming lulu myself I had to use her leash as a lead but I was very careful about how tight it was and not leaving her unattended. The collar is fine to hang some thing cute or as a part of dress up but not good to walk them with. I have seen in the neighborhood a few people walking yorkies on collars and it amazes me.

| I thought they couldn't wear them (with leash) as puppies but now I see it's never (with leash). I like a harness for walking anyway. I'll probably get one as an accessory though. Thanks for clearing that up for me.

Luvs Lulu Donating Member | Lulu has some bling ones for dress up but I don't use it with the leash. Sh eis not a puller when I walk her but you never know if something goes wrong. The harness is best anyhow because just in case you can pull them up fast.

| My little guys are so tiny I was wondering about putting collars with bells on them so I can hear them moving around. I have a collar with tags on their mom and she still sneaks up on me so I am thinking about adding a bell but, I don't if it is ok for the babies. We always use a harness for walking but when we are going somewhere that I will be carrying her I just have the collar for tags because or town has a registration law. |

| I use harnesses as well. Also, I ask my groomers to put the noose (sp) around my babies under their front legs and not around their necks. |

| Collars can also be dangerous as they can accidentally hang/strangle a puppy. We had a member on another forum lose her puppy in a tragic accident when his collar got caught on his expen and he hung himself. The only collar that is truly safe for a little dog is a cat's breakaway collar. |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | i leave a collar on Morgan 24/7 and only take it off for baths and brushing. She has two tags on her collar and they jingle when she walks so i know where she is. I am not worried about anything happening to her when i'm not home.

| You have been given some fantastic advice from our very knowledgeable members. I would like to add my own word of caution about Break-Away collars..... Please "test" the collar before leaving it on your furkid. Some of the collars take a surprising amount of pulling and tugging and twisting to cause the buckles to come loose. The manufacturer of the buckles I use claims that it takes only 4 lbs. of pressure to cause the buckle to come apart -- although I don't have any scientific way to "measure" the force exerted on the buckle, I wouldn't feel entirely safe leaving on a young pup -- the choking hazard is too great. An adult would probably be able to fight enough to cause the buckle to release. |

| Lacy just wears a collar for decoration and to put her ID tag on (w/ her name and my phone number). But I only walk her with a harness and leash

| We only use harnesses. It's not worth taking a chance to me.

I never use any sort of collar. It's not worth the risk. I've heard too many horror stories. I clip the ID tags right to the harness. On the subject of ID tags, if your dog has any medical condition like my Lady does, be sure to get a medical alert tag made to attach also. | |
