Just wondering I have been reading lots of post about male dogs marking, and I am wondering why they may mark. I have 2 male dogs, a 7 month yorkie and a 6 year boxer. My dogs do not mark in the house ever. My yorkie (who is still a puppy has only had 5-6 accidents in the house in the 5 months that we have had him. He, alog with our boxer have the run of the house even when we are not home. I stoped crating our yorkie when he was 16 weeks old and have never had a problem. He has been lifting his leg since he was 10 weeks old, always outside. I am just wondering if the people who have making issues and use belly bands let their dogs go outside to mark. My boxer has been neutered since he was 6 months old and will mark every mail box in sight, so will my yorkie. I think that this is great and I am glad that I provide them with the oppertunity to get it out of their system when they are out. I have trained my yorkie the same way I trained my boxer. His small size does not make it ok for him to break house rules (no using the bathroom in the house, not barking, no begging, no chewing, or biting). My vet was always against pee pee pads. She told me from the begining that if you make it ok for them to pee in your house they are going to do it. She said to think of him as another boxer and give him the same exersicise and disipline. Am I just lucky that he is so good, or is it because I let him be a dog. He goes outside pees on what ever he wants, chases squirles, rolls in the leaves, gets filthy but has fun doing it. I don't treat him like a baby (I have three young kids already). I don't carry him in a purse (I already have to carry a diaper bag and a 27 pound todler). I am just so happy that he will go on a nice long relaxing walk, and at the end of a long day being a stay at home mom I can relax with my big dog at my side, my little dog on my lap and a big glass of wine in my hand. :) :) :) |
Some of us are just luckier than others that our dogs mark outside. My boy Chachi also marks outside but never has in the house |
You know some dogs do mark and some do not. I have a 1 yr old Yorkie that marked EVERYTHING in the house (including me when I was sitting on the floor) I had him neutered at 6 months and he just stopped but now I have an 8 month old mix breed and he marks everything outside even the blades of grass that are taller than others but NEVER inside. He is not neutered yet either as he had COPV and the vet did not want to neuter him until it cleared up. Well now its the holiday season and I do not want to neuter him and then travel it isn't fair to him. In the same token I just finally housebroke my Yorkie and the mix has been trained since he was 5 months old. Some dogs are easier than others I guess. You were just lucky you had all easy dogs. By the way how do you keep them from barking? I am having an issue with both mine barking at everything? |
It isn't just males that mark. My female marks (at the petstore and when we go visiting). She marks on walks but I discourage it. I try not to let her do it on people's lawns and by mailboxes since that is someone else's property. I don't think marking is acceptable anywhere and I do understand it is very natural. It is hard to stop though. I agree about the pee pad but some people have no choice. I would never expect a Yorkie to hold it for 8-10 hours like a bigger dog (although some can) because that is just too long. If nobody is there to let them out, pee pads it is.:) |
I definitely think you are lucky. I wish I could train Toby to be that way. He usually will mark everything outside. But the minute we enter a new place he would love to mark everything in there if I let him. He's not neutered yet, but we are hoping to do so soon. He's already 9 months and still not fully potty trained so I am starting to lose hope. But perhaps the problem is too that we baby him. Well I suppose all we can do is keep working with him and hopefully eventually he will get it that he is to only potty outside. |

Thanks ali I will try that I have people stop here a lot too since I babysit and my dogs bark at every car door. I like the fact they bark when someone knocks but not when a car pulls up as I live in town and they can hear when the neighbors are home and bark about it. |
I posted a question about whether I should neuter Otis or not and some of the others ask me if he has started marking in the house and that it would only get worse if I didn't get him neutered but he never marks inside or outside and he will be six months old in Jan. He is completely house broke, only has accidents if I don't let him out when he tells me he needs to go, he will let me know usually about two or three times then he finds somewhere to do it if I don't pay attention to him which is hardly ever I try to let him out when he needs to go. He sometimes wants to hump on his big sister or a toy, but he does not mark anywhere, which he may later on. I think I will get him neutered sometime in Jan. just because they say it is healthier for them and someone told me that it will make him a better pet? (I don't know) my husband really don't want to get him neutered so he may make me change my mind. I DON'T KNOW!!!! |
