| Hello, new member, old problem Hello all. I just found this forum, as I have been looking for solutions to a potty training problem. I have to say that inside dogs are new to me. My DH and I adopted a poodle-rat terrier mix two years ago, then a rat terrier-who knows what mix soon after. They were terrific, so very easy to house train. I live in a rural area, with lots of room to run and play and, unfortunately, am a dump site for many unwanted animals. This past August, someone dropped Aw-GUS, (see avatar) near my home, no collar, no tags, no chip. I did all the usual things to find his owners, called animal control, local vets, left my name and number, etc. Finally, decided to vet him and keep him. He is just soooo cute. The vet said he is about 5 years old. He was so sweet at first the we could not, for the life of us, figure out why someone would dump such a dog. Well, over time, we have found some reasons. Oh, by the way, he is way big for a Yorkie, but looks like one. (Opinions welcome on this too) He weighed 12 pounds on his last vet visit. Problem is.........for the first month or so, he seemed to be completely house trained. He seemed to prefer piddle pads, which was no biggie, even though the other two always ask to go outside. We thought he was using the pads all the time. We fell completely in love with him. Now, more and more, I am finding puddles of pee, on carpet, hard floor, near doors, wherever. And, he has taken to poo'ing on my bathroom rugs. I have piddle pads scattered throughout the house (kinda gross) and use baby gates to confine him to the kitchen when we leave. I think he even lifts his leg on the gates! I am at my wit's end.......what else can I do to get this back on track? |

| Interesting story! If you neuter the guy, that will likely stop his lifting. Other than that, piddle pads are the way to go when you're not home. But when you're home, you can train him to go outside. It'll just take a little getting used to since you haven't had an inside dog before. Good luck! He is awesome! |

| Ooops, should have noted that he is already neutered. Another reason we couldn't believe that no one was looking for him. All three dogs are male, all neutered. He doesn't get along with the other two very well, even though they approach him to play. He grumbles at them and shoos them off. He loves people, sits on your lap and licks you half to death.....EXCEPT, if he is under the sofa or bed, then he is soooo aggressive and bites and snaps. Forget even trying to get him out, it's not possible. Is this common? is there something I can do about it? Last edited by gus07; 12-06-2007 at 03:00 PM. Reason: added second paragraph |

| Oh, I see! Well, there are always ways to retrain your yorkie. If you ever catch him pottying, give him praise when he squats (in the house). But I'm sure others have great suggestions. |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | Hi welcome to YT! What i would suggest with him is starting from scratch. Treat him as if he was a puppy that you want to house break. Try crating him when you are not home, at night, and even when you cannot watch him. Hopefully he will not go in his crate. As soon as you come home or wake up in the AM take him outside to potty. If he hasn't gone in his crate he will have to go. Put him on a leash, take him out, and tell him to go potty. Do not go back inside until he does. If your out there for a long time and he still hasn't gone, take him back inside and put him back in teh crate. Then 5 minutes later take him directly outside again and repeat. This will take time since he is older but it will work if you stick to it. Another thing you can try is to put a belly band on him to prevent him from marking in the house.

| Welcome. Is he neutered. Usually if they are they won't mark.

| Belly band, hmmmmm I think I may try the belly band thing. He kind of sneaks off to do his business in another room while we are relaxing and watching tv at night or if we are distracted, going to the bathroom, even when we are asleep. He likes to sleep in our bed, and is pretty good about it, but does get down and go pee in the worst places (at least not in the bed, thank goodness) I did try crating him, it lasted about three nights. He complained and whined so much that my DH couldn't stand it. He is a light sleeper and it drove him nuts. So he would let him out and put him in bed, therefore, reinforcing the whining and crying |

| There are training sprays that worked great for my dogs, I have a Yorkie and a Jack Russel and it worked for both of them. It is called Potty Training Aid it train pets where to urinate. It works for indoor and outdoor use. You just spray it where you want them to go and let them smell it after you spray it. Repeating, do the same routine over and over is how dogs learn to do something. Just keep the same potty routine and he should pick up on it..If you think you want to try the spray you can find it on www.carealotpets.com Simple Solution potty training aid....You said he was too big to be a Yorkie, well some Yorkies are larger. I have one that will be about 10lbs full grown, that doesn't mean that he is not full stock if he is big..There is just more of him to love......

Can you maybe put his crate in a room furthest from your bed room so that you can't hear him, or get your husband ear plugs?
