| Alfie wont wear a collar!!!! Alfie is just over 11 weeks old now and hates wearing a collar. I have tried several types, even lovely soft ones for kittens but still he is not happy. When I have tried it on him he scratches at his neck constantly and then rolls against furniture etc to try and get it off, whilst crying! Any suggestions how to get him to actually become happy with one would be a great help. I do have a small harness for him also, he will kind of tolerate that, but only just! Lol.

| His harness is safer for him to wear anyway, so you should just encourage his wearing of that. Just give him treats and love when he's being a good boy with his harness on.

| Thanks for your reply Anna. The UK laws are a bit confusing to me. They state that all dogs in a public place must wear a collar and identity tag. I am just wondering if an identity tag attatched to the harness will suffice. We have Jamie (jack x beagle) who wears a collar at all times. The problem is I live in a small village and some residents have been complaining about dogs fouling in public places where children play, which I fully agree with should not happen. However this means there is a "doggy watch" going on and I would hate to be in trouble should alfie not be all "legal" for when he does start to go out. Ohh just a thought, maybe it will be worth contacting the RSPCA and getting their views on the matter.

| You can do both collar and harness, with all your ID tags on the collar. In case Alfie runs out the door before you can put your harness on at least he can be identified. Since you have such a little guy, I would recommend putting on the harness for when you go out for walks to prevent collapsed trachea. When you put the collar on him treat and reward him, soon enough he will forget about the collar and just want the treats.

| My Pixie is 6 months and has never worn a collar, i use a harness or a little slip lead when out walking. she's also quite funny about having things put over her head, once its over she's fine.

| You should put her collar on and then play with her or feed her with it on so she forgets that she is wearing it and sees it as being fun when she has it on. |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | Honestly i'd put the collar on him and let him fight and try to get it off until he tires himself out. He'll get used it to believe me. If you keep taking it off him he's just gonna learn that he can carry on and cry if he doesn't like something and mommy will take it off. you can put in it and play with him or feed him so that it distracts him at first. He'll get used to it. Every other collar wearing dog has. Mine wears a collar at all times and then we use a harness when walking.

| Thank you for your replies. Guess I really should try and get alfie used to his collar. I think hes already got us wrapped around his little paw lol. As already pointed out, if alfie did manage for some reason manage to sneak outside, he would have a collar on with identity tag.

| Please get a harness and dont use the collar. You will not get into trouble using a harness. Police just needs to see the dog on a leash, it doesnt matter if its collar or harness. Harness is a lot safer, and easier on your pups neck!!!! And he will get used to it once you go outside and he starts exploring new things. Good luck |

YT 2000 Club Member | we just brought Jeter home last Friday and he is 9 weeks and 4 day's old. He hates his collar too but I keep it on him because it has a bell on it so w can hear him while he is out and about the house. He will dig at it and all that trying to get it off of him but over the day's he has done it less and less. If he is playing his mind is totaly off having the collar on at all. Jeter is too small for his harness, he can walk right out of it and I have it on the smallest setting it can go. He is to little right now for taking for walks so thankfully I do not have to worry about taking him for a walk yet. I was going to look for a smaller harness for him this weekend, maybe even look into a harness for a ferret If I have to! Good luck getting your little one used to the collar. I think that you best bet would be to just keep it on him like I did with my Jeter. We have to have tags on the dog at all time too in the county that we live in. Any dog 3 months or older have to have them displayed, they had an article in the paper recently to reminding people that it is time to renew them.

We have a harness which we shall be using I was just thinking about a collar to wear also, but not to use other than to hold an identity tag, should he escape for whatever reason.

Alfie hasnt been out for walks either but I have been taking him for "walks" in the garden to get him used to the harness for when we do go out.

| Collars aren't really good for our little ones, because of the chance of collapsing the trachea, so I'd try out a harness. He'll get use to it.
