| Making a tough decision We have a little yorkie boy named Lyric who is 2 years old, who we just can't seem to get potty trained. He is about 75-80% trained and will go outside but also has frequent accidents in the house. It's really taking it's toll now that 1) our baby will be crawling soon and 2) it's gotten to the point that we now just need to replace the carpet in our living room. We can no longer clean it to get the smell out-which is beyond embarrassing when company is here. The thought of giving him up has now entered my mind and I am so devastatingly torn. We have tried everything in the last 2 years. We have considered a doggy door but I fear even that will not make a difference as he can be playing outside for at least 30 minutes, and he will come in and pee. I just don't know what more we can do. The thought of even trying to find a home that will love him like I do tears me up inside and I've been crying about it all week. I know what kind of owners there are out there and I know what kind of owner I am and it terrifies me. He sleeps with us, he gets so much love from even my mom and sister, he is part of the family. But I keep telling myself that our daughter should not and can not be crawling on disgusting carpet. I don't believe a dog should live in a kennel or crate. IMHO I think it's mean and so that would never be an option for us. I don't even know why I am posting this. I'm looking for help, or a new home for him, I don't know. I'm so torn, I feel so awful. I look at him and think, he's going to hate me and be miserable, but then I look at my baby and don't know what to do. Please don't hate me for posting this as I know many people will think I'm a horrible person for even considering it, but I just don't know what else to do.

| I'm sorry that you are having to deal with this Is there any chance you could replace the carpet with tile so that you don't have to deal with the carpet issues? I know that cleaning up accidents is much easier on tile or hardwood than carpet. Of course then your little baby wouldn't have the soft carpet to crawl on. I'm sorry, I am not much help here but I did want to say that I feel for you and I hope you can come to a solution that is best for your family.

BANNED FOR NOT MAILING PRODUCTS PURCHASED | This is a very tough decision and I'm sure it will be very hard. You may have to re-train him. If I were you, I would keep him in his crate for 1 week straight, only let him out to go potty, when he comes back in, he gets a treat for his good potty behavior, you can play with him, but then he goes right back in his crate. This may seem mean, but it should work. The thing with yorkies is some never get fully 100% potty trained, people jump into buying a yorkie cause they are so cute and now days they are so popular, but then they don't do any research, if they did, then they would know how hard yorkies can be to potty train. I wish you the best of luck, hopefully you can get him trained. |

| Have you considered sending him to boot camp? Have him go to a training/boarding facility and go through focused potty training.

| I think it can be hard to potty train little dogs because when they ask to go outside, it's easy to miss their signals. I know some people are against potty pads but it sure is easier. That may be too late for your guy. How about a belly band? Just put it on him when he is in the house running free, and take it off so he can potty outside. I know it's not ideal, but it will save your carpet. I have friends who have little males and they put belly bands on them when visiting other homes. Some little boys just like to leave their mark. good luck, and I don't blame you for not wanting a baby to crawl on potty carpet. |

| well, since you're not in agreement with crate training it makes it hard. But I do want to let you know, my guys LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE their crates! They run in there all the time (on their own) to take naps or sneak off with a nice chewy treat so no one will bother them. I never shut them in. haha they just fly in there on their own. But, the only other option I can say is either A. pee pads or B. a belly band. Have you tried either of those yet? Feel free to PM me and I can further help you out. My dogs will go outside, but yet they still use their pee pad in the house. It's a saving grace! One of my males gets a belly band b/c he thinks marking furniture is fun (NOT FOR ME!).

My Tiny Treasures Donating Member | Keep your baby boy and invest in belly bands. He will pee in them on a womens maxi pad and you just change it every few hours. I have 3 boys in them and I'd rather change diapers than clean up pee. If you have anymore questions on them please feel free to PM me. Seriously, you'll never have pee on your carpet again and your baby will not be in a crate. Good luck with what you decide!!!! |

| Breny is right...the belly bands are the way to go. My Joey wears one at all times unless he is in his crate (if we leave) and when he goes outside. I use half of an Equate Regular pad.

| I've never thought of the Bella Bands as an option but would love to try them out. Do the dogs that are in them try to get them off? I honestly did not even think of them. You guys are great! I have been so overwhelmed with the new baby and everything that I didn't even think to come here until tonight. I used to frequent this sight but have been gone for quite some time. And I don't want to sound mean, but to the poster that was talking about "people who don't research". I did. I knew it would be tough but not this tough. He is my second yorkie and believe me I knew it would be tough training him, what I didn't know when we got him was that I would eventually have a child and my thoughts on potty floor would be completely changed. So please don't put me into that category. Thank you for all of the thoughts. I really need to find a Bella Band that I can order tonight. I tried the one website listed above but it was for cloth diapers for real babies. Where can I get one or ten ?

| Hi....I think I am in a similar situation like you....I have two little yorkie boys.....My kids are all grown and moved out..... However, my youngest daughter has a baby girl and I watch her during the day while daughter is in college.....I am working really hard with the boys on their potty training...We have good days and bad days....I was really concerned about Brooklyn crawling on carpets that they had pottied on....I tried to keep on top of it but sometimes they go and I do not see it til too late.... ...I had to resort to the Belly bands.....They are great....No more accidents on the carpets and the baby can crawl....I keep the baby gates up to the kitchen area so she can't get to the pads or my cabinets...lol ..but the boys can slip under the gate to the pad if need be.....The belly bands have made life sooooo much easier for me....You really should look into them.....The boys are getting to the point where they let me know when they need to go or if they had already gone...The pad catches the urine in case of accident....I get my pads at the dollar tree - 16 for $1...And I bought a couple of the bands from GoFetch here on YT..... | I understand how frustrated you are. Tilly was 3 yrs old when we bought her and she was a sure stinker when it came to getting her potty broke. I spent many many nights just crying because she wasn't learning. I then realized it was more me and her. She was trying to tell me I just wasn't watching as close as I thought she was. I would watch the clock, every couple of hours I would take her out, and we got her in February and we stayed outside for as long as it took. Sounds mean, but she realized the faster I go out here and potty, the faster I get to go inside. Also, everytime she went she got a treat. I didn't really notice her really being potty broke until months later. I was pregnant and potty training her and worried about the crawling issue too. Things eventually worked out and she got the hang of it. I'm not saying Tilly is 100% potty trained, she still has accidents sometimes if we are gone for awhile. I don't blame her though, she had nobody to tell her to go out. Hang in there though, things will all work out.

| As a first time male Yorkie Momma and a senior, Charlie wears a belly band when I am at work, and when I traveled to my daughters home this summer, he wore one while we were in the house. As for the smell, I do know what you are talking about because Sophie would pee, and I became lax about having her wear a girlie pad during the day. Once they leave their scent, it is all over. However, here is a link http://www.dogchatforum.com/dog_urine_odor.htm and it really works. The vinegar is initially strong, but does the trick. Follow through with the entire process, saves money and they don't return. Your rug is probably soaked through to the pad and installation of new carpet is the only remedy to remove the smell and be clean for the baby. Good luck and please think about the belly band. It is easy to make, strip of 4" double wide flannel, velcro on each end and measure the circumference of your pup's belly with enough overlap to accommodate the pad (I use incontinence pads) and velcro. I made Charlie's in less than 5 minutes. Honestly, you will sigh a great relief to not have to worry about marking. Warmly, Deborah
