Last night I put a deposit on a cute little yorkie because i wanted a small dog that does not shed and my wife fell in love with it. so i came home and come to find they are extremely hard to housetrain and i definately do not want a dog that goes to the bathroom everywhere. what do you guys think?????

I think they are just like any other dog... you need patience, consistency and a plan...if anything, at least their poops are LITTLE!

I have 4 babies and yes then can be a bit hard to pottie train, But with peepads and lots of praise and attention it can be done, All mine are fully trained with very few accidents, I dont think they are any harder then any other breed, There are many people here that can give you some great advise

Hi...does the breeder you put a deposit down with paper train their pups? I noticed that it really helps if they do. I would not anticipate getting another breed because of potty training as you would have to potty train any puppy you get unless thay come to you already trained. I agree with whet everyone else has been saying that with patience and time you'll get your little baby potty trained. And their pee's and poo are soo small, they are easy to get right up

. IMO-Yorkshire Terriers are such a wonderful breed and an all around joy to have around, I woulld not trade mine in for an accident-proof super dog, if there was one.

yes, they do have paper down in the crates.

Its not as hard as people say. As long as you are consistent and praise like crazy when they do it right, then it should be easy. It took my yorkie about 2 months to finally get %100 house trained. Just don't get flustrated and hit the dog. Also, if you get upset and stressed about it, try not to let your yorkie notice it. When you are stressed, they tend to get stressed or upset. This site has TONS of information on training. Just read up and do your research and you should be fine. Good Luck!

I've also heard that Yorkies are harder to housebreak, but know that anything worth having is worth some work. Like everyone says, patience, love and understanding will prevail. Besides, some real children are also harder than others to potty train. In that case, we certainly can't give them back, so why should be even think of doing that to a furbaby? Good luck, I'm sure everything will work out. By the way, we currently have 5 Yorkies!

Welcome to YT. They are a little stubborn when it comes to potty training, but you can keep them contained in a playpen while you're potty training them, and this way you won't have a mess all over your house.

You didn't leave him out while you were gone did you? Your house is too big a space for a puppy to have run of... they need a crate or tiny area to be able to be trained properly!

I think small dogs in general are much harder to housetrain. Everyone I know who has Yorkies as well as other breeds do say that they are harder to housetrain, but it can be done.

How successful you are with housebreaking him depends a lot on you. You will have to watch him at all times when he is loose and keep him confined when you can't. Most potty training problems are the result of the owner giving a puppy too much freedom. If I puppy gets used to going in inappropriate places it is much harder to housetrain him as he will be drawn back to the same spot.

How old will he be when you bring him home? Yorkies should stay with their mothers until they are twelve weeks old. A good breeder will begin pee pad training the puppies before they go to their new homes. This will get him off to a good start. Puppies raised in cages that get used to going potty in the same area that they eat or sleep can be really hard or even impossible to completely housebreak.

Another consideration is whether or not someone will be home with him during the day. If he is left alone much of the time potty training will be much harder and take longer because you won't be home to reinforce positive behavior.

Since you have chosen a male, you must be sure to get him neutered as soon as your vet thinks it's safe so he doesn't start to mark his territory by lifting his leg. Marking in the house seems to be a little dog thing.

You will have to accept the fact that he will have accidents the house. That's just part of being a puppy. If you can live with that and are willing to work hard to housetrain him, you should be successful.

I don't think yorkies are any more difficult to train than any other breed. All dogs require consistency and a good game plan. I think some people find it harder to potty train because they aren't as consistent with a yorkie as they would be with a great dane! Imagine if a great dane pooped in your house, you would do everything in your power to stop it from happening again.

When a yorkie poops it is annoying, but easy to clean up, so people aren't as committed and consistent as they could be.

That being said, there are dogs that are harder to train than others! Doesn't mean that yorkies are harder to train overall, though.

My litter of eight week old puppies are almost completely pad trained.
