Question First night home question

Hi all. I finally got my little CoCo. She is so cute. Anyway, she has been in the crate off and on all day. I have it set up in the kitchen, with a corner for food and water, a corner with the pee pad, which she already is using well, and a corner with blankets for a bed with a few little toys. She is snoozing right now cause the kids had her busy.

I am not sure what to really do tonight. Do i leave her in the crate downstairs in the kitchen and go up to bed?? do i sleep on the couch tonight?? Do i bring a smaller crate upstairs?? please help on any info to help get me started on the right track. I most likely will not hear her if i am upstairs and she is downstairs, which acually would be good, cause if i heard her cry all night, i would not be able to keep her in there and ignore her, although it might not be good cause i am supposed to be paying attention to her. totally don't know what to do.

actually in the bed?? i was thinking about that, but my husband thinks someone will crush her. I don't think it would be me, cause i have had 2 kids and wake up with the slightest noise, but i also don't want her peeing on the bed. i would love to do that. Shouldn't she have her food and water overnight though while she is young??

I left Elphaba downstairs in the crate the first 2 months, its only been the past week and half she's been in bed with me. The first night she cried ALL night. I put a hot water bottle in the bed (wrapped in a towel) and left her. I did go down a couple of times to check on her...but waited til she quieted down because I didn't want her to think that crying meant she got out. By the second night she cried a little when I first put her in...but then not another peep all night. She slept quietly through the night the first month after that. The second month she was home she started screaming around 2-3am. By the time I'd go downstairs she's already peed her crate. Now that she's upstairs in bed with me she sleeps through the night with no accidents or middle of the night trips out.

I would keep her in the smaller crate, either downstairs or (if you can ignore her whining) in your bedroom where she can see you. The crate should only be big enough for her to stand, turn, and lay down.

Keep in mind that (depending on her current age -- I'm assuming somewhere between 8-12 weeks), you are going to have to get up during the night for the next few months, progressively less and less. I wouldn't leave food and water in her crate all night, but instead get up 2-3 times during the night to allow her to potty, and eat and drink.

If you go to bed at 11pm, set your alarm for 2am. Let her out for maybe 10 minutes. Take her to her designated pee area, place her down, and praise her lavishly if/when she pees. Place her back in the crate, give her a treat, and go back to bed. You have to ignore her whining if you want her crate trained. Depending on her age and temperment, you may have to start off at smaller increments. Maybe every hour or so. It may be hard, but it will be better in the long run, I think. Never let her out while she's whining. If you can't bear it anymore and want to let her out, only open the crate when she is quiet. You don't want her to learn that crying = reward.

I'm not a trainer, so this is a pedestrian opinion. It seems to follow everything that I have read and been taught about crate training, though. Don't expect miracles. It will take time and you will lose sleep. Preparing yourself for that is the best way to keep the stress levels low when you are trying to urge her to pee at 4'30 in the morning.

My tiger has slept with me since the first day we got him. I bring his "blanket" into bed and make a little bed in between me and my husband! And for the rolling over thing, if you put him up by pillows and make a little cubby for him that shouldn't happen. I hope this helps Oh and congrats on your new fur baby!!! Give her kisses from us

i HIGHLY suggest putting her in a smaller crate... you ONLY want to leave enough room for her to lay down.. so you might have to pack the back of the crate with a towel or someting to limit her ability to move int he crate. Put her by your bed otnight. Dogs are pack animals and sleep with their family. Also she will NOT be able to go all night without peeing, so if she is downstairs she will pee in her crate because you won't be bale to hear her cry. When she cries.. wait for a pause in the crying.. let her out to pee.. if she does... HUGE AMOUNT OF PRAISE and then back in her crate.. if she keeps crying let her cry it out... you know she has peed and is fine... Layla only cried the first and second night however did not sleep through until she was around 8 months.. so oyu need to have her near you so you can hear her. To this day (Layla is a year and a half) she LOVES her crate... tonight she actually asked to go in it because she was just so tired. Good luck... you'll be up a lot but we've all been there if she has an accident don't get mad.. just change her crate, take her outside and then put her back in

EXCELLENT advice!

Murfee was 8 weeks old when we got him and he has slept in our bed with us for 4 years and never has once peed on the bed and we have never rolled over on him. I know each person is different so good luck.

One of the first nites we got Zoe, I tried to let her sleep with us and I hardly slept at all and then at 1am, she fell out of bed. It just about gave me a heart attack and scared her as well. After that, she was always put in her crate and she seems fine with it but the first couple of nites she did whine. Good luck whatever you decide.

Whatever you decide I highly recommend that you have her in your room. Its not fair to take her away from her mom and littermates and then expect her to sleep all alone. Also, personally, I have never left a puppy to cry, ever. If its comfort they want then comfort they get, and i'm not really a fan of crates. Mine are in the bed from day 1, its been like that for years and it works great. We all get a fantastic nights sleep with no disturbances.

However, if you don't want her in the bed then I have a suggestion, put her in a comfy little bed on the bedroom floor and underneath and around the bed put some newspaper down, when she wakes up and gets out of the bed the noise she will make on the paper should wake you up, you can then take her to her toileting area and comfort her until she is really to fall back to sleep by herself.

thanks again everyone.

I had a pretty good night. my husband likes to stay up late and play his video games so i left her down here in the kitchen crate to sleep until he was done playing his games. I told him to nudge her up to pee and poop and maybe eat, and then bring her to the upstairs crate with one of her blankets and toys. We blocked the back of the crate off with a towel and that worked great!

She woke up around 2:30 so i brought her down to pee and see if she wanted more to eat or drink. She did not. She did have a bit of a runny poop, but i think it is cause i switched her from wet puppy food to moistened dry puppy food last night.

we came back up to bed and she whined for about 10 minutes, but she was right next to me. So i tried to pet her a bit through the cage. She went to sleep and we woke up with my daughter at 6 this morning. No messie crate! I know it was just the first night but we are off to a good start.

thanks.

Glad it went well Marla! I know my Turbo has such a sensitive tummy. The slightest change (even in weather) and his but gets bad poops. May want to do it a little at a time, to help her not have an upset belly.

Do we get to see any pics of this new little one?
