Buying a Yorkie I don't know if this is an appropriate forum to get information but here goes. We live in Taiwan and it is difficult to find knowledgable people who speak English, especially about yorkies. They are a very uncommon breed here, although yesterday I finally found a breeder who has one male pup (the breeder spoke no English at all!). I went to see him but am still unsure about buying him. This is the situation. We have a four year old Coton de Tulear. When we moved to Taiwan six months ago he and his partner, our Skye terrier, were forced to go into quarantine. Our Skye picked up a terrible infection in the quarantine centre (apparently this is not uncommon) and after a grueling six weeks she died. Needless to say this was devastating for our family and our little coton. It is now four months later and we are thinking we would like to get a new puppy. Our Coton is lonely and I miss my terrier. We would like to get a yorkie. Do they get along well with other dogs? Our coton is a male (neutered). Should the yorkie be a female or does it not matter as we would alse have her spayed/ neutered. Thanks

Came to the right place....... You'll find that this site is awesome and the people here are great at giving advice. Here's what I have to say about my yorkies. All depending on size on whether he would get along with other dogs. I have a yorkie that is 9 lbs full grown and she gets along with any kind of dog. We have Airdales around us and she does fine around them. Now, our little Mia, she's 4 months old and weighs 3 lbs and she is scared to death of any dog bigger than her. If you get a yorkie as a pup, he/she should be fine around other dogs, no matter what kind, as long as the other dog gets along with other dogs. (did that make sense?? lol). I hope you get lots of responses and welcome to a great site!!

I think it dpeneds on the yorkies personality.I was told that yorkies dont get along with kids or other dogs etc..but in my case this isnt true. I have a 13month old yorkie who weighs 2lbīs,she is very dependant of us and doesnt like other dogs at all,but she LOVES my kids! Infact,my 5 year old daughter is holding her most of the day which she loves. My youngest yorkie,Jessi (Jessica) is 8 months old, weighs a little over 7lbīs and LOVES other dogs! She also loves kids..she is super social I honestly think its how they are brought up My two have been raised with my kids,Lady was alone at first which is why I think she doesnt do well with dogs,as she was 7 weeks old when I got her and was our only yorkie from then right up until she was 7 months old,but she does great with my kids. Then Jess came alone and she went from being with her litter mates,to being with Lady & my kids, which is why I think shes great with other dogs, and great with kids aswell

Yorkies can get along quite well with other dogs, the thing is they WILL end up being the alpha dog, no matter what size your other dog is. A friend of mine had a Mastiff, and her yorkie, that she got when the mastif was over 5, just ruled that poor Mastiff all the time. I had a Lab when I first got my first 2 yorkies, and they ended up bossing her around too. How they act depends on how socialized they were by the breeder. That is why you want to make sure you have a good breeder to get your dog from. I have 9 yorkies, and I have 2 that are shy, they were not properly socialized by the person that bred them, and they were taken from their mother too young, and I have one that was abused and after almost 2 years, she will finally go to people she does not know if I hand her to them. My other ones are all very friendly and loveable, including the 3 puppies that were bred by us. They love everyone and will go to anyone that puts their hands down for them to sniff. They are 3 months old right now.

That's so sad that one of your dogs died in quarantine. Does the government or whoever that runs the place even care? As for Yorkies, it just depends I think, on how you raise them and their personalities as well. But as mmyorkies says, the breeder is very, very important, if possible, try to get a look at their own Yorkies and see how well they behave and interact with you.
