First Visit to the Groomer

I was a little disappointed with Sophie's first visit to the groomer. I took her to Petsmart. They did a great job, but they would not cut any of the hair on her back or legs. They said she shouldn't have her hair cut until she was an adult because it would ruin her adult hair. They have a puppy special (up to 5 months of age) just to get them use to going to the groomer. They trimmed the hair around her feet, face, and bum...and of course, she got the cute little bow. It was only $15.00, so I guess I can't complain, but she is getting so shaggy. ha They must have used some special conditioner because she was very soft afterwards.

Is the 'cutting puppy hair will ruin their adult hair' speal true? If so, at what age should they begin? (Sophie's 3 1/2 months.)

I don't think so???..it's a;ready out..how can it effect what's going on at the hair follicle..I'm no expert but I had Maximus taken to the groomer at 4 months and they just trimmed because he was looking like a crazy man..lol..his coat is so thick..now almost a month later and I can see his adult coat coming in..it so shiny at the top of his head..lol...I hope that means silky..

The first day we had Katia we took her to the groomers. Matter of fact that is how she got her name, the groomer was a very pretty girl named Katia. I'm sure they cut her hair on her back though. Also, brush it daily and it looks 10 times better without the cutting.

Anyone know how often we should take them to the groomers?

I'm not a groomer or an expert but when Chanel was little she got a REALLY bad grooming job and the hair did NOT grow back the same - she was over 1-1/2 years old when she got that cut - but the dark hair just never really came back like it had been....I think if your puppy NEEDS to be cut/shaved down due to matts - do it - but if not ....then trims are ok - I'm curious now also about the hair changing.

I bet your puppy looks cute ...it's better to cut to little than too much

I had heard that you should wait until 6 mos to cut their hair because it will grow back coarse...but i agree with luzangela428, i don't understand why. I am getting Gracie the puppy package at Petsmart saturday, do you think your pup looked any different or is it not noticable at all?? Cause if it is not noticiable I think I would be a little disappointed to...I could bathe her and put a bow in her hair for free

Bunny is going for her first grooming and we are also going to Petsmart bc they are the only place in town that will let me stay and hold her on the table. Every single other place said that I would have to leave her for a few hours! I don't think so! AND... I don't want anything around her neck... she is a defiant little one and I am really afraid that anything they placed around her neck to help restrain her could turn into a noose if the groomer got distracted even for a second. I am not going to have them do anything to her body except the hygeine shave on her bum and the pads of her feet. The main reason I am taking her in is bc I want those ears cleaned out and I want her to get in the habit of "having her hair done".

They told me this in grooming school. For some reason the hair will not grow back the same until they are older. I really dont remeber why though. The teachers just said do not cut the back hair unless the owner demands it be done.

Yey! A groomer!!! What do you recommend we tell them we want at a first grooming appt? (I am going to let Bunny grow into a full coat, so should I just have them trim her feet, shave, pluck and clean her ears out, clip nails and express anals? Is there anything else.. she about 5 1.2 mos.

I agree. I can bathe her, brush her, and do the bow thing, too. ha But....they did trim the hair around her eyes, which would make me a tad nervous to do myself. I could tell a small difference in her looks after the visit. Was it worth 15 bucks?? hmmmm .... I guess so. I guess it does get the puppy some exposure to strangers handling them. Also, she seemed quite calm there, and I think she would be more hyper if I had been trimming her hair. I say go for it. It was a nice experience. Had I realized it wasn't a full "groom," I probably wouldn't have been so disappointed.

A petsmart that lets you remain and hold your dog? Lucky
you! My Petsmart didn't even want me anywhere near the
store until I needed to pick him up. Our first trip there was
sort of disappointing in the same way others have described.
I think I expected more...I too would like to know how often
they should go to the groomer. They told me every 8 weeks
is that the norm?

As far as how often to take them... I let them clip the hair around Tino's eyes when he had his first grooming and this was always the first thing that grew out and it was making it so that I had to have a monthly grooming appt. I stopped letting them use clippers on his face and let the hair grow out between his eyes so I can put it up in a nice topknot and now we can go soooo much longer btw appts. I also clip his nails at home too and that was one of the main things I would have them do.

Oh, yes, the main reason I went to Petsmart is they let me stay there while they groomed her. I didn't need to hold her, but I sat right there, and she watched me the whole time. It eased my mind that I didn't have to leave her with strangers....even though I know....hope....the groomers are professionals and wouldn't mistreat her.

If you want her coat to grow out then yes I would just have them do the basics like bath and good conditioning. Inside secret, spring for the milk bath or the deep conditioning treatment if they offer it. The shampoos that most groomers use really aren't the greatest. If you dont want to pay that extra cost ask them to bath with an oatmeal shampoo and if you have to lie and tell them that the dog has allergies. Oatmeal wont dry out the coat as much as a regular shampoo.

If you are getting a cut done take a pic and if possible try to take a large enough pic of the cut that you want. It s very hard to tell what kind of cut you want when the pic is the size of the avatar here.

If the groomer wont let you be in there ask why. If one of the pet parents wants to stay with me while I take care of thier dog that is fine. If the dog gets excited because its parents are there then I ask them if they would mind browsing the store. If they do mind then I do my best and explain that it might not be perfect but at least they were comfortable.
