| yorkie with eye problem... so I was watching tv earlier, and I looked down, and saw my lil gal eyes is abit strange. I picked her up and I just notices her right eyes is swollen, the eyes looks like its popping out (just the end part), and the white part is showing. Im so panicked so I rub her eyes, after 2/3 mins its all fine. now shes fine. my sister saw her rubbing her eyes earlier in the afternoon. I observed her eyes are fine, no redness or irritation, its moist also.. anybody has this problem? I heard theres a disease in s**tzu where the eyeball pop out and they need surgey to put it back in place. anybody knows what cause it? is yorkie also prone to that disease? do i need to worry??? |

| The disease you are referring to is called 'Proptosis.' (Which is really more of a condition that a disease.) It is common with Pekes (which I had once), Shih Tzus, Pugs--flat faced dogs with the more shallow eye sockets. When the eye actually comes out of the socket with these dogs, it is usually from some sort of trama. (Or even being squeezed to hard.) Some dogs (even Yorkies) have more shallow eye sockets that allow part of the white of the eyes to show. Standard and commone with the flat faced dogs, but not so much with other breeds. (Lagophthalmolisis...I think is what it's called.) I've heard this referred to in Yorkies as being 'wall-eyed.' It is my own personal theory that the more breeders try to achieve what is referred to as 'baby doll/teddy bear faces', the more this will become an increasing problem with the breed. Apparently that is part of that "look" often times with the shorter snout. Unfortunately it also yeilds medical issues as well. Anywho...First off, flush the eye well with water. There may be something in it causing irritation. Then I would definately take you little one to the vet to have it looked at. Last edited by BamaFan121s; 11-08-2007 at 06:15 AM. |
