| She is nutsssss Anyone elses furbaby go nuts when you try to put on or take off the harness?? It's easier to put the harness on, than off. When I try to take it off, she gets scared and starts to bite reallllly hard. The harness has a clip at the belly but the neck part has to be pulled over her head. My fingers hurt everytime I try to take it off, cause she goes NUTSSSS.

| Yup, Roxy does the same thing, she even hides when she sees me with it. She loves walks, but hates when I put the harness on and take it off. She tries to bite when I pull it over her head, crazy girl!

Yorkie Lover Donating Member | I know exactly what you are talking about...Magic and Sailor used to do the exact same thing...they still do at times!!! The best thing we did was just keep doing it, everytime we take them out we make them stand still and let us put it on, it took a while for them to understand but now if they want to go outside they have to get their harness on first!!!

| I have a page on bite inhibition training that may help. You really want to make sure that she knows that biting is not allowed under any circumstances. If you'd like, I can e-mail it to you, and if you tell me a little more about her, (age, when she started this behavior, other things she may be quirky about) I might be able to give more specific suggestions. Hope I can help. Stacy |

| Stacy, that would great! She really only bites when I try to put the harness on and off. I've tried taking it slow and praising and kissing her throughout. But I'm beginning to think that she's scared that she will choke or that I will hurt her. She is 17 weeks, and she was a total ankle biter and chewer. I didn't want her to bite even if it's just a puppy thing. So I began using bitter apple spray. A couple of times when she bit, I dabbed a drop of it on her tongue. It only took two times of that for her to stop biting. Now if she starts, I show her the bottle and no more biting. But it doesn't work with the harness. HELP! She is really small too so I don't want to hurt her while I'm putting it on.

| Anybody wanting the bite inhibition page can PM me with their e-mail address and I'll send it along- I'm afraid it's sort of long to post-I don't know if there is rules about that...The bitter apple is okay for aversion therapy, but I prefer to try other methods first, though I have to admit to squirting the water bottle at some of my kids when they were on wild yap missions and having focus problems. |

| I would stop the kissing and praising, It makes the process into a big deal and that may be part of why she's freaking out. She might also be sensing your fear about hurting her and dogs respond to fear with aggression.(which is another reason I'm not big on aversion therapy) First, make sure the harness neck loop can slip quickly over her head, if you need to loosen it a bit and then tighten it afterwards, do so. You want to be quick, calm and FIRM. With a quick snap harness, you should be able to unfasten it with one hand. Use your other hand to hold her head while you unclip. Loop your thumb over the top of her nose, your forefinger behind her ear and your other fingers under her chin. Hold her mouth closed firmly while you undo the clasp and pull the harness over head. You don't need to discuss it with her or negotiate. She needs you to be in charge for her to feel safe. After it's off a little praise is fine, but don't be excited about it. |

| Yes !! Mya starts running on the spot as soon as she hears the second click of the harness being fastened. Mya still wears a kitten harness. The clips are at the back of the neck and on the back. I find it fairly easy to put on and easier to take off.

| You are probably sorry you asked For everybody whose dogs get really excited when they see the harness, I suggest putting it on at odd times of the day very calmly and quickly and then NOT going out, just ignore them for awhile and then take it off. Don't really ignore, keep an eye on them so they don't get caught on anything, but no playing, no treats, no excitement. If they stop expecting an out everytime the harness appears they should calm down. When they Do need an Out try to put the harness on about 5 minutes early and 'ignore' them for those five minutes and then clip on the leash and say out. |

| I've tried being quiet and firm and letting her know that she is safe. But she still freaks out. If I hold her mouth shut, she can wiggle out of it (I can't believe a 2 pounder wiggles out of my grip) and freaks out even more. Help me stacy!!!
