Hello,

I just got an 11 week old yorkie.

He is cute as a button

However, I am having trouble getting him to go on wee wee pads... he will hold it as long as possible and then the second I put him somewhere else, he goes there.

Now, I dont expect him to be trained yet BUT, I saw a few people in the park today who said they have or have had yorkies and all say they are IMPOSSIBLE to potty train. One woman said they are just "walking bladders". I expect accidents NOW... but did I make a HUGE mistake?!!?!?!?!? Is he going to go to the bathroom all over the house forever?

Please tell me a yorkie can be potty trained?

PS: I live on the 40th floor of an apt. building and want to do wee wee pads NOT outdoor training.

It's not impossible, but I do believe it's harder to train them, because they have such tiny bladders. It takes a lot of time and patience, but you can do it. Have faith in your abilities.

Don't let yourself get discouraged already. Wait until he's about 4 or 5 months old. Then get discouraged.

Just kidding!

If you're having trouble even getting him to get started, when you mop up a puddle, wipe some of it on the potty pad. Praise him for even smelling it there. They are "difficult" but they are SMART. Coby is over 7 months old, and we're still working on it.

(In order to save your sanity while you're trying not to get discouraged, consider the belly bands for part of the free time.)

They do have a mind of their own. Ours is trained to go outdoors, and she was fairly well trained within about two months of having her, but I do remember when she was about one year old, she sat down next to my foot and peed on the carpet while I was just standing there. I really don't think they are hard to train, I just think they are hard headed.

Meeko is a high rise yorkie too. He is now 2 and is very good about going to his pad. In the beginning it was hard, but with constant praise he got it. We give him a carrot each and every time he goes on the pad (even when we want to be lazy and say that it would be ok if he didn't get it THIS time, we STILL get up and give him his carrot). He knows too. If we dont actally see him do it, he will bring it to our attention by pawing at us or sometimes doing this sneezing thing. He is so cute and smart. Hey, whatever works you know.

Before really cleaning the scene of a crime (accident

) soak most of it up w/ a wee-wee pad and leave that one down. It should increase their chances of using it, and if it works don't forget to praise like crazy.

I've heard if the pup is being extra-stubborn, i.e. holding it forever when it's time to go, put him back in his crate and try again in a few minutes. This will only work if he doesn't soil the crate of course. They are very smart and will soon learn it's potty time or back in the crate - hopefully they will choose potty!

I have only had my guy for a little more then a month, Leo is 15 weeks now.

This is what I did for the first few days...

** We stay in the family room area, with hardwood. I put out 2 potty pads on each side of the room but with in easy reach of me and him. I put urine on one pad and not on the other. I sat and watched him like a hawk. So, I could learn his potty signal. He would sniff around in a circle, like a crazy dog... as if in a panic. When I saw him do this I would pick him up and put him on the pad and say "potty" and gave him a treat if he did go. I kept this up until he had a day or two with out accidents. Then I would add another little area. (A very important thing I learned during his process: is that he will not potty on a "peed" pad. We have to change the pad everytime he goes!!)

**At night he sleeps in a crate. With just enough room to turn around in. I take him potty before bed. During the first week I would get up in the middle of the night to take him potty... he usaully woke up at 3. I would take him potty and then put him right back to bed. I made it very clear that it was bed time. First thing in the morning I would put him on the potty pad again.

**I never left him any where in the house alone. If I needed to go to another room I carried him there and back.

**I feed on a schedule. So, I can some what predict his potty times. I feed every 4 hours. But I left water out at all times.

Hi! Don't worry! I got two of them, they are 11 weeks today!!! One of them knows he must go on the newspaper (we don't have weewee pads here), the other one is just very stubborn, will go eveywhere except on the newspapers. I'm not desperating, just patient, and also next week I'm getting an instructor to come home and advise me as to how I can better train the little guy!
Try cleaning the place where you puppy goes with some white vinegar? I'm trying that today, when I get back home from work. Will tell you if it works.
