House Breaking & Poo Eating Hi, I am new to this site and am looking for help. I just purchased a 7 month Yorkie and was told she was paper trained. This dog is as paper trained as I am a sky diver. She is only 2.3 lbs. and I didn't want to make her an 'outside' potty goer. I put her in a confined area and she will go out of her way to go anywhere in there but on the paper and even after I take her out to play with her, she will start to go immediately on the floor/carpet. Another problem that I think is very strange is that as soon as she goes to the bathroom, she turns around and eats it before I can even grab her up. I have never seen a dog do this before and it CAN'T be good for her. Can anyone please advise??? Thanks for listening. Carol

| Congrats on your new baby! If you want her to go outside you need to take her out every hour. When she finally goes outside throw on big party... If you cannot keep and eye on her she should be confined in some way whether it be kennel or playpen or baby gates. I have gone as far as doing an umbilical cord. Tieing a rope from her harness to my belt loop that way she goes where I go and she can't run and hide. As far as eating her poop its not unusual. You can purchase something at the pet store called deter. I haven't had this problem but they also say you can mix pumpkin in her food and that can also help. I hope this helps. Just try to be patient with her. I hope this helps. I am curious though did you buy her from a pet shop or a breeder?

I had this problem and was totally grossed out as well. I guess it is part of natural canine behavior to eat their own poo. It gets to be a problem if they try to eat other dogs since they could have worms. Anyway, I used the deter for a few weeks. I just put a pill in with her food and she gobbled it up twice a day. Knock wood, she hasn't eaten any in a few days. Hope this helps you too....good luck!

Thanks so much for your help. I will give your suggestions a try. I guess the key word is 'patience'. I was just so disappointed when she turned out not to be paper trained because I wanted her to have the run of the house and to be able to sleep with me. BTW, when I first got her I was letting her sleep with me just to discover that she had been getting up in the night and peeing at the foot of my bed. I purchased her from a breeder across the country in CA (I am in Maryland) but she was originally born in Brazil.

Another thing to try is an xpen outside that is fairly small. When you take her outside you put her in the pen and give her her cue which can be "go potty" or "do your hurry up" or whatever you choose. If she doesn't go right away begin to walk away. As soon as she goes her out and praise her a lot! She will get the idea that she doesn't get out until she goes. This could work insdie too if you cover the entire floor in the pen with paper so she has to go on the paper. Diapers when in the hpuse is also a saving grace until she is completely house broken. You have to take them off and put them on everytime she goes in the pen to do her business but it will be worth it in the end. Good luck
