| How long before a puppy can go up and down stairs? I'm wondering because I was thinking about getting the poochie bells for potty training, however, my front door is down 5-6 stairs. And I was wondering how that would work for training purposes? |

Therapy Dog Donating Member | Ha - do you have a cat? It didn't take Izzy but a couple of days to go up and down our stairs but it did take her a while to go up and down our basement stairs....they are deeper and she was scared to go down.

| You just have to be careful about the stairs because of their knees. Especially if your stairs are shallow, creating a steeper step. The thrust of going up them and down them, if your dog has loose knees can create a problem not only for the developing joint, but the ligaments around them. If you go to your vet and have them access that your pups knees are tight at this point, and your pup shows interest in going up/down the stairs, then I'd say GO AHEAD, just for the first few trips have him/her on the leash and make sure they navigate the steps properly and don't barrel down them or race up them like her/his tails is on fire! |

| Gracie figured out how to go up the steps by chasing the cat. Going down, however, was another matter. She was so scared. I had to teach her. I think she was about 3 months old when she finally got the hang of it. You could probably start carrying your baby down the stairs to the bells. By the time your baby figures out what the bells are for, he/she will have mastered the stairs.

Lovin' 2 Girls Donating Member | If you're going with the training bells, I'd probably position it at the top of the stairs for now. Teach her to ring it when she needs to go out, then you carry her down until she is able to negotiate the stairs on her own. Then, move the bell down to the door - where, by that time, she'll know the door leads to her potty place. Just an idea.

| I taught Buster how to go up stairs by using treats...I would put one about every 3 steps. He got the hang of it in about a day. Now he races up them! It's the cutest thing....But he is too scared to come down - so he'll sit at the top of the stares patiently waiting for someone to come and bring him back down. |

| Kalina is 5 months and still won't go up or down the stairs or jump off of the sofa, chair, or bed. She's a chicken!! And she's not tiny, so that can't be the reason why.

| I wish I could help, but we have no stairs. Our house is a ranch style. The only thing they do is jump on and off the bed.

| both my furbabies can go up the stairs pretty easy but don't know how to go down . . and I like it that way Tiger is a bigtime leaper though whilst Annika can't get off or on anything 8 inches or higher I guess it all depends on how you train them so age really is not as important I think |

| Practice makes perfect My baby, Yumi, has always been able to go down small steps outside in parks, but she recently started going up and down steeper steps in my brother's home. After first going down was a little scary..but she just kept practicing..in about an hour she was running. She will be 5 months tomorrow! |

| Rocky didn't go up and down them until he was probably 7-8months. He didn't have stairs in his previous home, and when we got him we always carried him up and down the stairs. Bella also wasn't introduced to stairs until she came home with us, but she was running up and down them the second day she was here, and she was 3 months. I didn't allow her to run up and down them, but she was really fast and I didn't always catch her in time.
