| How can I get Rocky to sleep longer? Hi all. Rocky is about 6 months old and gets up every morning between 5:00 and 5:30 am. I am a teacher and during the school months this works out great for me because I get up at that time anyways. I think he has become onditioned to getting up at this time but for the summer months and even just in general, I wish he would sleep an hour or so longer. What is the best way to go about getting him to do this? Ignoring him? If you have any suggestions, I would appreciate it! Thanks |

| I have the same problem with Fred. He wakes up every single morning when the sun rises. If he sees light, he'll bark until his lungs collapse! lol We tried the "ignore" method but the older he got, the less it started working. Now ignoring him doesn't work at all. I hate to go open the crate when he barks because I think it's my fault that I trained him to do that. My breeder told me to be careful and not let him out everytime he barks because he'll get into habit and believe that everytime he barks, I'll let him out. And I have! I would love to hear the solution to this one as well. Sorry I am no help, I'm in the same boat you are! |

| Yes, I'm in the same boat. If she would she at least until 6:00 it would be better. The only time she slept in late is when we took her camping. I guess all the fresh air, being outside all day, and not taking as many naps helped. |

| Same here...5:30am...30 minutes before I have to get up for work. But I use that 30 minutes to give Zack a massage, do potty training and play. I feed him while I'm in the shower, then take him back outside after my shower then we play more. I feel guily leaving him in his pen most of the day so I try to make up for it in the mornings and evenings. I long for those weekend morning when I used to sleep in! Zzzzzzzzzzz

| I feel all of your pain. Coco used to do that at 5am! Then I got earplugs and a bed that had a zipper, so she couldn't get out. A week of ignoring her and now she can sleep as long as 10am! She will hold her potty too. As long as I'm asleep, she's asleep. But when I wake, she wants to be out of her bed. Just ignore it, and practice saying SHHHH!. It really works. Now if she whines I know it's because she can't hold it in anymore, and she has to go potty so I take her, and then we go back to sleep on weekends. She is 4 months. Trust me ignoring them isn't mean, because they need the sleep too. Plus you play better with them when you've gotten enough sleep.

| I, too, am a teacher and have been off for the last 2 weeks. My vet told me to absolutely positively not let her out of her crate all of the hours that I am home during the summer months as it will be painful for her and I when school starts again. It has been hard, but I am trying to keep her in her crate on a consistent basis, this week. Shasta also gets me up at the crack of dawn, when I usually get up for school. I try to ignore her but am a light sleeper so I move her from the living room to the garage where it is dark. It usually works for a couple of more hours, which is plenty of time. I am a first time Yorkie owner, and everyone tells me to just ignore it, which worked to crate train her. I am now in the process of switching her over to a cage, with a divider (to keep a small area until she is potty trained), and am going through the same process I was when I started crate training. Hope any of the suggestions work. Good luck and enjoy your summer! |

| I don't let Maximus take a nap on the weekends I spend the whole day tiring him out so maybe I can get 10 more minutes of sleep..I don't put him to bed till 11 pm and he STILL wakes up at 5:48...it drives me crazy..lol, so know he sleeps in my bed when he wakes up I put him on the floor he goes pee and then back up in the bed and we go back to sleep for an hour or 2..we made a compromise..thats sounds crazy but thats what i feel it was..lol

| Maggie use to get up early, until summer started. She goes to bed at 9PM and gets up at 7:30AM. I do know that about 2 hours before bedtime, we take her outside to play with our bigger dogs and swim in the pool. She is exhausted by the time we come in. You might try something similar.

| Don't let them go to sleep so early Stewie goes to bed between 1030 and 1045 every night (like clockwork). He eats right before bed at around 10PM and doesn't wake up until I do (sometimes as late as noon or 1PM). I have a pee pad in my room that he may jump down to use in the morning, then he crawls right back in with me. I think he sleeps so late for a few reasons. One being that he sleeps with me in my bed, so he's not in his crate worried about what I'm doing or if I'm awake -- he can see that I'm asleep. Second being that he eats later so he doesnt have to wake up as early to pee/poo. Also, I run him around as much as I possibly can and keep him from napping. Hope I helped a little!
