Donating YT 30K Club Member | I feel your pain. Pixie is 18 months, I got her at 13 months not housebroken, and to this day I cannot get her completely trained. She goes on the pads sometimes, outside in the mornings, and wherever she feels like sometimes. I am going to start keeping her in my eyesite whenever possible. I am shampooing my carpets every other week. I honetly think she will never be 100% trained. Good luck

| Well what we did (and still do) may not be very popular but it seems to work for us. Everyone says positive reinforcement is the way to go and I agree with this completely. But Reagan also responds to punishment. I don't beat or even spank or pop her, nor do I even yell at her. She gets time outs. If she pottys on the floor I fiver her a firm "no" then we have like a travel pet crate thingy and she goes in it for a few minutes for a time out. I originally started this more or less for myself. I was getting so frustrated at her when I knew she knew she was supposed to go outside so I would put her in her crate while I was cleaning up the spot. Just a little time out for myself really. Just by chance she really started responding very well to it. She went out almost religously then. Then I backed off of the time outs and low and behold she started going on the floor more often again so we picked back up with the time outs and it solved that. Now she still gets time outs but it is no longer in her crate, but her bed, and they usually aren't for pottying they are more for acting up or something. Like the other day she just would not leave our cat Sophie alone no matter how many times I told her to "leave it" alone. So finally I had had enough and I told her to her spot and she had to stay for about 3-5 minutes. It just gave her time to calm down and forget about the cat. If you do do time outs or something I would still keep up with the positive encouragement and treats and stuff b/c that really does help too.

| MIne came to me supposedly litter trained, also. He was consistent with the box for a few days and then started messing. I decided that the only way we could live together was if he was outside trained. It was September and so I knew that I had about one month of good weather left. I took two weeks off to totally devote to him and never left the house. We went out ev ery hour until he went and then I praised him. Within a couple of days, he understood. He was crated whenever I left him. I set an alarm clock to get up in the middle of the night since he was too tiny to hold it all night long. I was vigilant and consistent. It is tiring and boring, but within 3 weeks I was rewarded with a puppy who knew what was expected of him. He was 2 lbs at that time and when winter hit, I found out that no amount of snow or cold bothered him. We have not had an accident in the house in over 8 months except for once or twice when I ignored his signals. He is now 16 months old and 31/2 lbs. He can hold himself for much longer periods of time and can go all night without being let out. He goes to the door and asks to be let out. He is still confined to the kitchen when we are not home. I am fortunate that I do not work and so he can go out 3-4 times a day, but he is the last in a long line of dogs that I have trained and when I was working, I made sure I took my vacation when we brought the puppies home. The intense and consistent effort plus crating has never failed me. It's tough to give up free time like that, but a reliable well trained dog is worth it. A couple of weeks of sacrifice vs. 12-14 years of accidents ! |

| Pipers a little over 4 years old now, and he too goes through periods of regression, and I go through periods of frustration.
