| New to Yorkies. Hi all, I just signed up today and have been doing nothing but researching these Yorkshire Terriers. Interesting dogs I must say. I just bought this dog this past Sunday for my girlfriend and she has been a handful to say the least. She was born April 28th of this year. I've been reading up a lot on this potting training and all I can say is I know now why my parents would never let me have an inside dog when I was little. Anyways, my front yard consists of a parking lot (I live in town right next to a restaurant) and my backyard you open the door and there's a house. Just enough room to walk (a sidewalk if you will). There is a lawn to the side of the house beside the deck, but I'm not sure how good this will work considering its the neighbor's side yard. So basically it looks like I'm stuck training the thing on pads. The first few days we had her she did good. Praised her and gave her treats for peeing/pooping in the right spot. Now when I take her to the pad, she sniffs, does her little "omg I gotta go" dance, then walks about 6 feet away and goes on the carpet. I immediately put her on the pad and say, "potty." I do this every time I put her on the pad, but no luck. I think I've narrowed it down to 2 spots she likes to pee. I have some cleaner, but you guys seem to like the Nature's Miracle a lot so I may need to buy 34979283 gallons of it and fill my entire apartment with it. So now I'm basically trying to figure out if training on the pad is the best for her or to take her outside. I know I haven't had her for long and I know this is going to take awhile. I'm just trying to not give up on one certain way and try another since that will only confuse her. Well, I know this post was long. I orginally intended to say, "Hi, I am a new owner to a Yorkie and was just wanting to say "hi"." But yea, I started thinking about her and thought I'd share. |

| When you see her move away from the pad to pee, don't let her even start. Pick her up and put her back on the pad. Eventually she will just let it go on the pad. When she does, PRAISE PRAISE PRAISE. It takes a lot of time, so be patient! My little girl started being consistent after a few months, and now at almost 2 years she still has accidents once in awhile, although they are mainly just being ON the pad but her pee just missing the edge of it. Be prepared to spend a lot of time with potty training! Are the pads you're using scented?

| If there's one spot that she usually goes to, you might want to move the pad there. If she keeps going on that spot, praise her for going on the pad. Then if you move the pad, see if she goes to the pad again or just to the same spot. There might still be some scent left in a spot where she's peed before that the cleaner might not get out. A mix of vinegar and water works great for getting the scent out! Good luck!

| Oh, and do you let her have free run of the house? Until she gets a little more consistent, you might want to confine her to one room. I just read back and saw there are two spots where she pees... You can try putting a pad in both of those spots. I find that on carpet the pad makes more of a crinkle sound under their feet, and she may start to associate that sound as the right place to go pee.

| Well I'm out of suggestions, you seem to be doing everything right! Just be persistent and it will come. It may take months, but your little baby will learn!

| Haha thanks. I'm talking to the girlfriend now and apparently our little puppy had an accident in her bed. She said she awoke to the dog whimpering, but by the time she got up the dog was already doing her business. That's a really good sign I think. I can only hope. |

| If she was wimpering she knew it wasn't the right place to go so there's a plus! Does she need to be lifted on and off the bed? I got sick of doing that with Layla when she was little so I made her a little stair to get on and off my bed. I have a very low bed so I just used a small cardboard box covered in a towel for traction, but if it's a higher bed you can either make stairs or even buy a small set of stairs for that purpose. It's also easier on their joints if they're not jumping down from high surfaces.
