It's a Yorkie Thing Donating Member | Very Timid Little Girl Oh guys and gals I need advice.... the little girl, Lacie, that I posted that I brought home last night is very timid. She has been in a kennel for her six months of life, with her brother, who is also very small to play with. I am sure that they took her out to play and groom her. She is not from a puppy mill, just a breeder who use kennels and not in her home. PROBLEM is that she is shy and timed and Gizmo is NOT. He is only 3 months to her 6 months and slightly smaller, but he is well socialized and just has alot of energy. I want them to be together, but will this bring her out of her shell or push her further in? Any advice at all will help. Thanks Dawn

| Dakota was very scared of Aubrey when I brought her home, I would just stay next to both of them and hold her, and let the boy sniff her, this is what I did with Dakota. Now she's starting to run around with Aubrey. Just make sure that he doesn't jump on her. Good luck, and keep me posted on how shes doing! |

| Letting them smell each other is a great idea. Just take it slow, and she'll come around in no time.

It's a Yorkie Thing Donating Member | We have had her now for four days and she is doing better. She still doesn't run around the house on her own. Where ever you put her...she stays... She doesn't even follow me when I leave a room like my Gizmo does and Duke did. I thought that was a triat of YT's? Is it because she has been in the kennel? Thanks everyone for the help.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Pixie was in a run at the Breeders with 2 other dogs for 13 months and she was pretty skittish at first. She would just stiffen up if you tried to pick her up. She finally got better with that after many months. She was fine with my other 2 dogs in a day or so. She will adjust quickly. They just aren't use to such a big world.

| What about putting a leash on her and taking her with you as you go around the house? Maybe that would help her to get used to getting up and about and exploring a little. Carla |

| When a puppy has not been socialized as this little one has not you have to be very patient and go very slow. It takes a little one about 2 weeks before they start feeling safe and comfortable in a new home. She has to learn to trust you and look to you for safety and given time this will happen. Never push them into something they are uncomfortable or you will only drive their fear level up. As she becomes more comfortable then I am sure she will start to follow you and become more relaxed with the other dogs. Just remember her safe level before was in a kennel and this she understands and all of sudden she is put out in a hugh new world without knowing you or the other dogs. It is very scary to her. Do you have a cage in your home that you could leave the door open so that she always has a safe retreat to go to? You don't have to close her in it but she might really like knowing she can go to her safe zone. The biggest advise I can give you is just go slow and remember every dog is different and every dog has their own personality. Patience and love will go a long way in making her feel safe and secure.

It's a Yorkie Thing Donating Member | update on Lacie Lacie is doing a little better. She gets out of her corner now when I am home and plays some. While I'm gone I get the two of them in a safe zone of about 6ft by 10 ft area. gated off from the rest of the house. She does well there. There is a carrier in there with the door open on it. Lacie sleeps on top of it most of the time. Gizmo is everywhere else. My question now is that Gizmo seems to really dominate her alot. Is this normal? He drags her around by her hair when she doesn't play with him. Of course when I'm home I stop it. But what about when I'm gone? Is she in danger? I don't think he hurts her because she doesn't seem to mind. Any advice is great... Thanks Dawn

| That is wonderful and you can see that she is starting to come out of her shell. I am not sure if I would be real concerned about Gizmo playing with her unless I saw how she reacts to him when I was home. Does she get mad? Does she run into her safe haven? Does she tell him off from time to time? Was she with other dogs in the kennel so she is comfortable with him? Most puppies will tolerate a lot from each other and if she is not reacting I think she is fine but you will have to look into her eyes to see if she is frightened by his attention. My gang thinks topknots were created for them to haul each other around . I find even my 3# little girl Bella can take care of herself when she has had enough. Again, all of my dogs were rescue except for one and they have all adjusted to each other given time, patience and love.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Pixie who was my timid one at first beat up Cali who is bigger than her all the time. She pulls her legs out, pushes her up against the wall and grabs her by her topknot. Cali always goes back for more so I figured they are just playing.

| It should help bring her out. Does she have run of the house now, or do you crate too?

It's a Yorkie Thing Donating Member | Well last night was the first time I say Lacie attack Gizmo. She had enough of him pouncing on her and went after him this time. It was wonderful. Niether one is crated but they are in thier "safe area" during times I'm not home. They both run free in the evenings and at night. Thanks everyone for all of your help understanding the behavior. Dawn
