any advice please? needing some advice please. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- hello, im a newbie. am happy that ive found this great forum for all the advice im gonna need. im getting my first 8wk old little darling tomorrow and upon reading some of the threads here i thought some of you more experianced puppy owners could advise me. i am planning to crate train as both myself and my dh work. i have bought a 30x50 metal crate so she,d have plenty room and it would be like her own space. i have put her bed at one side and was going to put newspaper down at the other side for her to learn to go wee wee there , so when we,re at work she is able to go to the toilet there. i dont want to give her run of the house or even a room when she,s unattended but i have read that you should,nt teach her to eliminate in her den. so was wondering what was the best thing to do. any advice would be gratefully received. thanks

Are you planning to house-train your pup to go potty outside or on a wee-wee pad? If you want your pup to go to the bathroom outside then I would not advise you to put newspaper in her crate because then she will think its okay to go to the bathroom where she sleeps. My pup just turned 12 weeks old yesterday and we got her about a week and a half ago and we use a crate that is about 24 x 21 i think and we put down a towel across the bottom of the entire crate and on the other half we put her little bed and a few toys. At night we cover the crate and during the day we leave it uncovered. We also have a water bottle attached to the side, as my boyfriend and I both work 8 hour days and I can't always make it home to let her out in the afternoon. We always take her outside immediately after we take her out of her crate, and she usually goes to the potty right away. We also feed her in the cage about 3 times a day because we have two older yorkies and she finds there food more appealing and also gets very distracted at feeding time. We also make sure to watch her ever second that she is out of the cage and if she looks like she has to go potty (circling around we take her outside immediately) or if we catch in the act we say no-no and take her outside. Also we make sure we always take her outside about 20-30 min. after meals and always before we put her back in her crate. We've had a few accidents in the house but she seems to be doing well with her crate-training. I know a lot of people recommend getting a cage that is only big enough for the puppy to stand and turn around but we already had the cage from our previous yorkies and found that it works great. Hope this was somewhat helpful.

It's not a good idea to have a crate that large for her to sleep and potty in. Her sleeping arrangements should be far from her bed and her food. The crate should only be large enough for her to sleep in, stand up in and turn around. Buy an expen and attach it to the front of the crate so she has room to walk around and play. Put a wee-wee pad at the oposite end and attach the water dish to the pen. Give her a toy and a chewy, like a beef femur bone about 1" thick, cooked and cut off any meat and take out the marrow. It WONT splinter after being cooked. I give my dogs cooked femur and knuckle bones.

we are going to train her to go potty outside but as we live in a flat and dont have our own garden she wont be able to go outside until she has had all her shots. i was going to paper train her in a different part of the house and keep her cage just for sleeping and playing, but am worried how she will be able to go potty when we,re at work as she wont be able to hold it for that long as we work 6hrs. thankyou for your replies. any more advice on this please. thanks

I got Maxwell at 12 weeks old. Maxwell's crate was that size too, so I fixed it so it was just big enough for his bed, food and water. The rule of thumb I followed was he could only "hold it" 1 hour for every month old he was.
