| She has been peeing in her crate! I got Gizmo two weeks ago. She has been having a couple of accidents on the floor while we are playing, but tonight I discovered that she has been peeing on one side of her crate! It is small, but I guess not small enough. Giz is 5 months old. What should I do to crate train better? How often will she have to go out when she is older? My older dog only goes out twice a day. Thanks... Jackie |

| her crate is definitly not small enough... she should only be able to turn around and lay down... because then she will NOT want to pee.. and make sure she is close enough to you that she can wake up you to let you know she has to pee. ... when she cries.. take her out... 5 min tops.... she will probably pee ... then right back in bed.... i'd say... any time now she will be sleeping through the night.... layla didn't take long... accidents in the house are normal.. until she gets it down.. and you've only had her for a few weeks.... so make the crate smaller.. we used towels... and make sure you can hear her cry at night ... it will get better |

| Hello! First off, welcome to YT! And congrats on your new puppy I do think you should make her crate smaller. Using towels was a great suggestion. Just pile them up and kinda make a wall near the back of the crate. What I've done to crate train Luigi (he is 3 months) is to set alarm every once in awhile so I can get up to let him out at night. When I first got him, I was up like every hour just to make sure. Yes, there'll be a few accidents around the house, but it does get better. Now he can hold it much longer, up to 4-5 hours. I haven't tried yet to see if he can sleep through the night. Whenever I do take him out of his crate, I just take him straight to the potty pads. I don't really talk to him or cuddle with him at this time. It's late in the night and I dont want him to think it's playtime. After I bring him to the pads, I say "Go potty" as a command. Then, I praise him when he goes and put him back in his crate ("Go bedtime") to sleep. These commands can be helpful. Sometimes, I can just snap my finger after taking him out the crate and tell him "go potty" and he'll go. No worries, I think you just need to make your crate a little smaller. And be consistent and I'm sure he'll get better with potty training. Also, to avoid having accidents around the house, anytime I take Luigi out to play or whatever, I make sure to keep a close eye on him at all times. if I can't do this, then he stays in his crate or in his pen (where he has access to his pads). In order to have him follow me (and so I can keep a close eye), I either play with him constantly or put him on a leash and tie the leash to my belt loop (never tug though!) This makes it so that he learns to follow me and is with me at all times if he's out of the crate/pen. He's still too young to be trusted for full run of the house, so that's why I watch him a lot so we can avoid accidents. Sure, sometimes it happens, but just be consistent with your praises and occasional "NO!"s and your puppy will start to get it too. You can start picking up on your puppy's signs that he needs to go too (mine starts sniffing around in circles). When I see this, I take him straight to his pads and say "go potty." Hope this helps. Good luck!

| Molly did this too. Making the crate smaller didn't help her, but that seems to be the right first step. Molly has hopefully outgrown it now as she's had several dry nights. I got to where I cut up old towels and put in there for her to sleep on, as they were easier to wash every night than a blankie. I also cleaned it with neutralizer after every accident. I know how frustrating it is...good luck!! |

| The question really isn't how often she'll have to go out when she's older, but how often she has to go out NOW. During the day, she may well need to potty every hour. If she isn't let out of her crate that often, it doesn't matter how small the crate is, she'll have no choice but to pee in it! The other factor to take into consideration here is what were her living conditions before she came to you. If she was kept crated for extended periods of time, she has had to over-ride her natural instinct to keep her "den" clean. In that case, crate-training may be considerably more difficult. Good luck to you and Gizmo!

| needing some advice please. hello, im a newbie. am happy that ive found this great forum for all the advice im gonna need. im getting my first 8wk old little darling tomorrow and upon reading some of the threads here i thought some of you more experianced puppy owners could advise me. i am planning to crate train as both myself and my dh work. i have bought a 30x50 metal crate so she,d have plenty room and it would be like her own space. i have put her bed at one side and was going to pup newspaper down at the other side for her to learn to go wee wee there , so when we,re at work she is able to go to the toilet there. i dont want to give her run of the house or even a room when she,s unattended but i have read that you should,nt teach her to eliminate in her den. so was wondering what was the best thing to do. any advice would be gratefully received. thanks |

Is there a small space you can close off for your puppy so that she doesn't have to stay in her crate and go potty in her actual den area? For instance, I've closed off a small part of my kitchen, just by using a baby gate. I put Luigi's crate there, his food&water bowl next to it, and his weewee pads a bit farther away, but still in the area. His crate is only big enough to allow him to get up and turn around..so he never pees in there. I let him out periodically to go on the weewee pads or to play. If I'm not able to watch him, then he stays in his pen or his crate (like I said previously in my reply above). He never gets full run of the house, unless I'm watching him like a hawk or he's on a leash and tied to me So maybe you can try closing off a certain section in your house? Hope this help a little. Best of luck with your new yorkie!
