| runs out the door into traffic!!! my do keeps trying to run out the door. every time a delivery man comes( yeah, i know what u'll say, but quitting pizza isn't the answer!!! anyway, he just runs out. if a door is left open or if he is not on the leash or somehow gets out that's it. he just runs and runs and the more i chase him the faster he runs, and if I don't chase him he still runs! i am terrified that he will get hit by a car (we live in a busy area). has anyone had this happen and what can i do to fix this? |

| In the long run, your pup really needs to learn "come" and "sit/stay". Those will solve the problem. In the meantime, you're going to need to use management to keep him from being able to practice undesirable (and possibly deadly) behavior. Perhaps you can put a gate inside the house so that he is blocked from the door at all times. Or, you can put a baby gate across the front door itself. Not the look you're hoping to achieve, I know, but you gotta keep your pup safe. Having him drag around a leash at all times is another possibility. Probably won't keep him inside, but it would help make him easier to catch if he does get out.

| Lacy used to be aweful about trying to run out the front door when opened. I always picked her up anytime I had to open the door. She knows now that she's not supposed to go out there..but I'm still real careful with her. I wouldn't just leave the door wide open or anything like that. I think it's just going to take some time and training to keep your baby from that. But I would definitely pick him up when you answer the door or have a gate or something. Running into traffic is so dangerous and he could get ran over

| I started a thread on this exact same thing when I first got Mugzy. After different suggestions, I immediately got a BABY GATE for the front door. I can't trust my kids, and Mugzy's still too little to be reliable, so I feel alot safer. He has also tried to run out our deck door (that leads to the street also), buuuuuuttttttt, I squirted him with the hose (I was watering plants at the time) and now he's very leery of coming near that door |

| So, I would keep a squirt gun by your front door, and if he goes too close to the door, I'd say "EH, EH" or "GET BACK" or something along that line, at the same time that you squirt him. |

| Even if they are trained to "come" "stay" and all, they can go brain dead when they hear that wonderful UPS truck and give chase. I just put an expen around the front door. No worries when the door is opened. |
