Train in Crate or playpen??? We just brought our baby home yesterday and we are so unsure about training him. My husband wants to crate train and I want to playpen train so he can have access to everything he needs....anyone have any suggestions on what works better??? Or can I start with the playpen and move to the crate as he gets older?? I am a first time yorkie owner and I need alll the help I can get...thanks Last edited by MarleysMom; 06-02-2007 at 09:05 AM.

to yt, is nice to have you here, my baby girl is one year old and 100% potty train, I use the playpen in the day, when she was out of my eyesight and at night in the crate on top of my treasure chest next to my bed , but I will take her out at night(play pen- pee-pads) when she need it to go to potty

Hates the Crate.... Marley doesn't seem to like the crate at all. We had him in there the first night and all he did was cry in our bedroom so we tried it in another room and still no luck!! I just dont want to start any bad habits!! Should we not be playing with him as much during the day and keep him in the playpen???

My babies slept with me from day 1 at night but that was just our choice...when they were in the crate it was when we went out for a couple hours..if they did cry we werent there to hear it. I think when we hear them crying our instinct is to remove them from the crate to hush them...but that can be the worse thing you can do as that shows them "hey I cry I get to get out" maybe try going out of the house for an hour with him crated...that way you dont have to listen to the crying and feel sorry for him. I hope this doesnt sound mean but it works for us. We have a new Shih Tzu puppy and she cries to go in the crate too but she knows she wont get out if she cries so the crying doesnt last long anymore...she is 10 weeks old right now. Of course they all sleep with us at night so thats a big bonus as we dont have to try and sleep and listen to the crying... Dawn

Gotta get the spray?? I hear everyone talking about the spray for the pads that magically attracts them to it. Is it really worth it?? I feel that I leave Marley too much in his playpen b/c i dont want any accidents on my wood floors!! I guess I am learning it all right now and youd think if I could raise 2 boys then I would be grea that this....guess again...any more info????

YT 500 Club Member | Our puppy cried terribly the first night, and my husband slept with his fingers through the gate (of the crate) all night. After a couple nights, she was fine. Of course your dog will cry the first night. He misses his mother and sibs. It takes a little while for them to get used to being alone. Ours slept in her crate for nearly two years, but once we knew she was well trained, she has been in our bed ever since. Unfortunately we have nights like last night when she threw up on the quilt in the middle of the night and got up later to go out, (Boy am I tired today!) but crate training works. I have not used a playpen with mine. I tried it with a bigger puppy once and came home to find her running around the house. She had chewed the netting!
