| Apartment living and potty issues with yorkies If you live in an apartment and work 8 hours outside the home, how do you deal with the potty situation? Do you use pee pads or litter boxes? Do you come home during lunch to walk your dog? I am getting my dog in two weeks and I am a bit overwhelmed with this problem. Any help... |

| We have the next door neighbor's daugher come over after she gets home from school and walk him. This was only after he was a year old -before that my daughter came and got him. So in answer to your question-yes I would come home at lunch time and let your baby out. |

YT 500 Club Member | I currently live in a house.. with my parents as my boyfriend and I are both full time students and cannot afford to move out.. but we are getting a condo Jan 08 so I am training Armani on the pads and outside.. so that way he wont freak when we move somewhere without a yard. Currently though he prefers the pads and only playing outside

| Hey, I live in an apartment (so no backyard ), but I rarely work more than a few hours a day outside my apt, so I don't have those issues, but I guess I would recommend piddle pads for sure. That seems like too long to make them wait. I don't have a whole lot of suggestions about being gone for 8 hours, but I'm sure others will..... Good luck with your puppy (and post some pics when you get him/her)

| I keep mine in an x-pen with potty pads. I do come home at lunch to feed them a snack and play for an hour.

| i live in a 3rd floor apartment so no backyard here either but he's trained on the pee pads as well i leave the pee pad on the bathroom floor since it's tiles i rather him make his mes in there than on the wood floor he's 1yr and 2months so we have a little hallway in front of the bathroom which is good enough space for him but now that he's been good i now leave our bedroom door open so that he has more space to run around i leave him like 5 toys and enough water and food unfortunaltley i cant go home for lunch nor do i have anyone to walk him but he's good he just get's super excited when i get home and we are also gone for 8hrs so dont worry i did how ever take a few days off when i first got him

| but if he uses the pads while you're gone, does he go outside when you're there or do you expect him to also use the pads then?

| When Dobby is home all day we leave a potty pad by the back door. When we are home he uses a potty pad on the back porch (2nd floor apartment so no yard). He's learned to paw at the door, and we let him out to do his potty on the pee-pad out there. I also try to come home at lunch, or take him to my mom's so he can play outside! Good luck.

| I have never used a pee pad however Buddy was 14wks when I brought him home and has been trained to potty outdoors only. I went home from work everyday for six weeks. I work 8hrs a day and gone for 9hrs. Left him in his crate, went home at 12:00 let him out, out again at 5:30, 7:00 after dinner, 9:30 and in crate for night. No accidents out again at 6:00am, breakfast out again at 8:00am off to work and home at 12:00. He never had an accident in the create however if out of create I made sure he went out every two hours or before if I saw him drink water. He had a couple accidents but soon caught on. No water in the create or you will never train him. By 5mos he was completely trained. Then out of the create, gate up in kitchen . By 5 or 6 months they have control over their bladder and can then hold it much longer. Vet told me I made Buddy have an iron bladder by training him that way. Because at times he had to hold it. Good luck stay persistant, persistance is what does it. You can't do it one day and not the next. They are very smart and catch on fast. |

6-8. He cried while I got ready for work, was stressful but I had to keep him confined. I let him have free roam at night after his 5:30 and kept a watchful eye, when I would see him circle I ran grabbed him and out we went. I was up and down those steps, live on the second floor, for weeks. But I only wanted him to potty outdoors. That is what I am use too. All my dogs went outdoors. OH and a helpful hint from my daughter's trainer, each and every time he potty's outside give him a piece of liverwurst, very tiny piece and they love it. It has to be something they never get indoors. WHen he was trained I stopped it. Just very small pieces to give them the flavor and they want it they get used to looking for it and want to go outdoors. Good luck, persistance is key. | |
