is this good for the puppy? This is long and I apologize, I hope someone can give me some advice My boyfriend just recently bought me my first yorkie. She is a doll and I love her to death. Her name is Lily. We both still live with our parents but Lily lives with me. So far, her training has gone extremely well. I am crate training her and taking her outside very often. In the beginning, she only had accidents in her crate at night. Starting with the second day we had her, my boyfriend began taking her around 5 o'clock to his house. She is taken out frequently. She gets more attention from his mom when she is there rather than her 'daddy'. His mom is also trying to train her to not leave the yard and things like that. He has been taking her there for the past week and then bringing her to my house around 9pm. My concern is that Lily will get confused from being trained at two different houses by two different people. She has been having accidents in my house in the past few days and I believe that it is occuring because of the frequent change of environment. I feel like the hard work I am putting in is being cancelled by my boyfriend's mom trying to train Lily at her house. I feel like Lily wont understand that I am her 'mommy' and that she will grow more accustomed to her 'other mommmy'. By all means, I am not trying to 'hog' Lily or get jealous. I am just concerned because the first weeks are the most crucial in training and establishing comfort. Do you think this is good for my puppy? -Tori

I believe your instincts are correct. He bought the dog for you not his mom. The baby should be trained by you and whomever you designate to help you as long as they follow your guidelines or instruction. Take control of your baby. That my 2 cents worth of advice.

Thanks for your response. I am trying to get him to understand but he is insisitng that I am crazy. At least I am not the only one who thinks it won't be good for her.

I think you're right. I'm sure Lily is getting confused. In the first few months, it's important that the puppy knows where she should go. She's just a baby, she doesn't know any better.

Consistency is the key to training. My husband was home more often when we got our yorkie a few days before christmas, so he became the trainer, he learned to trust him and listen to him, so I credit my husband with Vinnie's potty training success, don't get me wrong, we still have the occasional accident, but overall, he's got it at 6 months and we're very proud. Now he runs to his daddy whenever he uses the pad, or sometimes goes to get his daddy so he'll go to the pad with him. I've even read that as a couple you should choose one person to be the trainer, and it worked for us. It is your dog, not his mom's, i agree with that, you don't want to end up with his mom earning the trust and respect first!
