| Behavior Change after neutering Has anyone experienced any behavior changes in their puppies after being neutered? Izzy was neutered almost two weeks ago and ever since then he's been....well let me put it bluntly....ANNOYING! He tries to pee and poop in other areas of the house and is constantly sniffing like he is looking for something. I used to let him have the run of the house and didnt have too many problems. Now I have to follow him like I did when he came home. The whining has increased...he's always been a whiner anyway but he does it more. For example, in the morning I usually let him out of his crate to go to the bathroom, then after that I put him back so I can take a shower.(my bathroom and bedroom are right next to each other) He will stay in there until I get dressed. I let him out again to eat breakfast. Now I've been doing this since I brought him home. It works out for me especially on work days because I dont have time to chase and worry about what he is doing. At first he cried but he got used to it. Now its like I just brought him home. He cries and whines until I get dressed. Its off and on but very annoying...especially at 7am! I feel like Im having flashbacks...Im sure its something Im NOT doing...that is what the experts say. A dogs behavior is usually caused by the owner. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

| I am bumping this for you, sorry I don't have any idea about the change for him. I had my pup neutered about 1.5 weeks ago, and he was YES ANNOYING for ONE day, and I felt we were back to when he came home.....he was naughty, and grabbed things and ran with them when he knows he shouldn't have, but it just lasted the one day. Are you ignoring his whining? That may help....maybe you just have to do what you did from the beginning, ignore and it will subside?? Good luck!! |

| Things should die down in a couple of weeks. I have heard several people who got their males dogs neutered and for a few weeks they had bad behaviors that they have never done before such as marking, humping, whining, etc. But after a few weeks or a month, things are back to normal. It is just their hormones trying to adjust to the new change.

| I agree with what Trixie said. Both my males settled down a couple of weeks after neutering. In the meantime, I would increase his exercise. Possibly a walk in the morning or evening to tire him out. It does get better!

| Thanks for the advice everyone. I didnt realize that it could be his hormones...I myself get a little out of wack once a month..LOL Good news is, he has calmed down a little within the last couple of days...so hopefully it will get better. I am going to increase his exercise. I know he is worked up when I come home because Im gone all day. It's just been so darn cold here I hate to go out. I think it is supposed to be warmer this weekend, so I will see.

2 things keep him away from me for a few mins... 1 shutting the door on him for 5 mins (but he just cries & paws it until I open it again) and 2 asking him if he wants a bath!!! He runs to his bed and lays there when I ask that! (which is funny bc he only gets baths at the groomers now, not even by me anymore unless hes disgusting like after a muddy walk outside) Good Luck! My boy has been 'fixed' for over a year now and he has not reverted back to his old self! | |

| Dougal was pretty upset when he lost his two favourite things in the world to lick! I think surgery can be pretty hard on them - cos you can't explain it to them. Hopefully he'll come right - sounds like he might just have been a little put out by the whole scary process. perhaps for the whining Just use lots of positive re-inforcement when you get the behaviour you want. IE if he's in the crate and doesn't whine - even if it's just a short time PRAISE praise praise - just verbal and look at him - then he knows what the right behaviour is. I had Dougal tied out today while I was putting agility equipment away at the club and at one point he got quite upset so I turned my head and shoulders directly away from him then the moment he stopped barking I turned back and said "good boy, Dougal" after a while he calmed right down and it was just a matter of remembering every 5 mins or so if he was quiet to call out his name and "good boy". (that last bit is the bit I forget til he starts barking LOL! - he's quite good really!) Hope that helps!

| OMG, i'm so glad i found this thread. Cody got neutered about a week ago, and he was doing fine, i thought he calmed down a little but last night he went MAD, he was barking until 2 am and didn't want to go to sleep, mind you he was always an energertic little guy, i take him out after work for 30 min and another 30 min in the evening and he gets to run up and down my hall way...to get it all out. i'm glad to read that it is a phase, i didn't think it would be a hormonal thing also, so i'll be patient and hopefully the evenings will get better |

Since I posted this thread, he's been much better. He was actually a sweetheart this past weekend...so he's back to his normal self. When he sat on my lap and slept while I watched a movie twice this weekend I knew my Izzy was back to normal
