| Pottytraining question-Will this work with Yorkies? My lil furbaby is coming home to me on Friday 13th and I want to have my housebreaking plan all thought out and planned so he can be successful. With my shihzu and maltese I would have them sleep with me at night and if they wiggled that usually meant they needed to 'go'. I was planning on doing this with our puppy at night and than crating him during the day for the couple of hours that I go to the office- that should help strengthen his bladder. The breeder has him paper trained right now and I want him to use the Petapotty on the balcony. I was planning to have newspapers by the patio door and gradually move them outside to the spot where I will put the potty. then when he gets big enough to get on the potty put the newspaper on top untill he gets the picture. Will this all work with a Yorkie? Or should I crate him the entire night- or not crate at all? |

| I would suggest definitely crate train him. I got some ideas from here and they are working for me. I read in a book that they like to have like their own little private place to go rest. I've heard a lot of people suggest an X pen with the crate in there during the day. You'd also leave their food and water there. I was nervous at the beginning too. I don't know if I was lucky, but Holly sleeps all night in her crate. During the day, she is with us or in the kitchen (which is penned off with gates. She goes to her pad all the time now. But it took a lot of jumping up and down and celebration when she went. She goes to the bathroom right before bed and then as soon as she wakes up. I think if you should crate him at first and then use your judgement and see if he'll do okay sleeping with you. Let me know how it goes. I'm not an expert as I just got my baby too. This is my experience. Hope it helps at least a little.

| i suggest crate training, i TRIED but i was bad and let kikko sleep with me and once you let them on the bed, there's no turning back. I do the 'if they wiggle, they need to potty' method, it has worked so far for me .. expect i have to let him go potty at least 2 times in the night .. kind of sucks b/c i have a hard time falling back asleep. but if you are willing and not going to crate train go for it.

I basically wanted to let him sleep with me during the night. Then when I need to go in to the office to work I would crate him then since he would be at home alone for a couple of hours. I go to work at 11:00am and come home around 3:00pm and sometimes I have to go back but then my downstairs neighbor is going to take care of him. So for about 4 hours he would be crated. I was hoping this would help build his bladder control for the future. Is this all a good idea? | |

| We let our little girl sleep with us the first month or two that we had her and she actually only got up once around 4:00 a.m. to go pee at night. We had no problem putting her in her crate to sleep when she got too heavy and would not let us move around in bed without whimpering and waking us up. We put her in her crate next to our bed and gave her a little Rescue Remedy for a couple of nights and after that she was used to it. She'd scratch the inside a little like she's digging for a minute and we'd tell her to be quiet and she settles right down. So it isn't really a problem, at least it wasn't in our case. |

| well every dog is different during training, but if its what you want to do i suggest doing it, esp. since you've had success with your other dogs pretty much, the second i feel him move (he also wears a little bell so that wakes me up), i jump out of bed and wait with him on the potty pad. i've been able to get down how many times he needs to pee with restricting his water at night. i love having my little guy sleep with me so i don't mind getting up either. its worked for me SO FAR! hahaha, and hopefully it will stay that way (he's only 6 months). we did have one set back though, one weekend i was babysitting my parents yorkie, who they don't let sleep with them, but i felt bad b/c i left kikko sleep with me and not him. so i let him too .. bad idea! he peed on my bed! and then kikko did the same thing the next day on the same spot!! ... so my solution was to clean the mattress but also switch mattresses with my sister's bed (she's never home) ... b/c i know that no matter how hard i'd clean he'd still be able to smell the scent. goodluck with your training! keep us posted! and post some pics whenever you have some! would love to see the puppy!

| Bach's Rescue Remedy is made of natural flower essences. It can also be used for people. It's used to calm them down a little in stressful situations. You can find it at stores like Sprouts, Wild Oats, etc. A website says this for some of its uses "Taking a driving test, exam nerves, speaking in public, after an accident or an argument - there are countless uses for Rescue Remedy."

| Would anyone care to explain exactly what the "crate training" procedure is. As I understand it, you aren't to use it to imprison your dog, but you keep him in there until he goes outside or on the pad and then you allow them freedom, but for how long? Do you give them 15 minutes of freedom and then back to the crate for the next hour until they have to pee again? I can't see keeping a dog that needs some exercise and outlet for a tremendous amount of energy, as well as some time to experience the world in order to develop, in a crate for hours on end for months. To me, that's tantamount to keep a child penned up in a playpen 24/7. It impedes development. So I'd like to know exactly how it is supposed to work. |

| I didn't exactly what your saying and ot worked. From the day I got her she slept with me,she wakes up and whines cause she can't jump from the bed. When I heard that, I took her outside and she went pee. Then i would give her a treat. Now she doesn't wake up. SHe waits until I wake up in the morning and I take her outside. During the day I use a baby instead of a crate. I leave enough room for her bed and food. The only problem is now she refuses to go in a crate. She whines if i put her in one. |
