| shock collars! Okay, now I used the search button and looked at everyone's opinions on shock collars, but please listen to my problem. We live in a normal subdivision with many different dogs (big outside dogs) and light traffic. On a couple of occasions Irie has gotten out of the door with no leash on and she just takes off like a bolt of lightning. It is sooooo hard to catch her. My wife and I both chasing her takes a good 5 minutes to get her. On one occasion a car was coming down the road so I had to jump in the street to stop the car incase she decided to go into the street at the wrong time and just yesterday she took off and got waaaayyy to close to a BIG dog. He was behind the fence but she kept going over to it and barking, making the dog real mad. There was a small hole in the fence I was terrified that she was going to slip under and be a snack to the BIG dog. Please, please please help me out. My yorkie has such a strong terrier personality and she doesn't listen to us if she doesn't want to. Our little baby is around 8 months old. I know most everyone is against the collars but I would rather someone say I was cruel than have my dog killed by another dog or ran over. I am open for any and all suggestions. Thanks Everyone

| What kind of shock collar are you thinking about. The only ones I have seen are for barking and electric fencing. If electric fencing is what you are considering I dont think it is cruel and it is a necessity for some people. There was a housing addition we were considering moving into and they dont let you have fences so that would be are only option

| No at one time we were considering moving into a housing addition that didnt let you have fencing so I looked into the invisible fencing. I dont need it where I live now because I have fencing in My front yard and back yard.

| Invisible fencing won't stop something from coming into your yard and killing your dog. The dog, although you have taught it where the perimeters are, won't know what is causing the shock and can be frightened of what it thinks causes the shock. I would never recommend a shock collar for a yorkie or any dog for any reason for that matter. In my contract, if any of my puppy buyers/dog owners use such a thing, I seize the dog back. If the problem is the dog getting out through the door, fix that problem to prevent it getting out. You can either crate it before opening a door or put the dog behind a closed room door. If you can't have a fence even a small one, where you live or are going to move to, don't move there, there are many options for homes that is much more dog friendly. |

| I have a shock collar for Cody. I have only used it when necessary. He had a bad problem of darting out into the street when anyone started out of the back yard. It works! My vet was completely against them until he finally ran across a stuborn dog and he couldn't train him. He tried it and is now a firm believer. NEVER use it to be mean or punish. Use it only to train him/her not to do something. That being said my Cody is 15# so he is not a tiny yorkie. I never had to shock him on anything higher than 3. Of course I did it to myself so I knew what it felt like. You start at 1 and then go up if you need to. Sometimes their hair is so thick they can't feel it. It is just a small jolt. Makes them think....don't do that again.

| OH also I have used the fence as well. These work great too if you follow all instructions. Don't forget to take them "through" the electric fence at the same place that way they know where the can and can not enter. I know that doesn't make much sense but if you get one you will know what I mean.

| I use a baby gate at my door. works wonders for us here. we practiced the stay command while using the gate. if i am just walking out to check the mail box or go to the car, what ever... i say 'stay' and they now stay. if there is anyone at the door , i make them wait until i place the gate there. if they need to enter the house( such as today.. a repair man came to the door), i made him wait until i gated them in the kitchen area.

| Have you tried a training class? Maybe you little guy just needs to really learn some commands? Also, do you go out for walks on a leash? If so, never let him leave the house first. Always make him stay and follow you out.

| I'd check to see if you can get a collar for a cat or very small dog with the system. It does keep my baby sisters dogs in the yard now. But hers are largrer dogs. At one point, me and her were putting concrete in every hole they dug to get out of....once a day! One did the digging, then the other 2 would follow her. So I do understand the need of keeping them at home, when nothing else works. The system she has, came with flags. She set the flags up a few feet in from the system itself. Also when they start getting too close, it will beep. Her dogs learned to back up fast when they heard the beep, and stay behind the flags. They haven't been out of the yard since she got the system. They don't even look like they are trying to get out of the yard. It only takes a few times of getting shocked and they learn. Good luck with whatever you do. I know the problems my baby sis had for months, so I do understand the need for something like that. |

| You could do a baby gate at the door or buy one of those (arrrg, I can't remember what they are called.) I ran accross them on Ebay. It is a little unit that you can set for a certain distance from I think 2 feet to 20 feet and it makes a sound that only the dogs can hear in that radius and they won't go there. I thought about getting one to put near our door to train them to stay away from the door. Kim

| I really don't understand HOW you are planning to use a shock collar. Could you maybe explain that a little more? You definitely need to teach your dog basic commands like come, sit, and stay. It's the only way to keep your little one safe. Even if you went with an electric fence (or whatever it is you plan to do with a shock collar), there can still be dangers in your own yard that you need to call your pup away from. As was said, electric fences don't keep other dogs out. IMHO, taking classes is the most fun way to train your dog. In the meantime, here are a few ideas. Hopefully, one will help! 1) Keep your dog baby-gated away from the front door OR 2) Never open the front door until you pick up your dog (or shut her into another room) OR 3) Put a baby gate across the front door - on the outside - so that it is always there and pup can't get out OR 4). Keep a leash on pup so that you can grab it before opening the door.
