Piddle Pad training for a dog that doesnt recognize his own smell So we got a teacup yorkie. He will only be 3.5 lbs fully grown. Hence the reason we are trying to Piddle pad train him. Its too cold for him to go outside here in snowy old Canada. So hes 4 months old, weve had him 1 week exactly. We have the pee pads set up, 4 of them together. Newspapers dont work cuz he eats them. He pees, we say no, take him to the pee pad. But seems he thinks its a soft place to play with his toys. He doesnt recognize his own smell even. Well put his pee on the pad, NOTHING...where he pees, well not wipe it up, he doesnt return to smell OR pee there again. VERY STRANGE. He can smell cuz he knows his food through wrappers. We've bought that spray stuff for his pee pads...nothing again, the smell doesnt phase him. There arent even signs as to when he needs to go. Anyone offer help please. Ive read the other threads created, and NONE seem to have anything helpful becasue he CANT SEEM TO SMELL HIS OWN SCENT SO FAR. Thanks all

We live in cwntral NY and have had hundreds of inches of snow this year(like every year). He can go outside, if that is your preference. Our puppy is 10 months old and we got him at 5 months. He is 31/2 lbs now and went outside all winter in the snow and subzero. It can be done.

piddle pads armygirl65 what I did to train my pup was the dog litter box and I used newspaper sure he tried at first to tear and eat it but you continue to take it out of his mouth and say no.continue to put him back in the box when he tries to get out.take him in the area you eventually want him to go in. do not stray from that area take him obout 20minutes after eating every time he eats. matbe longer or shorter time depends or your pups bladder and wait him out till he goes then lots of kisses and hugs and maybe a treat.sticking with the same routine works

jj1720 how in the world were you able to do that?my boy is only 7mths and 3lbs and I definately can't get him outside he shakes and shivers something awful. Did your boy shake?did he wear a coat and boots? I am curious as I am going to train my boy to go out in the summer but have never heard of them going out in winter and being so small.

I got him in October just as the weaher was changing. He was litter trained by the breeder and I just couldn't do it. He is by far the smallest dog I've ever owned but all have been outside trained. i took him out every hour for a few muinutes and eventually he went. Lots of praise and treats. I crated him at night or whenever I had to leave the house and set the alarm in the middle of the night for the first few months to take him out. I use the word"potty' constantly so he associated it with eliminating. When the weather got bad, I was surprised that he never shivered. In fact, every time the door opens, he's out there! He has learned to go within 1-3 minutes after I say "potty" Even though I shovel for him, he loves the snow and never shivers outside. He does run to the heat register to dry off when he comes in. Its funny to watch his hair blow up as he dries. I'm lazy so putting on coats evey hour was too much. I went out coatless too, since I figured if he could handle it so could I. We have both survived

One week is not enough time to teach him anything. It tsakes time, lots of time and even more patience. Some take longer than others. When I trained mine to pads. I put the pads where they wanted to go. Then gradually eliminated pads and moved them closer together till we were finally down to one. Keep him confined to small areas, put him in the crate when you can't be watching him, and when he sleeps. When he gets up take him to the pad immediately. You can put one in an under the bed storage box to help define the boundries. good luck and have patience

So i think we will section him off to one room in the house and try that(dining room, not too much to sestroy)...well put 2-4 piddle pads down, spray them(even though this isnt working, but what the heck) and hope that in that small room theres less area, THEN well open it up to another room, and finally the whole bottom floor. We've tried the outdoors thing and he runs back in shivering...takes his quite some time to warm up, so thats out of the question. Hard thing is knowing when he has to go...we've pretty much got the poo thing down, but not the pee time. We've tried to put him on a routine for eating...a handful inthe am, handful at night, and leave the water out all day, but hell get a sip here and there, when he remembers...he doenst eat large quantities...more like 10-15 small portions/day. Not sure if we can change that? What do you all think?

So now that Gizmo's been confined to only 1 room in the house(dining room), hes basically picked his spot to do his duties. Of course its the mat int he front hall right at the front door, haha. Couldnt be on the tile in the bathroom or the hardwood floor, had to be the most inconvenient spot. Well maybe hes understanding the concept of doing it on a mat of some sort, but wrong type and colour, haha. So we put down the pee pads right at the front door, yes looks funny and we have to walk over them, but hes getting the idea... Do you think we should keep this up and gradually move them to where we want them once he understands. He did shred one today which hes never done before, so maybe he knows that were covering his mat where hes picked to do his duty, could he be that smart, lol?

Progress, YEAH So it seems that we are FINALLY making progress. Our Gizmo is a smart cookie i tell you. So he seems to be going on his pad occasionally. He certanly knows right from wrong, and if he does it wrong its cuz were not paying attention to him. The days we play with him the majority of the day hell go on his pad...but the days that were cleaning, or out of the house for a while, even when we return, its his way of saying..."hey over here, pay attention to me" he acts like he FORGETS where to pee....lol So at least were making progress, thanks guys for all of your advice!!!

Hi...Just wondering how Gizmo is not doing with the piddle pads. We have a 6 mon yorkie, Leia, who we are trying to train to go on the pad. She seems to go on the pad well for pee, but she won't poop on it for anything. Also, she does what you mentioned earlier,,,,,if we are gone for some time....she will pee whereever like to get our attention. Does Gizmo still do that??
