| Almost 2yrs old and pee pee problems... Hi Everyone, Finally decided to sign up for the forum, as I think both myself and my Gf need help with our Yorkie Tiger. Long story short, on March 1st, Tiger will be 2 years old. We have had him trained to go on wee wee pads at home, when unable to go outside. He stays home all day in his spacious crate, while my gf and I are at work. He is totally fine when alone at home (in his crate), he will go number 1 and number 2 on the wee wee pad, hence when we come home, and open the crate, thats when the mess begins. His bathroom schedule is walk in the morning (before our work), and after. He will do pee pee outside when he pleases, and occasional number 2. Else everything is at home when staying alone. The true problem lays whenever its super cold, and or when it snows\rains. He won't go outside, and misses at home when we are around. When I say misses, I mean he pees all over. 99% time he will pee all over the floor at home, when we are around, but ironically he will do number 2 on the wee wee pad. Not sure how else we can train him, but we are slowly loosing control with our little baby. Yes he is of course spoiled. Please help with some suggestions on how to once again make him go pee pee on the wee wee pads when were home, and unable to take him out. |

Luvs Lulu Donating Member | Lex is now 15 months old and is I would dare say 100% trained (knock on wood). I had a bit of a problem with him sneaking to the basement and marking on the support poles down there but it has stopped. I feed Lex on a schedule. I get up at six and take him out immediately and he goes pee and poop. Then I bring him and Lulu back inside and put down their food and water. They eat and drink and a few minutes before I leave for work around seven I walk them again. I pick up the food and water then. This works with Lulu as well and she is a baby. Then at some point between 10-2 I have my husband give Lulu some snack so her sugar doesn't drop. She tends to only eat when Lex eats anyhow so it makes no sense for me to leave food down. When my kids get home from school at 2:30 they take them both out to do their business. Then when they come inside they put down food and water and take it up in a half an hour. Then I get home at 5:15 and walk them both immediately and they handle all their business. I do leave not him...he seems offended at it. Then when I bring them back inside I put down their food and water and it comes back up by around 8 or so. I walk them in between and up right until I am ready to go to bed. So it has worked for me the scheduled feeding in the house training. My dogs go out in the rain/snow or whatever is going on out there. If the weather is bad they go faster and don't linger. Soon I will move to elimiate Lulu's pee pad as well. I think maybe you need to do a super clean up of your floors. I use vinegar and water 50/50 mix to clean. It stinks at first but the smell goes away fast and then I can remop with a regular cleaner for freshness plus if you have hardwood floors it's gentle on it. I would have to say that you might want to try the scheduled feeding and do your best to get him on a schedule and eliminate the pads. I think that once you have one down they get used to just continuing to go in the house and never want to stop. I know that toy dogs are notorious for being hard to house break but honestly at two that is a bit long for that one. Is he neutered? Sometimes the peeing indoors is about marking. Lex was doing a lot of that marking in my basement on the pillars before I got him neutered. I had hoped to keep him intact but I figured I try that when I couldn't get him to stop the marking in the basement. It seems like it has worked. Good luck I know how frustrating it can be. What part of queens are you in? I live in Glendale.

| Thanks for the nice write up. Yes I agree that 2 years old is a bit too much, and he should be broken in 100%. To be honest with you, we only have issues when we are home and he is running around (outside his crate). And it also only happens with pee pee. His crate is fully open and accessible so he goes in to do number 2 when needed. I think both my GF and I are guilty of getting lazy on walking him, especially when the weather is lousy. When I take him in the morning (usually around 7am before work), he will pee pee and or does number 2, and we don't have accidents at home. Also after work at around 5 30pm, his wee wee pad will be marked, and if I take him out, he will pee pee. Else he will do it on the wrong place if not walked. So I truly truly believe the issue is more on us to be more consistent, eventually he will get the idea. Because as of now, I think he is still confused as to why exactly we go outside. We now live in Kew Gardens, but for about 16 years lived in Ridgewood, where we weren't allowed to have pets, and didn't take Tiger for walks until we moved here about last year. How old is Lulu? Thats awesome that you guys got 2. We are contemplating on getting Tiger a little Bro or Sis, but are afraid of jealousy. Like all Yorkies he is beyond believe spoiled, and I can't actually believe I am saying this, but he is our baby. |

Luvs Lulu Donating Member | They get jealous for a whole minute and then they settle in and love having that companion. It's hard sometimes keeping up with everyone's needs. I sometimes feel lazy and want to sleep in but I dont' want them to regress because a mess in the house drives me insane. My husband is forever telling me to let them wait on my schedule but they are used to being walked at six because that is the schedule that I put them on...lol. If you get a bit more consistent then you will be fine. How about just leaving down the pad when you are not home. If you do want a second then it's good to get his schedule down pat I think that it helps a lot in training the second pup.

| You have 2 yorkies plus 2 kids. I admire you hehe. Yes, you are totally right, we need to be more consistent. I came home today, and took him right out, he did number 2 no problem. Perhaps he knows today is his 2nd bday -=) |

| Don't know if this will help but my girl won't do #2 on the pad coz that's where she does #1 at. She will NOT go right in the same area for two different things, (if you get my drift). I have the pee pad down, and newspaper beside it. She uses the pee pad and then about 15 minutes later goes back over to the newspaper and takes care of the rest of the business. If the paper wasn't there, she'd go right beside the pad on the floor, I know coz I tried to get her to use the pad for everything. She was very easy to train, she was consistent at 11 weeks, and boy, was I tickled! |

| Yes, helpfull, I observed similar behavior in Tiger. If number 2 is there or previous number 1 he is like "Oh Forget it that wee wee pad is dirty, Ill chose the floor" |

| im just alittle concerned that you still have a 2 year old in a crate all day long..... can you at least put him in a hallway or a room, or kitchen with gates perhaps???...lexi is also going to be 2 next month and she still pees on my rug and there is nothing i can do about it... it surely sticks huh?

| I completely agree with Gina. I don't think crating a dog all day is good for any dog. They can take on all sorts of bad behaviors and odd quirks. I'd hook an ex-pen up to the front of the crate so he would have a play room, or put baby gates up and let him have a room that has no carpet. Put two pads down side by side. Put water, toys and such. Have someone come walk him during the day. What ever it takes to keep him from living in a crate. That is just too much. |

| I think I might have miscommunicated the terminologies. He doesn't really stay in a small crate, rather in his play pen area. I took a picture below for you to see. It isn't really bad at all, he hast plenty of toys and space to himself for the duration of the week day. playpen.JPG In all the articles and books I read, it says that crates (for puppies) and play pens for small dogs are absolutely his friend. If you train your dog to appreciate and not fear the area he stays in, his behavior will be fine, with no problems. Tiger is fully accustomed to staying home during the week, and doesn't seem to have separation anxiety. He doesn't destroy or chew anything like his wee wee pad or any of the toys. During last summer (06) we removed his play pen area and allowed him freedom to the entire room (its our office \ computer room), and he was fine, until he learned to snatch stuff off my desk. (Yes my desk). There were just too many interesting items for a little boy to handle, and we brought the play pen back for now. I think the biggest problem we have which contributes to his peeing at home, is that my GF (and her Mom when she is over, and even I at times though I try not to anymore), excite him too much. Excitement brings submissive behavior in him, and he just lets it rip. Having a yorkie is probably as challenging as a kid, well maybe not quite.
