| sleep with you issue I know this is posted all the time, but I just need some extra reassurance and a newbie mommy. Tobie has been sleeping in his crate and goes out a couple of times during the night. About an hour before I wake up, he starts whining and I let him in bed with me which works and has been since the first full night he slept in his crate a month and a half ago. The past couple of weeks, I've "slipped" up and some nights I've fallen alseep with him on the bed and he ends up sleeping up there, or other nights, I let him up half way through the night. The "book" says NO SLEEPING in the bed. Tobie's 4months old and does well, no potty accidents up there and I know what the book says, but I feel bad keeping him in his crate, but then I feel bad because I'm not following the "rules" from the book. HELP and provide some advice. My heart says its okay, but the rules say its not, whose right? Its only me at home whereas his sister is with my dad and his fiance 2 hours away. Thanks in advance |

| I would say that is an individual choice. Yes the book states no sleeping in bed because that makes the dog your equal and you need to be Alpha. Buddy has been sleeping with me for 2yrs. The first year I spent loosing sleep and trying to keep him off the bed! He won. He, now, is a sound sleeper and does not move until I do. If your baby is trained and will not go potty in the bed I would let him stay. He just wants to be next to you and be cozy too. Rules are made to be broken Carol & Buddy |

| I agree with everything Carol said. Do YOU want him to sleep with you or sleep in the crate? My two sleep with me, always have. I don't have any "alpha" issues with them. I think this sleep issue should just be a personal choice. Good luck in working out what is best for the two of you!

| Thanks for the advice, he knows who the alpha dog is....ME! I'd rather us both get a decent night's sleep more than anything and he goes a lot longer to potty sleeping in the bed than in the crate. He holds it more. Thanks for the advice. Quote:

| I don't mind him sleeping up there, we sleep better I think that way, but since is the first time of being a yorkie mommy, I want to do the right things. He doesn't bother me up there. Maybe we'll try it that way tonight and see how it goes. Thanks Quote:

| Hi, Mine all sleep with me. The only one who can't hold it through the night gets up and uses the potty pad and then comes back to bed. One sleeps with me on my pillow, one curls up next to my belly and the other lays by my feet. I can't sleep without them now, the bed feels empty. They all know for sure that mommy is the alpha. They just like to snuggle. Whitney |

| Sleeping with you is OK as long as there are no issues. If Tobie takes your spot and growls when you try to move him, then he can't sleep in the bed. Otherwise it's OK. Beware... they kick. Loki "runs" in his sleep.

| Thanks guys, this is all helpful information. I've been torn about this for several weeks with no peace but I think this has helped. Tobie knows who is the mommy and the alpha dog, that was made clear from day one. If I'm laying on my back watching tv, he likes to lay on the pillow behind me and put his head on my shoulder and fall asleep that way. Its incredibly sweet. |

Just make sure he will hop off or knows how to tell you he needs to go out! You don't want accidents on the bed because he doesn't know how to get down.

| There is the old saying of if your dog sleeps with you, they become the "Alpha".. The reason I say old saying is because new studies have been done and results are out. Dog have no such issues as in if they sleep in the bed, it doesn't make them think they are the "Alpha" although I bet a lot of people still thinks so because of the old school influence. I have read it in an article, reliable and if I can find it, I will post the link but I am pretty busy right now being that it is Chinese New Year Eve today. So don't worry too much about them becoming the Alpha. My dog do not sleep in the bed with me though, he sleeps in his bed right beside my bed and he moves throughout the night, sometimes he goes to the hallway, sometimes under the bed and wherever he likes but when he was younger, he sleeps in his bed for fear that I will dissapear I am just telling this because a lot of people think they will become Alpha sleeping in bed and even some trainers still believe in that.

| me too! I have 3 in the bed with me right now... I wouldnt have it any other way. I keep an ottoman at the foot of my bed so mine can safely get off the bed in the night if they need to. I keep a puppy gate up so they cannot run all over the house and we all do just fine. My 95 lb. lab sleeps in the bed with my daughter... its all about the dogs..... at least in my house it is! Donna

| I doubt it changes the behavior at all..I mean..my pups all sleep with me..heres the lowdown.. Cosmo is a grouch either way LOL Minnie is the sweetest dog on the face of the earth and Lillian is a playful little pup its just the personality I really don't think sleeping in bed with you is going to make it worse. |

| At bedtime, Meeko slept in his crate for about the first three months of his life. I'm sure not how it started, but from about the four or so month along he began sleeping with us. (I think it was about the time he realized he could "hold it" throughout the night.) We wouldn't have it any other way. In fact, we recently bought a beautiful new bed, but forgot about how high it was from the floor. So, Frank and I went back to the furniture store and picked out a beautiful settee to add to the foot of the bed for Meeko to use to get up and down. He is pad trained and if he needs to go in the middle of the night, he gets down, goes to do his business, and then right back up to bed. And he is NOT a morning dog, he hates to be distrubed in the mornings. Its so cute how he will scoot under the covers, thinking I can't find him. Actually, we three go out of town alot. So having Meeko used to sleeping with us works out great for traveling. Whether its at family/friends homes or in a hotel, he comes to bed with us and pretty much stays there all night. If he has to get down, his pad is always there. As for alpha... he and Frank both know who the Alpha is in this house. LOL Meeko is a great dog and so very smart. He is now 1 1/2 years old. |
