| Is my puppie normal???? I brought my new baby Mango home on Monday, a little girl 10 weeks old. From reading these forums the last week and asking questions about crate traning with a new little one, I am blown away and very suprised at Mango's behavior. I expected her to cry most of the first night home and to have to take her potty about every 3 hours through the night. When we took her home that first afternoon,I hada Petsmart pen set up with the crate inside, door open. I placed her in the pen and within 5 minutes she had climbed by herself into the crate and fallen asleep. The first night... no crying at all. At about 4AM she whimpered, I took her out to pee, she then went straight back to the crate and to sleep until 6.45. Last night she slept straight through the night in the crate until 6.45 this morning, when I took her out for her first wee-poop. Now you probably wonder why I'm not happy. Well, during the day, she only pees about every 4 HOURS!!! She eats very well, is full of unbelievably mishchievious energy. When she wakes from her naps, I take her out immediately, but she will NOT pee.She hops around the yard, chases my feet, chases leaves and anything else that moves, but she does not pee.(I wait at least 10-15 mins before giving up and going back inside.) She will sometimes only pee a full hour after a very long nap, even though she might have eaten just before. Anyone with any ideas? Should I be concerned? Is this in any way normal for such a tiny dog; she only ways 1lb 2ozs. Please respond as I am very concerned!!! |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | Morgan didn't cry at night or beg to go outside either when i first got her home. she would wait until 5-7 in the morning when she heard my father was awake and then she would give a couple cries. Is Mango drinking water throughout the day? Is she still getting three meals a day? What food is she eating? Is she acting healthy and normal otherwise?

Her behaviour is extremely rambunctious when she's awake, not lethargic at all... just wants to play and chase my poor older yorkie all day.

You mentioned that she doesn't drink alot of water, that could be why she isn't peeing as much thru out the day. I guess the liquids that are in her foods are processed more then just passing thru. i'm sure if you were to switch her to a dry food she would start to drink more water. as long as she is acting normal otherwise then i wouldnt' worry too much about the peeing. maybe she can just hold it longer at a younger age then others. i'd be happy about not having to take her out as often LOL

| Congrats on your new baby, I have been anxious to hear how things were going? Sounds GREAT!!!! As for the above poster asking about goats milk, the person I got mine from fed them goats milk until they were about the size of your babe, I think it's very rich in fattys that the LITTLE ONES need. I agree, I would get them some dry food that helps her teeth/gums, that sounds like soft moist food. I recently added a moist food to my puppys food, but I am only going to add it in the morning meal, because it seems as though my baby pees a LOT MORE with the moist food, but he also drinks a lot of water throughout the day. What I have found from a lot of people, is that your lil girl is sure to change after she gets more comfortable at your house. She will more likely get on a poo and pee schedule and then you will be set. Everything is so new right now. Sounds like your babe has a great disposition, sounds a lot like mine.......easy going and FULL of Fun................and energy!!! My pup LOVED his crate FROM the beginning!!!! |

My furkids Donating Member | Congrats on your new furbaby!! And.....be happy!! My first Yorkie (Sadie) never cried in her crate, or any other time, from day 1...My new furbaby (Lillie) however, whined ALL THE TIME!!! even when she was being held! I didn't sleep for the first 5 nights!! I was up with her every hour!! finally I just left her in her crate and would tell her STOP AND GO TO SLEEP! eventually she did...She will now only whine if she needs to go potty which, rarely happens at night... I wouldn't complain that she doesn't keep you up!! LOL

| Congrats on your new puppy! I wouldnt worry too much either. Like the others suggested, switch to a dry food for their teeth. Since it was too hard for him to chew, I would chop it up in a food processor with hot water to soften it a little but it still had some crunch to it. He slept through the night the first day I brought him home. He only wimpered when he had to go to the bathroom..which was once. I was so concerned I kept waking up to check on him. He would look up as if I was disturbing his rest! He's really laid back too which I am thankful for...that is why the breeder called him sleepy. Good luck!

| I'd say your lucky! Venus would get me up at least 2 times at night to potty. That first week, she'd potty in the crate, then cry for me to clean up. Sometimes we don't need to question, and be thankful! But I'd sure put on dry food for the teeth, like everyone else said. |

| Is my puppie normal???? Congrats on your new puppy! The same thing happened to my with Dunks, except the peeing part -- he had A LOT of accidents! But yeah, when my bf surprised me for Christmas with a Yorkie, he slept through the night, but I was the one who couldnt sleep. I watched him all night... but there he was, on his back in his bed fast asleep. I would go to him and try to wake him up, but no use--he opened his eyes, looked at me and went back to bed. So adorable. I called in that day to work coz of lack of sleep... and Dunks didn't bark for awhile either. He still rarely barks at all... My dog sleeps through the night still. He only goes potty when HE wakes me up at 6:00 am so I can walk him to his pee pee pad which is about 5 feet away from my bed. Then he would crawl back in bed with me. He's such a weird dog! But I love him to pieces. He does whimper now when I leave him in his play pen, but for a short period of time only... Good luck with your puppy! She's adorable! |

| AAaaahhh!!! thanks guys!!! I just read all your messages and feel sooo much more at ease with my little baby. I guess I should be thankful that she's such a good sleeper at night. As for the infrequent peeing, maybe that will change with the dry diet- the breeder. like what y'all said, instructed me to start weening her off the canned puppy food/goats mild/cottage cheese and to start her on increasingly larger portions of dry kibble until that is her sole food source. I was happy to see that you all like the Nutro small puppy bites because that is what he recommends. Then she will probably start drinking more water. What a helpful place this forum is and how lovely of all of you to take the time to respond to a new, panicky yorkie Mom. Waking up in the morning, when I take her at first out of the crate, having that little puppy breath on my face with those little yorkie kisses makes it SO WORTHWHILE.... I am in totally YORKIE HEAVEN: Meet my little Mango: |

| I forgot, one more question: my Mango is only eating 3 meals a day. Is this enough? I thought puppies are supposed to have 4? Also, how do I transition her to the dry kibble? I have left some of the Nutro Small puppy bites out for her in a separate bowl, but all she does is throw them around and play with them like a kitten, with an occasional one eaten once in a while. She does seem to treat them more like toys than food..... |

For the first 4 weeks I had FREE STANDING food in his bowl, but then I started realizing how much he eats, and now I put some in a bowl 2 x a day, but also if there is some left, I leave it in there, and there usually is some left. That brings up a question also.........mine eats only about 1/4 c. a day, is that enough?? He USUALLY has some left at the end of the day, but not always.
