| Relaps! We brought our Ginger home at 8 weeks and it took us a good couple months to potty train her. We use the Wee Wee pads since we live in an upper unit condo. Everything was going great until a few months ago. She is now going everywhere and she's almost 1. Our entire condo has carpet and now we have horrible stains everywhere. We spray the spots she goes with a doggie stain/smell remover, but it's not working and it's the only one we've found that does not bleach our carpet. We've tried re-training her and it's not working. I keep getting mixed reviews about how many pads to have. Some say to only have it in one spot and others say to have them in several spots. We keep her in the kitchen while we're at work. She used to hold it until one of us got home. Now we have to keep a pad in there. She also used to hold it during the night. Now we have to keep one close to her bed and she sometimes doesn't even go on that. She sleeps in our bedroom and it's not pleasant. Someone please give me some advice. I just don't know what to do anymore.

| I think the problem is that they just can't differentiate well between the floor and a very flat mat. Also it appears that they don't necessarily know when they sniff the potty pad, that their little rear ends are over the mat when they go. I haven't tried it yet, but I'm thinking of getting one of those frames that holds the potty pad for our pad. I hope that having a frame with rigid sides will help our puppy see where the floor ends and the pad begins. Also I've been reading that reinforcing helps them retain the idea of going in the right spot. So try to catch your dog in the act of using the pad and give treats the minute you do. Timing is essential. It has to be immediately following otherwise it doesn't work. And I suspect that Yorkies all need reinforcement from time to time due to their inborn tendency to be difficult to train. I also highly recommend the book called "Don't Shoot The Dog" written by a very reputable animal trainer. She is one of the people who developed the positive reinforcement movement in animal training and has been a professional trainer for years. She makes a really good case for positive reinforcement. She also explains how to train even the most stubborn of animals using positive reinforcement and timing. Last edited by Sweetums; 01-12-2007 at 04:00 PM. |

| That is some very nice advice and makes sense. I never thought about having sides to the pads (litter box). Does anyone else have these? My 12 week old is getting to be difficult to train also. She had it down for a few weeks now squatting anywhere she wants. Im thankful there is tile in the kitchen and most of the house.

| I'm having the same problem.....and I thought I've tried everything but I'm quite sure I haven't.....Brandi turned 9 months old on 01/12/07......I tried wee wee pads, I bought the frame....she pulled the wee wee pads right out of the frame and tore them up.....my vet suggested litterbox training her.....he told me exactly what to do......she wouldn't even go in the litter box with the wee wee pad in there....she is also using my upstairs hallway (carpeted) and WAS using the pads up there........then all of a sudden she started using my kitchen floor.....I also didn't know if I should use more than one pad around the house.....I've had dogs my whole life......Brandi is my first yorkie and I adore her......I'm just so frustrated....I have to say I haven't tried crating her.....I have a hard time thinking of doing that to her.......I would appreciate any help at all.... |

| Inez, given Ginger's sudden change in peeing habits and her increased frequency of urination, the first thing that I would do is have the vet check her for a urinary tract infection (UTI). Good luck.

| Potty training That's why we are walking around on concrete floors. We are in the process of laying wood down. Our newest baby Abbie is doing really well for her age, but just when you think that BAM they revert to peeing everywhere. I keep a potty pad by the back door for emergencies. She is really good about going to door but sometimes chooses to use the pad. Especially if it's cold outside. We also keep a pad in her kennel in the bedroom and I keep the door open all day because if she's back there she will jump in and use that pad. Our oldest was a yr old in Sept and she is completely trained. I don't ever kennel her. This has helped Abbie to learn to go to the door because she watches her big sister. Also like one of the other posts said, praise her like crazy if you see her potty on her pad. I am always asking Abbie if she wants to go outside. I love how they tilt their little heads trying to understand what your saying. Good luck and hang in there. |

| Well, I don't know what to say about the potty training going backwards. I know they "act out" this way sometimes, but the exact cause probably varies from dog to dog. I'm having the same problem with Chuey but he's off the hook because he is very ill. Today is not a good day for him. As for the carpet, I really like this product I buy at Costco. Its called Oil Eater. You can find it in the automotive section. You can use it full strength or dilute it. I use it on carpet, clothing, and just about anything to clean. I dilute it with may 1/4 water and use it like this on everything. So if its safe for my clothes, its safe for the carpet. Hasn't failed me yet and I've been using it for years. It's pretty cheap too, like 7 bucks for a big container that comes with a spray bottle. Good luck!!

| I have a 13 yr old and my new 3 month old. I always heard the oldest can be used to train the youngest. Not true in my case so far. First, the puppy always attacks my senior everytime she gets a chance and eats her food. My 13 yr old will go outside but also will make on the tile. We are thinking its her age, don't know for sure. The puppy was hitting the pad for a few weeks but relapsed. After reading the threads, I understand this is not a big concern. She will go outside also which is a good thing but the weather took a turn here and she just finished antibiotics. She is crated when we are home and is confined to the small laundry at night etc. I have attempted to try to pad train the oldest a few times but she is pretty senile as it is. She has wondered off several times and will never come when we call her.
