| help anyone!! Hello everyone!, I have a question for you guys. How do you teach your cuties when to let you know he or she needs to go to the bathroom?I heard or read somewhere tie bells to a string and hang it on the door and hit that every time it's time to go outside and he will eventually know if he hits that he will be letting me know he has to go potty, but he is scared to death of those bells.Any suggestions would help alot. thankyou linda |

| We tried the bell thingee... didn't work.. I kept saying " I need a sign to know you have to GO!!" But,, no sign! Eventually, he would go and sit in my line of sight and whine... and One day , I said " Oh theres my sign" ha So ever since thats what he does,, I just waited him out and he came up with it! Until they do,,, take em out often,,,thats the best way to teach them,,, outside Potty! Even,if we are going to the car,, we stop and see if he has to pee.. so he knows,,when ya hit the grass ya pee... and he does!

| We used the bell idea with my last dog, Kimba, he was a Samoyed and it worked really well... Maximus is not so good with the bells he just plays with them... I find he will make a special "potty noise" when he needs to pee... kinda like a whine... he also sniffs in circles. I take him out right away after that!

| have tried EVERYTHING! Hello, I have a year old yorkie. For the most part she does really well. She does not do much to let us know that she needs to go out. She is much better in her crate but I would like to let her sleep out of her crate with our other dogs. How long does it usually take to train the smaller dogs? Any helpful advice? I have been letting her out every hour or letting her stay outside in the pen during the day. trouble and Angel |

| The bell works great for us!! Chewie is 7 months old and we taught him to ring the bell, but it took a LONG TIME! We started when he was around 4 months. We stood there and practiced forever, I would hold a treat behind the bell he would bump the bell to get the treat and he would get the treat and I would open the door. I would also say "ring the bell." The first step was to establish ringing the bell with opening the door. After that I would say "ring the bell" he would ring it, then I would open the door, we would walk out the door and then he would get the treat. This helped to establish ring the bell, the door opens, we go outside. I spent days and days doing this. Then everytime he acted like he needed to go to the bathroom we would go to the back door and tell him to ring the bell before opening the door. After two months he was going to the door and ringing the bell. Now sometimes I will be upstairs and hear that bell ringing; I run down as fast as I can because I know he means it! It works, but you have to really be willing to put in the time. |

Yorkie Lover Donating Member | Magic is just the same way...she will just go stand by the door until we saw her...she will just stand and stand...so we tried scratching her paw on the door and said "outside, outside"...now she will stand by the door and when she REALLY needs to go she will scratch on it to get our attention...this has worked for us...maybe it will for you!!!

| Thanks for the advice. Do you just hang the bell from the knob? She does good at going to the door but we do not always know that she is there and then it is too late. She atleast knows to go to the door when she needs to go out. Thanks again. Trouble and Angel |

| We use a windchime We have a cheap little windchime - seriously it's this little cheap thing - and it hangs from the door knob on a string so you can get it as low to the ground as you need too. We got it at a kennel but I bet you can find them anywhere. If your dog even accidentally brushes against it, make a huge deal about it and open the door. It works, it just takes persistence. |

| Oh, I do have a small wind chime and I was sort of wondering what to do with it because it is so small. I will try it. Thanks so much for all the advice. Trouble and Angel |

| http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6466 Every time we went out I hit the bell with Gizmos paw and said go potty. The next day he jumped up and hit the bell all by himself. Sometimes he hits it just to go out to play with the cat thats on the porch, I always make him go to his potty yard first, then he can play. Phyllis |

| Linda, I'm doing the bell thing now. Just started it this week. I first hung it on the back door knob, but Maggie thought it was a new toy. I have relocated it now to a higher position. I RING it for now, and ask her if she needs to PP. When she gets to a point where she knows what the bell sound is for, I will lower it. They say you can take their paw and hit the bell each time, while you are asking them if they need to PP or Potty. I was told not to use the word OUTSIDE, because they would ring the bell all the time, even to go and meet the neighbors. |
