| Is my pup too old to train? We just got our new little baby Bella on Thursday Oct. 19 we have been working hard to try and potty train her, we give praise and treats when she goes outside, and we think she is doing good and then yesterday she did not do good at all. She held it all morning because she won't go in her kennel and I went home at lunch and took her out, she went outside, and then was good in the afternoon but last night we took her out and she wouldn't go and then she would come in and go several different times. My husband is getting discouraged and is thinking she is too old train, but I really don't think she is. Any tips or help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Jamie |

| Jamie, you really haven't had Bella for very long. Housebreaking can take much longer than you've had her. Be sure you reward heavily (with praise and treats) when she gets it right! I seriously doubt she's too old to learn. How old is she, BTW?

| I really doubt she's too old to train. Like FirstYorkie said, it generally takes longer than a week to housebreak. Some people get their pups when they're 3 months old, and they're not fully trained (no accidents) until a year old. However, some people are much luckier and their pups are trained in two-three weeks. How old is Bella??

Welcome to YT. You didn't day how old your yorkie is, but they are never too old to train. It can take some yorkies up to a year to train. there are many threads on here about house training. do a search for potty training. Just about every new member asks this question. It takes a lot of time and a lot of patience. You can increase your chances for success if you don't allow them the run of the entire house. You need to be consistent, but also flexible. If they aren't learning from one method, after a reasonable length of time, try another one. They want to please you, so if they aren't learning it's because they are just not getting what you want from them. | |

| she is currently 5 months old, I think she is doing good, it is my husband that thinks she is maybe too old, I told him to just be patient. We are giving her tons of praise and a treats every time she goes outside, so hopefully it will work! Last edited by JamieNC; 10-26-2006 at 04:23 AM. |

| I'd confine her to a smaller area, and not let her have run of the house. Take them out about 1 time every hour at first. Venus got the "potty for a treat" really fast. Now she is always looking at me, making sure I see her go, and have a treat ready. Have you thought of using pee pee pads? I do both outside, and pee pads. Venus is 4-1/2 months old, and I'm still working with her. But I've heard of many folks here with much older yorkies, that are teaching (and yes, dogs learing) potty training at more than 2 years old. I looked in this section, and got a lot of great info on potty training. Every post about potty training, I read!! I know praise, praise, praise and treat has really worked for me. That and keeping her in a much smaller area, like x-pen set up in the busiest room in the house, and putting her bedding and toys at one end, and a pee pad at the other end. |

| Last week , I adopted a 3 years old Yorkie girl . I started to train her on pee pads as soon as she arrived home . She have some accidents but one day , she'll be 100% potty trained . The secret is to be patient , patient and patient. |
