| Potty re-training / Wood floor protection? Hey Guys, I live in NYC and hence have a relatively small 1 bedroom apartment. I always get get annoyed when I see people on tv design shows complaining that they've outgrown their 2000sf houses! My wife and I are about to have our kitchen redone. Up until now, the fenced off kitchen has been his playpen while we're away for the day. A corner of it has also been his bathroom. This hasn't really been working out for us since we don't like our eating area to also be his pee/poop space. Here's the problem. With our kitchen renovation we're knocking out the walls so we can no longer keep him there, so it wasn't really even a choice for us. My question to you is two-fold... the area that we're looking to *attempt* at retraining him to go will be on a wee wee pad in the tub in the bathroom. We're thinking of getting him two sets of doggie stairs, one to get into the tub and one to get out. That would really be the perfect setup! Cleanup would be a snap because all we have to do is turn on the shower!!! How doable do you think this is? My second question is, the new gated area to keep our little guy in is the bathroom and the area leading into it. The area leading into it is wood. Even if we properly train him to go in the tub, there will be accidents on the wood area. I know that the acid from the urine will ruin the wood floors. Is there any way that I can prevent that or to somehow cover the floors? Is there a special carpet that I can put down that the urine won't seep through? Anything else? Since the floor has seams in it, I'm also afraid it'll seep down and retain a smell. Any advice? |

| that's a lot to do that's a lot to train all at once. i say use pee pads leading up to the bathtub, and slowly remove the ones furthest away one by one until he figures out to go into the bathtub. |

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | I agree that is a lot to do all at once. I would confine him to the bathroom area for awhile and once he has the hang of going in the tub I would open up the wooden area. I also would make the wood the comfort zone, with a blanket or bed and a few stuffed toys. I think I would keep his water bowl in the bathroom and maybe his food also. It is hard to keep wooden floors looking and smelling nice once urine sets for awhile. They even split and buckle if it gets in the cracks. Maybe try a rubber backed washable rug or two along with the bed. I also have a bit of a problem with my Jazzy who is about 15 mo. old. I didn't get her until she was a year old and I don't think she was trained properly in the first place. That may be why they got rid of her for only $400.00. She would much rather pee on my hard wood floors than go outside even though she sees my other 3 dogs go out with no problems. But I love her dearly so I will continue to work with her until it clicks some day. The joke around our house is that she is the Blonde. that is why she is a bit slow. I'm also a Blonde so it's all in fun. I too will listen to all ideas anybody might have. Best of luck to you... Key2Yorkies ~ Jan |

| Maybe you could put down a plastic shower curtain or liner or one of those plastic runner things on the wood floor. This would not be real attractive but would protect the floor until you feel he is more trustworthy about going where you want him too. |

| Im also a fellow new yorker and my little one has an accident once in a while on the wood floors. SO I undertand you. I agreed with them that is a lot of training all at once. I like the idea of covering the floor with those platics covers for the floors until the pups is train. Good luck. Have you join the NYC meet up groups? Check it out. | As an alternative to plastic matting and puppy pads have you thought about a kitty litter tray. I have a friend with a yorkie who swears by hers. My girls just dig it it but maybe worth a go?
