| My dillema with Juliet I got her at 8 weeks old. She had been in a pen with the other puppies at the breeders home where half the pen was papers and the other half was where the puppies slept. I made the mistake of bringing her home and giving her the run of the house from day one. I have put down wee wee pads and she has gone on them a few times but for the most part, she pees and poops wherever she wants. I will take her out and she will go pee, and I will wait and wait for her to poop and she won't. I take her in and she goes on the carpet. I have a crate that has a divider to make the crate smaller for her to stand up and turn around in. I put her in it and she poops in it. I am sick of cleaning the bed in the crate! I can't stand it! I also can't stand the poop all over the carpet. She has been sleeping in my bed and didn't mess in it, until last night. She had some wet poop spots and it woke my husband and I up at 3 am. I took her outside and then put her in the crate. She barked and barked. So today, I have been taking her out about every 45 mins and keeping her in the crate while I am doing housework and I can't see her 100% of the time. She was in there for 10 mins and pooped! So I have decided to keep her in there, take her out to go potty, then let her play for a little bit and put her back in the crate. She is constantly barking and crying. What am I doing wrong? What should I be doing? Please help!!! |

| Ok, well I tried another thing, I put her in the laundry room with the crate door open, and a wee wee pad on the floor. She peed and pooped in there ON THE FLOOR. This was AFTER I had just taken her out!!! I am at my wits end! |

| Some quick ideas for you 1st - you are expecting too much. She does NOT know she needs to go until it's too late. Don't let her on your bed or anywhere difficult to clean. Stick to the tile floor and her crate. Give her another month or two before she starts to get it. In the mean time, watch for her signals - some dogs circle or sniff first. Loki didn't, he'd just squat with no signs. Try to minimize accidents by taking her out A LOT like every 15 mins. The fewer accidents in the crate she has the faster she will learn. She may not know how to tell you, but you know the more often you let her out to go the more likely it is that she's empty. If you crate her because she won't go, try again in 5 mins. 8 weeks is *really* young. I believe in crate training but if you find she is having an accident every 1/2 hour you may want to try a playpen for a few weeks until she gets bigger. 2nd - take the bed out of the crate. If there is room for a bed there is too much room. An easy to wash blanket is OK although my little monster figured out how to pee on the blanket and shove it under the divider. She probably needs to go every 30 minutes and again, she won't know that she needs to poop if you let her out 10 minutes before she figures out she needs to. She is not going to "know" to go on pads - how are you encouraging her to go there? If they were in a pen with paper she is used to just "going" wherever. Training her will be a combo of your consistency and her maturity.

Are you trying to outside or pad train her??? I'm confused and it makes a difference. We only outside trained Loki.

Let me correct you, she is 11 wks not 8 wks. I've had her for a few weeks now. Ok, so should I let her have the run of the house if I'm paying attention to her sniffing? Or should I keep her confined in a room all alone? I feel bad doing that because she's used to being around our family. WHen she's in the laundry room alone, she barks constantly and gets all worked up. I have taken her to her pads when she sniffs around to pee, and she's used them a few times, but for the most part she just goes wherever. I would much rather teach her to just go outside. How do I do that? With treats? Should I crate her? Should I let her roam around the house or the laundry room? What about night time? She barks all night if she's in that crate.

Can you put the crate in your room? Loki slept in his crate next to the bed until he was big enough (and trained enough) to jump off the bed. THen we closed the bedroom door and he'd scratch when he wanted to go downstairs and outside. Eventually he learned to run downstairs and ring his bells even in the middle of the night. He would also sit next to me and cry to wake me up or literally stand on my chest or put his paws on my head. When he slept in his crate at night I always took him out at about 2am to avoid nighttime accidents. Otherwise you can put her in a small cuddle bed IN your bed, as long as you are a light sleeper. If she stirs even a little, you should get up and let her out. Otherwise set an alarm and wake her up to go out. We learned quickly it was easier to get up for 5 mins and take Loki out than wake up to a screaming, wet dog who needed a bath. When you go to the door say "Outside!" and go outside. Wait outside (stand still, only give her the length of her leash to sniff) and when she goes - immediately give her a treat and praise her. Do this repeatedly for several weeks and she'll start to let you know she needs to go out. If she has an accident in the house take a step back in the crate training. Don't give too much freedom too soon!! Also, if she starts to sniff say "NO" or "ACK" or whatever to interrupt her, pick her up (yes even if she's peeing, potty training is messy!!) and RUN outside. This is where the leash comes in handy. Then praise her when she finishes. Also you can take her poop outside (you get over the icky factor real quick) and let her sniff it. Act like she did it! She'll get the idea!!!

Thanks again for your reply. During the day, like when I'm on the internet I let her lay in my lap and sleep. Is that ok? If I'm sitting around, I want her with me, not barking in the crate. This is all new to me, I've never crated a dog before.

| Absolutely. Very doubtful she will pee in your lap! BUT as soon as she starts to wake up I would take her outside. Basically the rule is take your dog out when they wake up, after eating and drinking, during and after playtime, etc. The whole point is to get your dog in the right place at the right time. If she's on your lap, you're watching her. It's fine!! Crate training is pretty basic and it works, but the typical rules that say a 3 month old dog can hold it for 3 hours does not apply to yorkies! They have tiny bladders and have to go out a lot - that's why people say they are difficult to train. Difficult for the human

| Reece will be 11 weeks tomorrow and I have eliminated pee pads..they worked well for Darla but seem to confuse him. I take Reece out every 30 mins or so OR if I see him circling or with his nose to the ground..out we go!! He knows we go out the back door to the fenced in yard so IF he has an accident it is by the back door. The only time he goes in the crate is when we arent home and luckily enough he doesnt go in there. If you can get him outside more often that might do the trick, as they just cant hold it..and when its time to go its time. I try to get Reece out before he shows the signs. Knock on wood..this works for us. Welcome to YT BTW!! Dawn |

| Well, she didn't pee in the house today! YAY! The bad thing is, she didn't poop outside, not once. I had her out there for 45 minutes!!!! i had to run to the store so i put her in her crate. I was gone for 10 mins, and low and behold she pooped all in her crate! I was so mad!!!!! Another good thing, it's thunderstorming here right now, she woke up from her nap and I took her out on the patio with a wee wee pad, and she peed on it! |

| Update on Juliet. I feel like such a nerd! I am so happy, I feel like I have a newborn baby who finally slept through the night! LOL I crated Juliet last night for the first time. I put the crate next to the couch and slept out there with her. She was FINE. SHe started to bark a lil, and I told her shhhhhh. She slept until 5 am and when I took her out, she pooped! I'm so proud of her!!! |

| No kidding, Bnot! She has had a few setbacks but that's to be expected. She's getting more used to going out and had another good night in the crate last night. |
