| Anyone know of any dog trainers? Hello! I wanted to post and see if anyone knew of or recommended someone or a company that could help me out. To make a long story short, I'm pregnant and unfortunately have had complications that has landed me on bed rest, which in turn, has screwed up my plans on getting my pups housebroke and trained before our new addition arrives. Does anyone know of anyone that does this kind of thing? I'm in Virginia but am willing to travel. I've found some training facilities that have a type of boarding/obedience camp, where they keep the dog and work on the housebreaking and training of basic commands, but they are very expensive. I'm willing to pay for the services, but can't afford 1000's for it. If anyone has any suggestions, I would appreciate it! If I can't get someone to help me, I'm afraid that we are going to have to find new homes for the puppies. My husband is just very worried about them peeing and pooing on the floor after we bring the baby home, as well as jumping up and all that. Thanks!

| The problem with those places is that you don't know what types of training they are using - since you can't observe them. Do you want them to put a choke collar on your pup? I doubt it. I wouldn't trust those places. Plus, what works at their training facility won't necessarily translate to your home. They need to learn to take commands from you - not from the trainer. We've taken many training classes and we always give our own dogs the commands. The trainer demonstrates on her dog, then we try with our dog. The most important part is practicing at home. You are best off getting a private trainer or petsitter come to you, since you can't leave the house. Loki's trainer does in home consults all the time. This helps set up a plan, but doesn't do the day to day stuff. As far as basic commands there's no reason you can't sit on the couch with a treat can and work on those things - only the housetraining will be hard. We have a local petsitter that will make multiple trips if necessary and since dog potty breaks are her livelyhood - i'd trust her judgement on housetraining. A reliable neighbor might be great too - a stay at home mom or retired neighbor might be happy to be compensated for playing with your dog all day. (Our neighbors just asked us to help out with their new puppy since we work much closer to home and shorter hours than they do - of course I'm going to help!) Some private trainers will take a dog into their home under special circumstances - or maybe the breeder will take the dog back and train it for a while? I know many breeders will hold a dog until it is a little older. Do you have a relative or close friend who will take the pup for a month or so to get things started? Or someone who can stop over a lot? I think most people would understand that bedrest isn't something to mess with and be happy to help out - don't be afraid to ask! Good luck!!!

| Thanks for the advice. I've been on the phone all day talking with trainers. I have scheduled one trainer that I just seemed to click with that has four yorkies of her own . So she understands what I'm going through trying to train mine. She is going to come out on Monday for an hour and observe the dogs, talk with me about what I want and just look at the things that I have for them, the set up of my house and try to come up with a game plan for housebreaking that will be easy for me and efficient for the dogs. My husband doesn't want to spend the money to have someone come out and just give me advice, although she is about $40 cheaper than anyone else I've talked to today. And if she can help me, then that means I'll be saving a ton of money on carpet cleaning and not to mention my sanity! So we'll wait and see what she says when she comes out here and hopefully, she'll have a solution and game plan that I can do physically myself right now. I can't really ask my family to help, as I only have my parents that live close by and they are helping me already with my two skinbabies, while I'm having to stay down. I never thought of a pet sitter coming out and helping, I might have to check into that! Thanks!! Melanie
