| Too Late To Start From Scratch??? I am really at my wit's end with the potty training. Gilbert is 10 mos and will go outside, but then once we get back inside, the minute I turn my back he has peed at least once or twice again. I know I give him plenty of time outside...about 10-15 min. I have used the belly band and it was great to begin with, but now it seems I keep it on him all the time and I know that's not fair. Do I need to just start from square one (whatever that is...hee) or is he too old already....help!!!! |

BANNED FOR NOT MAILING PRODUCTS PURCHASED | these little buggers are so hard to train!! I'm with you and I know how you feel! I would go back to the crate and only take him out to potty, after he wakes up from a nap he should go outside right away, and when he potties, praise him up and down like crazy and then give him a treat, I would let him play for awhile then put him back into the crate, you may have to do this for a week or even longer. Good Luck!!! |

| Thanks so much for the advice. I tell you they are soooo hard to train! He sleeps with me and holds it all night so I know he can hold it if he wanted to. Gonna start all over I guess... |

| I don't think it's ever too late to start from scratch. You may have to stay outside with him longer than 10-15 minutes at the time. What you want to do is give him many, many opportunites to be successful at "going" outside. When he does, have a party! Yummy, yummy treats and loads of excited praise. If he sneaks off to pee in the house, you probably need to either use or crate or else tether him to your side (with a leash attached to your belt) when he can't watch his every move. When you do catch him going in the house, don't get angry. Just startle him into stopping with a loud "no" and rush him outside to finish. If he does finish outside, he's earned another party! During this time of intense training, I probably wouldn't use the Belly Bands. I think they give him the idea that it's okay to pee inside.

| Is Gilbert neutered? Before my boys were neutered, it seemed that they didn't empty their bladders when they went out. They'd pee several times, but still would lift their legs once they came inside. After they were neutered, this stopped. I know other YTers have said their male dogs still did this after neutering, but mine did not. Might be something you'd want to consider...

| Thanks to all! He is not neutered and that is something I am going to do. Also, I have not tried the tethering...great idea! I did wonder if I was confusing him with the belly band....yall are so helpful! |

| Missgine - I feel your pain. I have two that are still not 100% trained and it is so annoying and frustrating. I too am going back to the basics. My boy is 9 months old and my girl is 8 months old. Good luck.

| It is never ever too late to start over. One of the huge handicaps in training a Yorkie is also their greatest asset. They were bred to work independently -- without human intervention. In other words, they don't NEED us to tell them what to do and when to do it. What has helped me is designating a special "potty place" in the yard. I walk the kids to the potty place and when they potty, then they are rewarded by getting to play in the "play area". If they don't potty outside, I bring them back in and then try again in a few. GOOD LUCK! And when you find a technique that workd for you, please share it with the rest of us. |

| How I trained Chewy... It's worth a try! Chewy is 41/2 months old... He only goes outside and he goes with in 3 min or less!(no kidding!) Chewy is not neutered yet... Here is how I did it. 1. I bought a baby play yard-I think it's the same as an ex-pen but plastic... 2. Put little rocks in side so he couldn't dig and get dirty every time he went potty! And I lined the edges with bricks...(He likes to step up on the bricks when he is done! MY friend's Yorkie does this too!) 3. Put a few leaves on the rocks to hold the smell so they get the idea! Or transfer some of the stuff from where he has been potting so he knows what to do! 4. Take your baby out at least every hour to try... Chewy goes just about every time we take him out... I tell him to potty.. go Pee or Poopie! I also started off giving treats till he got the idea. 5. Watch your Yorkie nonstop when he is in the house and the second you see him start to go... say (don't yell) No no no no..quickly take him out to his POTTY! Chewy got the idea that going in the house wasn't ok after doing this about 4 times!!! Before that I would just clean up the mess and not say anything but I don't think he realized it was any problem!!! Before I took my friends advice and did this play yard thing I would walk Chewy and he WOULD NOT GO! He sniffed EVERYTHING!!! But never took the time to go potty! Then would go inside... I was at my wits end. I think the thing about them having a potty place is there is nothing to sniff... once they sniff it out in the beginning it is always the same! If Chewy doesn't go within 5 min we go back inside.

| Just a question~ Does Chewy let you know when he's inside and needs to go to potty or do you just take him out every hour?
