| It works, it really works Oh my heavens, it really does work! Silly me has bought so many non- barking gadgits, that do not work for Buddy, I truly never thought of coins in a can! I read a thread last week regarding this very thing. I could not wait to get home to try it. He freeked out when I shook the coins in a beer can when he barked. I swear his hair stood up and his eyes bugged out! I laughed so hard I almost, you know what! I have left the house each day with can in hand and he just glares at me wanting to bark but won't do it because of the noise. I am loving it. Stress releaf is just a shake away. Something so simple yet it took me 2 1/2 yrs to try it! Thanks YT member for the suggestion. I thank you but not sure about Buddy. Carol |

| LOL. It DOES work! I have penny cans all over the house. I barely have to use them anymore. I covered mine with a piece of floral fabric held on with a rubber band because it looked kinda trashy with diet coke cans sitting all over the place. Plus, we are such diet coke drinkers, occasionally we would pick up a half full coke to shake...not good...hehe I can just see beer cans all over your place..that's worse than diet coke..

last Easter so I cleaned one out (dumped the beer down the drain) let it dry out and put coins in. Walah - instant stress releaf! loving it. I was a bit embarrased when I told the maintanence man to leave the beer can in front of my door and not throw it away when he cleaned the carpets in the halls. I live in a condo! | I'm glad you found something to WORK for you. I know you must be ecstatic!!! I mentioned in another thread I tried this and it annoyed the SNOT out of Zoie and she barked until I got rid of the can. WHY do I have to have a dog that has to be so different? she doesn't react like most dogs to the tips people here give. I wonder if it's more me than her? But how can you shake a can the wrong way?? |

The problem is this. Not always, but an awful lot of the time, dogs bark to alert others of something they sense isn't right (be it a noise or a child's toy in the wrong location). The fact that something is wrong raises their adrenaline level. Then we do something that startles them. What does that do to their adrenaline level? It certainly doesn't calm them down. Some dogs will be cowered by it and will stop barking. For other dogs, it just revs them up more. The coin-can will stop Joey from barking but I almost never use it. I'm not perfect so I must admit that if I get really frustrated, I bring it out. Generally speaking, though, I prefer not to use it because I know it scares him. I don't want our relationship to be based on fear. Instead, I do 3 things. If something is going on outside that I think will disturb him, I make him sit and wait while I go outside first. I then tell him that the "coast is clear". Believe it or not, this works alot of the time. To know that someone bigger has checked it out seems to make him feel calmer. I have also taught him a "quiet" command which often works. I also use management - I keep the front drapes pulled so that he can't see people outside. If he insists on opening the drapes himself, I baby-gate him away from the front of the house. These are my ideas. I gotta say, though, that barking is often a difficult problem and we have to do what we have to do. However, I do hate to see people use something they know their dog hates as their first line of defense.

| wished it works for us, she's entertained by it and think it's playtime when we shake.

in a can was free and easy to use. Not only that, it "WORKED". Once the dog learns what it means there is no reason to use it just show it and the results are the same. NO BARKING!

| As I said, you gotta do what you gotta do and, in fact, I use it occasionally myself.

IMHO, that's different from people jumping on the band wagon and saying "oh, I didn't know I needed to figure out what he hates most". My point is that I prefer to try other methods first. The fact that a dog stops what he's doing the minute he sees a coin can, a spray bottle, or a newspaper tells us how much he fears that object. Therefore, going that route wouldn't be my first choice. The choice is down to rehoming or using something he fears? Absolutely, 100%, without reservation, I say you made the right decision! I support you all the way. Did I explain myself better that time?

that was left to take care of. I am so very happy the darn can works, now I have what I would call a perfect Yorkie. We have been through alot together, house breaking, chewing, barking, not sleeping at night etc. Now everything finally fell into place for us both. I am lucky he is perfect! He has full run of my condo,(7rooms) he touches nothing anymore, he sleeps as long as I sleep and understands everything I say. The barking for 2 1/2 yrs when I leave was getting un-nerving to say the least. So you can see why I feel it is like a miracle. Have a great day. Carol

| Oh my sister's yorkie is the world's WORST about barking! She sits on the back of the couch and looks out the windows on the front door and just WAITS on something to come by that she can bark at. My sister was at her wits end. This weekend I told her to try the coins in a can. It worked like magic! We had a virtually bark-free weekend! |

| I use the can and pennies as well - it definitely does the trick. Punkin had a bad habit of barking when I was on the phone. Since I work at home this was a HUGE problem. I didn't even have to shake it hard and it worked. I don't think that it scared her really, more got her attention than anything.

| The can with the change in it works for me also. Also our dogs will stop barking when they hear the clicker and that is what we mostly use
