| housebreaking advise I have a new 10 wk old puppy and I need your advise on how to go about housbreaking. I want to start out on the right foot. Here is my situation. My puppy will be in a crate for 6 hrs a day while I am at work. I was told to put him in a crate and only make enough room for him to turn around and lay down. I know he will never be able to hold his bowels that long so in turn he is going to soil his pen. Should I leave enough room in his pen so that I put a pee pad on the other end? I need your help! |

| sorry, but 6 hrs in a crate is too long i think.... its ok if someone goes home and lets her out, but if not, dont do that.... how about an x pen... or what i did is i confined lexi to a small area and provided her with everything she needed.. her crate was also in there so she can sleep in it.. her toys, food, water etc... and wee pad

| Gracie is now 10 weeks. I got her at 8 weeks. If I am not home or can't watch her, I have her confined to an ex-pen. In one part of the pen I have her crate full of bedding, with the door left open. At the other end are the pee pads. Toys and food are kind of in-between. She has been mostly consistent with using the pee pads. She has not had one crate accident. Yesterday, I had her out of her pen playing, with the pen door wide open. Twice she ran into the pen and used her pee pads. Good girl! This system is working great for me. I too think that 6 hours in a crate is way too long. If you put the pad in the crate, it only teaches the baby that it is ok to go in the crate. That defeats the purpose of crate training (dogs don't like to soil their dens).

NO!!! do not allow him to poop in his crate, he will end up walking in it and you will have a terrible mess. If you have to be gone for that length of time you need to give him more space. An x-pen or a small room. | |

| This is all great advise. I appreaciate it. I am going to try the x-pen idea. So I will put his crate in the x-pen along with pee-pads at one end and water and toys, etc... How successful has anyone been with housebreaking using this method? |

| i didnt use an xpen.. i put lexi in the bathroom, with a gate by the door. it worked for me.. then as she got older , she got more room, she got the hallway 15ft, to roam in..now she has the whole house

| i agree that 6 hours is way too long in the crate. the xpen is a good alternative... i got one about a month ago on dog.com and it was a pretty good price.. around $40 i didn't get it for potty training. i got it as a way to contain howie when i was trying to go about my business in the house without having to watch his every move. they're really great because you can still get stuff done but don't have to worry about your dog being cooped up in a crate! he actually won't pee in there even if i do put down a puppy pad b/c he knows it's not his "place".

| i got my puppy 2 days ago, its use to newspaper but doesnt go on it, so i figured to try wee wee pads got it yesterday and stayed telling go and go for 3 hours , go potty i was using that phrase , today she uses it most of the time now and she is 2 months old, just have her pee on the floor if she does that is or put cardboard when she does try watch it and when she goes put it underneath her and then pour some on the wee wee pad and continue taking her to the pad saying go potty for few minutes then it will get use to it very easy, |

| Thanks for all this advise I appreciate it. I have been using an x-pen during the day while I am at work and have place a puppy pee pad in the corner. Lucas has been peeing on it mostly, but won't poop on it. Now as for the house, I need you help. I have been placing pee-pads in every room. I wonder if this is confusing him. He goes on the pee-pads most of the time, not all the time. I praise and give treats and this seems to work. Am I on the right track? Is is usually hit or miss in the beginning and then eventually with time they learn to just go on the pee-pad and that is it? I'll take all the advise I can get. Thanks. |

| try giving him/her something to chew on just before you leave. Pick something he/she really likes and don't give it at other times so that you departure is associated with something pleaseant. Simba used to do this too but I started to give him chicken strips, flossies, bully sticks, etc. right before I am out of the door and he was so busy that he didn't even realized that I was leaving!
