| puppy pads? i've been outside training my baby yorkie for a month now and am starting to realize that maybe it's not the right way for us to go. i live in new england where the winters can be brutal and we had our first experience with rain this week and that didn't go so well. do you advise switching him to puppy pads or a litter box and if so how do i go about doing this. |

| your doing the reverse from me, what i would do is, place the pee pad or whatever you want to use.. (i use pee pads) and place it where you want your puppy to go..make sure puppy sees it and smells it. put him on it and say go potty or whatever term you use... when the pup finally does potty, praise the heck of him...give a treat ,start from there.

| also in New England... and i use puppy pads - snickers has never gone outside so i am unsure how to make that transition but i put the litter box down w/the pee pads and praised her like crazy (even treating) when she went on the pads they have a scent (i dont smell it but i guess they do) that draws them to go there anyway i hope this helps and good luck! |

| Mine use the pee pads as well. I work and I cannot make it home to take them out so we decided that the pads was the best way to go. My babies are now 5 & 4 months old and are 100% pee pad trained. Start by walking him to the pad and telling him go potty or whatever word you want to use. Just stick to the same word all the time. When he goes on the pad make sure you praise him and give him a treat so he can identify that potty on the pad is a good thing and that's where he needs to go. You need to keep your eyes on him at all times and when you noticed that he looks like he has to go potty walk him to the pad...but remember not to carry him...we need to make sure he learns his way to the pad. I used to walk mine to the pad every 30 mins until they learned and it didn't take long. |

| I agree with Gina, Lexi's Mom. That's exactly how we trained Oliver. Lots and Lots of praise/treats, and he got it in no time. Box training him was the best thing we ever did. We never have to worry about wintertime or rain. It's great!

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I use the Jump Start pads from Petsmart and CAli trained on them almost instantly. I kept one in one end of her play pen and one in the dining room, we don't eat in there, and just watched her carefully and placed her on the pads frequently. Since her bed was at one end of the playpen and the pad at the other she always used the pad when confined and learned that's where she was to go.
