| Litter box training? I'm new and don't have a Yorkie yet, but I've been reading alot of posts to learn as much as I can. I've noticed some of you talk about litter box training for your Yorkies, and I was just wondering how well this works out. Thanks! |

| Welcome to YT. I use the litter boxes but I put wee wee pads inside. They work great for TJ and Roxy. I have to continue praise and potty treats though and every now and then one of them revolts and just does potty in a corner somewhere! |

| A litter box with litter is what I trained Oliver with since I got him at 8 weeks old. He is very good about it and even knows that it is JUST his litterbox he's allowed to "go" in (or outside). I go to college and have moved home for the summer, he has been in three or four different homes as a result and hasn't had a problem. I just show him where his litterbox is and after a day or two he's fine to roam the house. I've heard it's hard to potty train a yorkie- I think I got really lucky with Ollie- just be consistant! Good luck!

| Thank you for your replies! I live in a house with a very large backyard, but I thought if litter box training can be done, that would be a better option since we have really cold winters, and we get lots of snow where I live. I worry about taking a little dog out in bad weather. I also thought it would be good for times when we're away from home. Thanks again! |

These little guys do OK in the cold and snow. When it's really cold they just hurry. Mine hate the rain. I use a box with a pee pad, and they are about 95% now. One of them will occasionally go elsewhere. I still don't give them the run of the house unsupervised. They are confined to the kitchen during the day and a crate at night. I have a fenced in patio and try to get them to go outside most of the time, but they still use the fbox regularly too. | |

| My yorkie is litter box trained. It works out fine. She goes into it on her own. They will potty wherever they are trained to go. If you train them to go on your couch they will go. It doesn't matter to them as long as they know where you want them to go. I use horse bedding in my litter box. Very cheap and it lasts forever.

| all training takes time especially "potty" training for yorkies I think it depends on you and the dog I mean the litterbox thing wouldn't have worked when Tila was little she wouldn't be able to jump in the box! I use newspaper, but I wish I would've tried to figure out something with a box, since Tila spends the night a lot of different places |

| I trained Pilla to go in a litter box too. She's 7 months old now and does very well, although occasionally she'll pee somewhere else when the whim grabs her, I guess! I've found, though, that the actual litter must carry her odor and she doesn't like that. Lately I've just been putting a piddle pad inside the pan and she seems to like that. I had read that they don't like to go back into a pan where they can smell themselves, and I guess that's true. It must feel dirty to them??

| Hi! I tried the litter box thing for 1 yr and had NOOOOOO luck! Lexie seemed to think it was a license to go ANYWHERE in my house anytime. I switched her to outside (and I live in Northeast Ohio- so YES it gets VERY cold!!) BUT my house is starting to REEK of urine and I can't take it anymore! The vast majority of folks that litter train seem to have problems. I know there are those lucky ones that had success with litter training out there, but it seems to me that most of the people that have their yorkies 100% trained seem to train them outdoors, for whatever reason!! Maybe its more natural for dogs- I don't know?!!! I am as stumped as can be. BUT so far we are 4 days without any accidents!! THANK GOD!!!! I wish you much luck- I know how frustrating it is!

| Hi everyone! I'm new to this site. I've been reading the posts and they have been very helpful. I just got my first Yorkie (and first dog) exactly one month ago. She is 4 months old. We bought (adopted) her from a pet store where she was used to going potty on paper. I never wanted the hassle of taking a dog out to go potty, and I knew I wanted to litterbox train her. Since she was used to paper, I started with that in a litterbox. There is a litterbox just for dogs. It is much easier to jump into. One of the sides is a little lower for entry into the box. I got mine from Petco. Petsmart also sells it. It is NOT in the cat litterbox section. Go to the dog section where the wee-wee pads etc. are. Anyway, I wanted to put it in the kitchen first b/c I figured it would be easier to clean up an accident in there. However, Sadie prefered another room to do her business. I never quite made it in time to bring her to the box. By the time she started circling and sniffing, she was already squatting & going! So, I put the box where she liked going. It was right in the way where we walk by, but I started there. Once she knew to go in there and had 90% success, I started to slowly move it to my desired location near the basement door. It must be moved SLOWLY. I first made the mistake to move it a little too quickly, and she had some accidents. It took about a week until I was able to start moving it slowly. Then within a couple weeks I had it where I wanted, and she was going in it! (it all depends on how far you need it moved.) I also need to add that we even went on vacation for a week, and Sadie stayed at a friend's house during this training. When we all got back home, I put the box in the original position and was able to move it a little more quicker back to my desired location. Also, I wanted to slowly shift from newspaper (which isn't absorbant or sanitary) to doggy litter (Yesterday's News). I just gave up on that today. She is too interested in the litter pellets as a treat than as her potty. She just eats it, then goes potty elsewhere in the house! So, I am now using wee-wee pads in the box with a few strips of newspaper on top to ease her into it. It is working great! Sorry my (first) post is too long. ....as my husband just informed me... I'm too detail-oriented!
