| Pee Pad vs outdoor pottying Our new pup pees like every 10-15 minutes!!!!! Not in real small amounts so I know he doesn't have an infection. But goodness!!!!!!! That's ALOT! He just turned 8 weeks old. Should I be worried about training now... or wait till he's a little older? I feel training should start right away. Also, is training on a peepad better than the old fashioned go outside way? Any suggestions on how I should do this? I tried newspaper. Doesn't work. He is confined to one room while not in his crate. If I'm cooking dinner or what not, he's allowed in the kitchen with me. He is not allowed on my carpet yet!!! I know you get 1,000's of house training questions. I did search archives. I also heard about litter box training....... I'm just confused. Any help is appreciated!! Oh, what about those rainy days? THEN what?????! Jodie |

| I don't have an adult lol. So that won't help. But he was paper trained at the breeders house. Now he won't go on paper. He pees like every 15 min. Is this normal????? |

| Yes , it is normal for puppy to pee often . He is pretty young , If I were you I would wait until he had all his shots to train him to go outside . |

| I got my puppy at 7 weeks and she peed quite often at that age...every 10-15 minutes like yours. Each week she could hold her pee longer and longer. Now she is 12 weeks old and can hold it for several hours. She even sleeps through the night now! I prefer outside training. We travel a lot to visit family and friends and we have company often. I would feel awkward going to someone's house and having my dogs pee or poop in their house (even though it is on a pee pad). You just don't know how people feel about that. Also, I don't want to have company over and have my dog peeing or pooping right in front of them! You know? Our climate is very mild here is Alabama, so it is convenient for us to train outside. I can see how it would be very inconvenient if you lived somewhere where it snowed all the time or rained all the time. |

I would ask your vet about the shots thing. We started housetraining right away and Loki had only had 2 rounds of shots. I think they are OK once they have their second set of shots, especially if you have a yard and your other pets (if you have them) are vaccinated. But ask your vet. Anyway, Loki is completely housetrained. It just took a while (like until he was about 11 months old) Now is it 100% Oh and he got the pooping outside thing down months before he stopped peeing in the house. He has some medical issues though, so that could have contributed to that. Your pup may pick it up sooner, but don't expect perfection until they are much older! But it's never too late to show them where the right spot is!

| Love Rainy Days for Training! I love rainy days and wet dew on the morning grass! Feel some of my success with my two pups has been thanks to these two conditions. The girls run out - get wet tummies and go right away - then dash back inside! On sunny days when they were first learning to go potty outside they would get distracted by a leaf or a butterfly and want to play and forget why we were really outside! Made me crazy to stand there for 20 minutes only to have to bring them back in and put them into their crates and repeat the process 10 minutes later! Rain and wet grass help make things more time efficient! |

| Thank you for your stories! :-) I'm sooo happy to have found this post, because I thought my little Tika was the only one pee'ing so frequently! When she would pee on her pee pad, I would think she'd be done for awhile...then 5 or 10 minutes later (when I have her on the blanket, couch, pillow, or my lap) - she goes again. It was frustrating washing these things frequently or scrubbing the carpet. We have a playpen set up for her and she does very well on the pee pads when in her playpen. Getting her to use the ones around the house is a different story I'm glad to hear other puppy potty stories because I thought I was the only one going through this -Maria

| Pee Pad vs. Outside When I brought Jasmine home at 11 weeks, I started her outside. It would take at least 20 to 30 minutes before she would actually do anything. She sometimes would pee and then another 15 minutes she would poo. Other times she would pee and it would be 30 minutes. I finally got tired of waiting and took her inside only to find some poo on the carpet. It was really frustrating. I started using the pee pads and I would put her on it and tell her to go pee pee and finally she would. When she did I praised her and gave her a treat. She even poos on the pee pad and runs into the kitchen for her treat. She has associated the potty training with a treat. Will do the same thing when I start training her outside. She still has sometimes when she goes on the carpet. It is a long process!!!!! It has really gotten hot outside so that was my main reason for the pee pad. I eventually want her to go outside but I will have to take the pee pad outside for her to get the idea. She will be 18 weeks on Tuesday. She is a smart little girl but it will still take some time and a lot of patience. Good luck on training your little one. Marhat and Jasmine (my precious little girl) |

| Elle is 4 months old now, and she has improved so much from the 1st day I brought her home. She still has accidents but you need to get ur pup on a routine. This will help greatly. I take way her water around 8:00pm.. and put her to bed around 10:00. She has just been starting to hold it all night in the last 2 weeks. The thing that helped me was giving her treats whenever she would potty outside. She relieves herself and then runs to me for her treat. It is so dang cute! I personally like going outside rather than pee pads. We travel alot on the weekends and going outside in the grass is alot better than trying to make room for a pee pad in out camper. Hope some of this helps.

| Treats What a great idea! I will definitely try using treats after she does her business. What kind of treats do people use (I'm taking a poll)? (BTW, Tika is 12 wks old). Is it okay to take her water away in the evenings? I was instructed to have plenty of water available to her (I guess to prevent hypoglycema).

| puppy pad or outside I trained my 4# yorkie on paper/pads. She's too small to go out with my larger dogs because I have a lot of hawks in my area and I've seen them dive 15 feet from me for a chipmunk! Plus the less she's outside the less worry with fleas and allergies. However, she will go outside when I take her. But I've found that their little bladders are so small she won't last over a couple of hours without peeing and the papers safer! Good luck, Tammie |

| Outside vs. Potty pads Otis, my 2 yr old yorkie and Oliver, 1 yr old shih-poo use both potty pads and go outside. I work 8-10 hours/day so my 3rd bedroom is their potty pad room. Even though my boys are both neutered they still "hike" their leg. I have filled 2 liter bottles with water and secure a pad around them with a rubber band. This gives them a 'hiking post' of sorts. They still have the occasional accident around the house. I've heard this is probably them marking and that it should become less frequent as the dogs get older. Overall, I've been pleased with the potty pad thing. Instead of buying potty pads from the store ($$$) I order chux/underpads from medical supply place. You can buy in bulk and its much cheaper. I think the answer to this question is based on your lifestyle, single/married, stay at home/work, travel a lot/homebody, and climate. It gets cold in Indiana!! |

| Litter box????? I have a 10-week-old named Zachary. I have decided to train him to a litter box and so have a dog litter box and dog litter. Zach goes pee and poop in the litter box although he does have accidents, but that's usually because I wandered off to tend to something else and didn't catch him getting ready to assume the position. He's also way too young to expect him to not have accidents. I decided not to use potty pads because they feel too much like carpeting, blankets and such..... When I have to leave I crate Zach and he does beautifully in the crate although if I'm gone too long he will have an accident, so I try to limit my time away to only a couple of hours. If he hasn't pooped in a while, I'll try to make him poop before I leave by putting him in the litter box and wiping his hiney with a warm, wet paper towel. Most of the time I can get him to poop on my schedule. When he's not playing with me on the floor, he plays in a rubbermaid-like tub that has toys in it. He does pretty well in the playpen but will have accidents if I'm not paying attention. I work part-time and get to take him to work (something I know not very many people can do) and have another playpen and litter box in my office. The litter box is actually pretty convenient especially since I'm not fond of having to go outside in the middle of the night. Until I have him completely trained to the box, I won't let him go outside unless we're out walking which we won't be doing until he's had all of his shots. So, in a nutshell, I keep a really close eye on Zach and use the litter box exclusively for pottying. He does very well with the box and I'm really pleased so far with the results. The box doesn't smell and I clean up the poop as soon as he goes (I have plastic bags right next to the box). |
