Training-when to start? My yorkie is 8 weeks old. I am planning on training classes and working on training at home. I don't want to make the mistakes I made with my last dog. I want a well behaved (as much as possible!) Yorkie! I am trying to start saying a few things to him now, such as Up! when I pick him up, good positive words when he goes pee or potty. I realize he is probably too young for much of anything else. I want to take him to classes also. I have read a few books on the subject, but they don't really give a starting age. What do you all recommend? By the way, the crate training at night seems to be working great! I am finally getting some sleep! Pat

I am going to start puppy training classes too. My vet said I should wait until Kona has all of her shots. I don't want to take a risk of her picking anything up while we are there.

My puppy class won't take students until they have had their 16 week shots. It's just too risky to expose them before then. You can start training at home before then.

I think you can start training your puppy yourself immediately. I'm sure a mother dog is right on top of them teaching them what they can and can't do right from the day they start walking around. I got my pup at 8 weeks and certainly encouraged his being friendly and playful - and discouraged anything he did that might not have been safe or may have caused damage. I know these little pups should have their shots before they leave home to do things....... But - pets are like children....if they aren't taught to behave well at home - we can't expect them to behave when we go out and around to other places. Good luck! Carol Jean

| Start straight away! It doesn't do them any harm AT ALL! (And you feel REALLY good when you bowl along to puppy classes your pup will be the star of the class!) I really REALLY recommend clicker training, and clicking from the start! Here's a link to a really useful resource http://www.clickertraining.com.
