Cowbells, Yorkies, and Poo! Ok, so I am training AprilLove to go potty outside now in addition to the indoor litterbox. (She hasn't had an accident for 5 weeks). I put a cowbell on the door so she can tell me when she needs to go (when I am home of course). My other dogs already have their signals--stand by the door and give me "the look". Anyway, after teaching her ONE time to ring the bell, she caught on. Now how do I get her to know it is for potty and not to go count the blades of grass in the yard???? lol She has me jumping up about every 20 minutes because she is ringing the bell so much. I am proud of her for catching on to that so fast, but I feel like a slave!!! hehe I have been going out with her and giving the potty command and waiting about 5 minutes and if she doesn't go, we come back in. She is just gettting used to going outside and still a little unsure of it. But she will go on command when we just go out when I decide to take her out and not when she rings the bell. So how do I help her make the distinction between going out to play and going out to potty? any hints?? She is such a little cute stinker, I laugh at myself everytime I realize she has me right where she wants me!!! MaryKay AprilLoves' Mommy and slave p.s. she also goes and rings the bell when she sees the other dogs by the door wanting to come in! so I will let them in, then she gives them big kisses like, hey" I got her to open the door for u! she is so smart

That is the cutest thing I've heard!! Your baby is so smart!! My Lilly is paper trained but I would sure love to know how you litter trained your AprilLove! What type of litter do you use? Do you use a dome type litter box? I also have 2 cats, and I have to always watch Lilly because she tries to sneak into there bathroom! I wish I had tips for you and your Bell ringing. Maybe letting about an hour go by and then letting her go out,so she can go potty, she will understand that not every minute she rings the bell it's "playtime"..... Good Luck!! ~lizette

She is trained to the litterbox with piddle pads in them. I don't use the litter, tried that and she just played with it and wanted to eat it. MaryKay

There was a thread about this very issue just last week! Basically, if you know that she has just been out to potty, and rings the bell again, just ignore her. She will soon learn that you are not going to open the door every time she sings the bell. If she REALLY needs to go, she will persist in ringing the bell. Sooner or later, she will only ring the bell when she needs to go. Hope this helps, and good luck.
