Housebreaking Issues.... Hi, Ok, where to begin..me and my boyfriend have a 6 month old yorkie named Molly. We got her from a local breeder when she was about 8 weeks old. The breeder trained her very well on puppy pads and when we got her home it took her a couple days but she was great at using them and not having accidents. After she had been trained on the puppy pads for quite some time, we started taking her outside a lot to use the bathroom. Every time we take her out she goes to the bathroom. Sometimes she pees and poops twice in one walk. Anyways, we trained her to walk without a leash and she is good at that too. But here is the problem, even though we take her out a lot she still goes in the house....ALL THE TIME...! I live with my boyfriends grandma and great grandma also, who are HUGE packrats. So of course Molly, the yorkie, finds hidden places and goes there! Sometimes I can't find the mess for days so it is very frustrating. There are boxes and things piled everywhere in this house it is almost unlivable. Does anyone know why she goes in hidden places and how I can rid her of this very inconvenient problem? It is driving me crazy. She gets praised when she goes outside and yelled at when I catch her going inside.....I have just run out of ideas here......If anyone has any advice please let me know! Much thanks in advance..... Stressed out yorkie owners, Cindy and Casey

Our yorkie was pee pad trained when we got him as well so the breeder said. Ha! He would go into hiding to do his buisness. He was doing great with going outside but who has the time and the weather was an issue to. We started using the doggie litter box. It has been a breeze. No more outside trips however you have to clean it daily or they will not use it.. I bought the expensive dog litter from pet smart, but switched to reg. cheap cat litter, and no problems. Good luck

Doggie Litter Box? Who woulda known! lol You can train dogs to use the litter box? wow...lol I forgot to mention we have cats too so maybe this would be a good idea. Another problem though....Molly likes to eat cat litter clumps and she drags it out of the litter box and on to the floor.... would we have to get a special litter box just for dogs? But if we did that wouldn't the cats use it too?

I dont have a cat but you could try the dog litter which is made from recycled paper the look like the size of a finder. Iko chew on the litter for 2-3 days then quit. I prefer the cat litter. It is cheaper. My only suggestion is to get the self cleaning litter box and you would not have this problem (they all could use it) They have them at walmart but I do not know the price. sorry I could not be of more help. good luck, melanie

Hi, Thanks for the advice I will try training Molly to use the litter box. Guess it couldnt hurt! I would get the self cleaning litterbox but they are outrageously expensive. I'll get one someday but I will have to buy a few of them seeing that I have 5 cats lol Thanks again for the advice, -Cindy and Casey

Mia used to show a lot of interest in our cat's litter box too, so we got a covered litter box for our cat and placed it in our small bathroom where Mia doesn't go.

Welcome to YT. I put my pee pads in one of those shallow, under the bed totes, and my guys use that. However this still might not stop her sneaking off to other places. You praise her for going in the right places, but since you have never caught her going in the wrong places, you have not scolded her for doing that, so she doesn't know that it's wrong. I don't allow mine the full run of the house, they are confined to the kitchen unless I am able to give them my undivided attention. That way if I catch them starting to go where they aren't supposed to, I can scold them and take then to the right place. I will not allow them full run of the house until they consistently go to the door or the pee pad. As for the dog eating cat poop, we had a dog in the past that did that so I put in a cat door to the utility room, and put the litter box in there. You could also put a gate across a doorway to where the litter box is, the cat can jump over it. These little guys sure keep us on our toes. LOL

Thanks for advice Your advice has been extremely helpful! Does anyone know if the newspaper like litter is inexpensive? I am going to see if we can go get a gate later...! What a brilliant idea! lol! That will resolve the dog eating the litter problem! Wonderful!
