confused on crate training my question is, do I put my new pup in the crate at night when I have'nt gotten her trained to go into her crate yet. I know I am suposed to train her to want to go into her crate, never force her. throw treats into crate and fav. tys into crate, encourage her to explore crate. then when shes used to going in and out of crate, close door for a minute, and increase time slowly as days pass, until she is happy to go in crate. But Ive also read that I should put pup in crate at night in my room, and take her potty a couple of times during night at first. Anyway, Im confused by hearing these two different ways. If I wait till shes kennel trained before i get her to sleep in crate at night, then where does she sleep in the mean time. please help

I crate trained Emmy from day one. I got her at 8 weeks and at night time would put her in the crate to sleep. I would take her out about 10-11ish and she would be good until 7am. When you first start putting her in it, she will whine and cry for a bit, but within a few days she should get used to it. It didn't take Emmy long either to know when she was tired to walk freely in and out of her crate. She's almost 8 months and she sleeps with me now, but during the day I will still find her sleeping in her crate. So if you're asking if it is a bad thing by putting her in the crate yourself, I would say no. Crate training worked great for me. Hope this helps! -Ashley & Emmy

First of all, how was your puppy's sleeping arrangements prior to him coming home. Whatever that was, it should continue at least for a week until your puppy gets settled. Then gradually adjust whatever sleeping arrangements you would like him to have. My babies pretty much sleeps with me in bed. I just got my second one, Annika, not too long ago at 12 weeks. During the day, both of my babies are in the laundry room. Annika is in an expen and Tiger is outside the pen. Tiger is good on the pee pad and is crate trained to hold his pee up to 7 hours (if he wants to). Both of them have their crates without the door so they can come in and out of it freely. However, they both love to stay inside (no need for force or treats) when I am gone or busy with other things. I highly suggest you get an expen big enough where he has his crate on one corner, his water in another corner and the pad in another corner. Now if you want to get him to control his bladder, crate training him during the day is what you need to do. Meaning, that he is inside his crate and will only be realeased to relieve himself. Start gradually and slowly increase the time. I used increments of 30 minutes and adjusts it every week. So that is how Tiger got his training. He was excellent at not peeing in bed (never an accident) but during the day, he is not consistent. Annika is different as she is always consistent on going in the pad from day one so I did not feel a need to crate train her. In fact, I have pads now in my kitchen and my husbands den and she is good in going there . . no accidents Good luck on your house training . . .

We've always let our yorkies sleep in bed with us at night. Until they are potty trained, they stay in a crate during the day when we are not at home to keep a close eye on them. Since we only put them in their crate while we were gone, we don't hear them cry trying to get out. I just know it would break my heart to hear that Hobbs is completely potty trained now, so he never HAS to go in his crate (we leave him free to roam the house during the day), but we often find him curled up in his crate asleep. We just got a new puppy yesterday, and she was used to staying in a cage/crate type setup at the breeder, so we got her the same type of wire crate and she stays in there when we aren't home. But, she does sleep in bed with us at night. That way, I will know if she wakes up and has to go to the bathroom. We are training her to go potty outside, so this solution is best for us. I agree with one of the previous posts...if she is not used to being in a crate, I would not stress her out the first week by forcing her to go in a crate. It could bring on a hypoglocemic attack if she is too stressed out. I would use the first week to get her aquainted with the crate and let her sleep in an x-pen or whatever type of setup she used at the breeders. At night, you can leave the crate open in the x-pen and she can get used to sleeping in there with the door open before you close her in there.

We just brought home our 2nd yorkie on Sunday, and she has been sleeping in the bed with us since day 1. She is not potty trained, so I make her sleep on a towel right next to me. I am a very light sleeper, so if she wakes up in the middle of the night, I immediately take her out to use the bathroom. So far she hasn't had any accidents in our bed, but we're still keeping our fingers crossed! | |
